INTRODUCTION
When I first read the Holy Qur’an in Turkish I asked myself the following question. What did I see in the Qur’an? The first answer I discovered, was that there was GOOD NEWS in it. When I again asked the same question, this time the answer was MAN. Then I understood that The Qur’an was the good news descended from the source as a mercy to the whole creation. I also discovered, when I read the Qur’an in Turkish, that the people, who were given the scriptures, known as the Jews and Christians, about whom the Muslim World had preformed ideas , which I believet did not reflect the true message of The Qur’an. However, the thoughts in both the Jewish and Christian societies with regard to the followers of the Qur’an, in general have also been adversive . The Jewish people who follow the teachings of Moses, recognize perhaps only the Old Testament which is formed by the Torah, the five books of Moses, and other books proclaimed by the Jewish prophets who came after Moses. The Christians who follow Jesus however, recognize both The Old Testament and The New Testament which includes the four gospels accepted by The Church and the texts written by some of the followers of Jesus after his death.
Those books, which are known as The Old Testament, The New Testament and The Qur’an all appeared in the same geographical area and are probably only three of the books of religious teaching given to mankind. The sequence of the books mentioned above also shows the chronological order. After reading those three books, I understood that the same message was given to us all. This sameness of the message is underlined in the following chapters by referring to verses taken from those three books. It appears that religious teaching began with Adam, who is known as the forefather of the human race. According to the Holy Books one also feels that the communıty which had had the opportunity to benefit from the Holy Message, after a while, came off the path advised by The Creator. This was probably due to human weakness and therefore a new Messenger was sent. What appears to have happened was that every new Messenger, reminded the people of what was given before . Who knows, whether or not the very essence of this constant reminder may have been to direct us towards discovering our trueselves.
The information presented in the following chapters is not scientific . It is a text to remind those interested in some of the issues that the author, within his human capacity, became aware of while reading those three Holy Books The whole text is arranged in different chapters under different headings with the aim of making it easy to read. In actual fact, the work presented is a Whole. This is because it is possible to say that the subject of this study, Religion, is a Whole, and cannot be divided. The thoughts put forward in the text may change in time, depending on the personal awareness of the author. We should bear in mind that absolute knowledge cannot be attained by the children of Adam who have been living in a material universe where the faculties of human beings are limited.
In the following first two chapters, based on the similarities of the verses taken from The Old Testament, The New Testament and The Qur’an, it is argued that the message of these three books is essentially the same, and that there is continuity of the teaching. The rest of the text endeavours to show some of the aspects of this religious teaching. With this aim, various verses are borrowed from the three books without any favoritism between them.. My personal view, is that there is no difference between these books. The only difference appears to be the different names of the Messengers. As the verses sometimes express more than one idea, those verses have been referred to more than once in different parts of the text.
In the following chapters it is argued that, because the three books are the same in essence, they cannot be the books of three different religions. According to practice, almost every one automatically becomes a follower of the book which is accepted in one’s surroundings, and which is accepted to be the book of that community. This I feel, creates walls between different societies and causes mental boundaries in people’s minds. Why does not the world attempt to encourage people to choose and follow the book or books which they desire.
This present text is aimed at reminding everyone that in reality, the human race is just one big family. Towards this end, even if only an infinitesimal step is taken due to this text, its aim will be assumed to have been accomplished.
CREATION (GENESIS)
The subject of the creation is mentioned in The Old Testament (O.T.) in The Genesis section. The texts available on the subject in different versions of the Old Testament are in essence similar. Creation is also mentioned in The Qur’an but is dispersed in various verses of the different chapters(suras). In The Qur’an, the same method prevails to other issues too. Let us now remind ourselves of some of the verses which relate to the creation, from The Old Testament:
(O.T. Creation) 1-1,2 In the beginning, when God created the universe, the earth was formless and desolate. The raging ocean that covered everything was covered in total darkness, and the power of God was moving over the water.
(O.T. Creation) 1-3,4,5 Then God commanded, “Let there be light,” and light appared…Then He separated the light fromthe darkness, and He named the the light “Day” and the darkness “Night”. Evening passed and morning came, that was the first day.
(O.T. Creation) 1-6,7,8,9,10 Then God commanded, “Let there be a dome to divide the water…”_ and it was done… He named the dome, “Sky”… that was the second day.
Then God commanded, “Let the water below the sky come together in one place, so that the land will appear,” and it was done.He named the land “Earth”, and the water which had come together He named “Sea”.
The creation of different species of plants as a result of God’s command is given in verse (1-11). The beginning of the illumination of the earth, and the concept of time, are narrated in The Old Testament in the following verses,
(O.T. Creation) 1-16,17 So God made the two larger lights, the sun to rule over the day and the moon to rule over the night; He also made the stars. He placed lights in the sky to shine on the earth.
The Old Testament then proceeds with the creation of different organisms in the seas and on the land on earth; verses (1-21,24) of the Creation chapter of the Old Testament, and lastly the creation of man is given in the verses (1-26,28). The creation on the other hand is more detailed in the second part of the same chapter. Now let us remember some of the verses which talks about the creation in The Qur’an,
(Qur’an) 6-1 Praise be to God, Who created Heaven and Earth and granted darkness and light!
(Qur’an) 41-11,12 Then He soared up to Heaven while it was still a haze, and told both it and the earth: "Come, either obediently or reluctantly." They both said: "We shall come willingly!"
He determined His will of them as seven heavens [constructed] within two days, and inspired its own order in each heaven. We have beautified the lowest heaven with lamps and a safeguard. Such is the decree of the Powerful, the Aware!
(Qur’an) 21-30 Have not those who disbelieve seen how Heaven and Earth were once one solid mass which We ripped apart? We have made every living thing out of water. Will they still not believe?
(Qur’an) 21-33 He is the One Who has created night and day, the sun and the moon; each floating along in an orbit
(Qur’an) 51-49 With everything We have created pairs, so that you may reason
Both The Old Testament and The Qur’an talk about the duratıon of the creation in similar terms,
(O.T. Creation) 2-1,2,3 And so the whole universe was completed. By the seventh day God finished what He had been doing and rested. He blessed the seventh day and set it apart as a special day,…
(Qur’an) 11-7 He is the One Who created Heaven and Earth in six days.
(Qur’an) 50-38 We created the Heavens and the Earth and whatever lies in between them in six days, no weariness ever affects Us.
Reading the verses above, even though one may notice some differences between the verses of The Old Testament and Qur’an with regard to the way it is expressed, it may be possible to find a parallelism on the creation of the universe and more so on the creation of the earth. One may also find the knowledge given in some of the Qur’an verses rather interesting. Let us look at the verses given above again,
(Qur’an) 41-12 ... We have beautified the lowest heaven with lamps and a safeguard (protective shield).
(Qur’an) 21-33 …and the sun and the moon; each floating along in an orbit
One wonders if that shield placed to protect the earth means the ozon layer (which the human race has been damaging) or the electromagnetic belt around the globe? The other verse which points out to the presence of the orbits of the earth and the moon seems incredible if one remembers that the The Qur’an was sent to the human race during the first half of the seventh century.
Both The Old Testament and The Qur’an express that the creation is completed in six days. The term “Day” used in both sources, I do not think has any relation to a twenty four hour time span with the earth time. Actually, some verses of The Old Testament and The Qur’an give some light on the meaning of that term “Day”,
(O.T. Psalms) 90-14 O Lord, you have always been our home.
A thousand years to You are like one day;
(Qur’an) 32-5 … He organizes the matter from Heaven [down] to Earth; then it will soar back up to Him on a day whose measure is a thousand years according to the way you count
(Qur’an) 70-4 The angels and the Holy Spirit ascend to Him in a Day the measure whereof is fifty thousand years,
Considering the last three verses, the term “Day” probably denotes a time span of varying length with the time concept on earth. The creation of man is mentioned and expressed again in a unique way both in The Old Testament and in The Qur’an following the creation of the material universe.
(O.T. Creation) 2-7 Then the Lord God took some soil from the ground and formed a man out of it; He breathed life giving breath into his nostrils and the man began to live.
It appears that the first man on earth, who was named as Adam in later verses, was created from the soil of thr earth earth. After taking a note of this, let us remember some verses from The Old Testament (O.T.). Planting a garden in a place called Eden, which is said to be in the east, and the placing of Adam there is given in verse (2-8) while God bringinging every creature to Adam and all of them being given a name by Adam is given in verse (2-19) of the Creation chapter o the Old Testament. The creation of a wife for Adam are given in the following verses,
(O.T. Creation) 2-21,22 …While he slept, He took out one of the man’s ribs …
He (The Lord God ) formed a woman out of the rib and brought her to him.
Because the female was created from the bone and the flesh of man, he called her the woman and the result of the way she was formed is expressed in the following verse,
(O.T Creation) 2-24 That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united with his wife, and they become one.
Now let us look at the verses of The Qur’an which show how the creation of man was expressed,
(Qur’an) 38-71,72 Remember once your Lord told the angels: "I am going to create a man out of clay. When I have fashioned him and breathed from My spirit into him, drop down on your knees before him."
(Qur’an) 38-73,74 The angels all bowed down on their knees together except for Satan; he was too proud and was one of the disbelievers.
(Qur’an) 7-189 He is the One Who has created you (all) from a single soul, and made its mate from it, so he may settle down with her.
Looking at the verses on the creation of Adam and his wife in The Old Testament and in The Qur’an, it seems that both sources share quıte similar expressions. Although the verses in The Qur’an are quite concise, some of the knowledge given seems rather interesting. God’s desire for the angels to prostrate to Adam after God breathed from His soul into him requires one to think deeply since God requires mankind to prostrate only to Himself. The behaviour of Satan in this affair which is not mentioned in The Old Testament, seems rather interesting. According to The Old Testament (2-19), Adam named every creature. On this subject The Qur’an uses a different approach,
(Qur’an) 2-31,32,33 He taught Adam all the names of everything; then presented them to the angels, and said: "Tell me the names of these…"
.
They said: "Glory be to You; we have no knowledge except whatever You have taught us.!"
He said: "O Adam! Inform them of their names," …
It is obvious that Adam had learned of everything with the will of the Creator. Regarding the birth of mankind, no knowledge exists in The Old Testament, but the same issue is touched on in The Qur’an and as usual is dispersed, in several verses,
(Qur’an) 22-5 …0 men, if you have ever been in doubt about rising again, well We created you from dust; then from a sperm; then from a clot; then from a lump of tissue either shaped or shapeless, so We might explain [things] to you.
(Qur’an) 76-2 Verily, We have created man from drops of semen, we transform him from one state into another, in the end We made him hearer and seer.
(Qur’an) 32-7,8 … He began by creating man from clay; then He made his offspring from an extract of discarded liquid;
40-67 "He is the One Who created you from dust, then from a drop of semen, then from a clot.
The verses of The Qur’an given above point out that in the creation the starting stage was the creation of Adam from the dust of the earth while the generations which followed were created by insemination. Nevertheless, these verses and the others related to the same subject do not explain the physical differences of the people on earth, but some other verses from The Qur’an make an oblique mention of this issue,
(Qur’an) 30-22 Among His signs are the creation of Heaven and Earth, as well as the diversity in your tongues and colors. In that are signs for those who have knowledge.
(Qur’an) 49-13 0 mankind, We have created you from a male and female, and set you up as nations and tribes so you may recognize one another with the aid of your customs.
Other beings, like angels and demons, besides the human race, although mentioned in The Old Testament and The New Testament in different verses no knowledge is given concerning their creation. The Qur’an mentions their creation too in different verses,
(Qur’an) 55-14,15 He created man from ringing clay just like the fired clay,
while He created sprites from a smokeless fire.
(Qur’an) 18-50,51 Remember when We told the angels: "Bow down on your knees before Adam," they all knelt down except for Satan; he was a sprite and acted against his Lord's command. Will you adopt him and his offspring as patrons instead of Myself? They are enemies of yours!
… I did not make them as witnesses to the creation of Heaven and Earth, nor even at their own creation…
(Qur’an) 15-27 and the sprites We had created earlier from smokeless fire.
(Qur’an) 6-100 People have set up sprites as associates with God, even though they were created by Him! People have even dared to impute sons and daughters to Him without having any knowledge
(Qur’an) 43-19 They even pretend the angels who are the Mercy-giving's servants are females! Were the people present at their creation? …
(Qur’an) 35-1 All the Praise be to God, Originator of Heavens and Earth, Who appoints the Angels as messengers messengers with wings in pairs, and in threes and fours.
It seems that the sprites existed before the creation of Adam and they were probably created from a form of energy of which we are not yet aware. The Qur’an also gives us some clues to the existence of some other intelligent beings in addition to mankind in the universe,
(Qur’an) 30-20 Among His signs is that he created you from dust; then you have become a human species and you have been spreading all around the globe.
(Qur’an) 17-70 And indeed We have honoured the Children of Adam, and have made them superior to many of those whom We have created.
(Qur’an) 4-132 And to God belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is on earth. And God is Ever All- Sufficient as a Disposer of affairs.
(Qur’an) 3-83 Do they crave something other than God's religion? Yet the conscious ones in the Heavens and those on Earth have been submitted to Him, willingly or unwillingly ; to Him only, will they be returned.
In Turkish society it was expressed frequently by the scholars of religion that the human race is the most superior being created. However the verses of The Qur’an given above say we are a human species. If The Qur’an verses are telling the truth, and I cannot think otherwise, then one may be inclined to think that some other human species did exist or may still exist. Furthermore, the verses also say that the human race is superior to many of those created. This makes us to think that there are beings superior to mankind. Furthermore, according to the above verses, the human beings then are the ones on earth who are the those with conscience in the heavens? If we are the ones on earth who are those with conscience in the heavens?
In the verse (6-100) of The Qur’an, the creation of sprites was mentioned but they cannot be seen by the human eye. The Qur’an also gives a clue concerning other beings on earth,
(Qur’an) 27- 82 Whenever the Sentence prevails against them, We shall bring forth a being (dabbe) from the earth for them who will tell them that mankind has not been convinced by Our signs.
It appears that there may be other life forms, of which we are not aware, either sharing the earth with us or outside our globe. One must remember that humans perceive things with their five senses. For instance to talk to people who lived centuries ago, before the discovery of the microscope, on microorganisms would have been meaningless. Furthermore, we have to remember that our biology allows us to percieve a three dimensional material universe. Therefore, whatever we cannot perceive does not exist to us. I wonder if what we perceive reflects the whole truth? Would it be possible that our material universe is only a part of a four or five or a multidimensional universe, and in that some other life forms exists. Perhaps in time mankind may learn the answers.
When one looks at the creation that we are aware of, concrete or abstract, it is possible to notice the duality. The first verses of The Old Testament mention the light and the darkness. Do not we all see the same duality in everything? This same duality is observed in human behaviour too. On which thinking of this subject let us remember a verse from The Qur’an,
(Qur’an) 91-7,8 The flesh is perfected by Him.
Then He inspired in him hypocrisy and his piety.
It may be possible now, to say that the hypocritical, as well as the pious behaviour of human beings, is only possible with the inspiration and will of The Creator, as is the case of every thing. In such a situation, then one should accept the decree assigned to us, and try to understand the truth with regard to the good news given in the holy books.
As it was said in the Qur’an verse (18-51) that neither Satan nor his offsiprings were made witnesses to the creation. If one asks, was there anyone who witnessed the creation? The Qur’an seems to have some clues concerning this. Remember the verse from The Qur’an, when Abraham was talking to his people with these words,
(Qur’an) 21-56 He said “rather your Lord is the Lord of Heavens and Earth, and the One Who originated them, while I am one of the witnesses for that.”
As far as we know, one can be a witness only to what one sees. It also appears that Abraham was only one of those who was a witness to the creation of the Earth and the Heavens. In relation to this, let us remember some other verses of The Qur’an,
(Qur’an) 53-12,18 Yet will you (all) distrust him about what he saw?
He certainly did see some of his Lord's greatest signs!
(Qur’an) 48-8 Verily,We have sent you as a witness, herald and warner.
The verses (53-12,18) seems to be related to the ascension of Muhammad while he was still in the flesh. Durıng that journey, what he saw we do not know.
The issue of the creation in the gospel of John is approached somehow differently than that given in The Old Testament and in The Qur’an. The first verses of John’s gospel says that at the beginning there was Logos which was with God, and everything was created through Logos. In the following verses it is stated that Logos became a human as Jesus and lived amongst the people. The followers of Jesus believe that Jesus was the Son of God. In the gospels accepted by the church it is not possible to see any verse belonging to Jesus himself saying that he was the son of God. Instead he always said that he was the Son of Man. This belief among the followers of Jesus appears to have created some controversy in some parts of the world. The Qur’an approaches this issue quite differently,
(Qur’an) 3-59,60 Verily, the case of Jesus with God was the same as Adam's: He created him from dust; then told him: 'Be!" and he was.
That is theTruth from your Lord, so do not be a waverer.
In the gospels, although limited, some knowledge can be found concerning the identity of Jesus,
(John’s Gospel) 8-23 Jesus answered,” You belong to this world here below, but I come from above. You are from this world, but I am not from this world.
This verse from the Gospel seems to put some light on the uniqueness of the birth of Jesus, (a virgin giving birth to Jesus in flesh), even if not very clear. If we remember the verses on creation from the first book of The Old Testament, every step of the creation was accomplished simply by the desire of God Allmighty and Him saying “Be”. If we accept that the power of God All mighty is sufficient to carry out everything, then such an uniqueness in the birth of Jesus can be understood. Certainly we must be aware of the fact that the term uniqueness is the result of the limitations of the capabilities of the human race. It is also possible to remember another but similar birth from The Old Testament. When Isaac was born to Abraham, he was more than a hundred years old and his wife Sara had already passed the age of conceiving a child. Nevertheless Isaac was born, because it was the decree of God.
After reciting some verses from The Old Testament, from The New Testament and The Qur’an, in relation to different aspects of the creation, it may be necessary to include another question, which I think may be a common one to most people, i.e. what was the reason for the creation? We can find a likely answer in The Qur’an,
(Qur’an) 51-56 I have created sprites and men so they may worship only Me;
44-38,39 We did not create Heaven and Earth and anything in between them just for our amusement.
We have created them only to reveal the Truth, even though most of them do not realize it.
In addition to that, the aim of the creation of the earth is given in another verse of The Qur’an,
77-25,26 Have We not made the earth as a round up for the living and the dead ?
On the whole, probably with some small differences, the verses of both The Old Testament and The Qur’an seem to be talking about the same past, probably with some small differences. This certainly fulfills one of the the duties of The Qur’an, namely the confirmation of the previous messages. This confirmational aspect of The Qur’an will be further underlined in the following chapters. While closing this chapter it may be interesting to recite some more verses of The Qur’an as thought provoking,
(Qur’an) 30-8 Have they not even thought about their ownselves? God has only created Heaven and Earth and whatever lies in between them for the Truth and until a specific deadline. Yet many men disbelieve about meeting their Lord.
(Qur’an) 30-11 God begins with creation, then He performs it all over again; finally to Him you will be returned.
(Qur’an) 10-4 To Him will you all return. This is a divine promise; He begins with creation then performs it all over again so that He may reward those who believe and perform honorable deeds.
RELIGION
The term ‘religion’ in Arabic is ‘din’, which according to Adıvar, goes back to the Aramaic and Hebrew languages. In Arabic it means decree, as well as it expressing devotion to God. Öztürk also quotes the meaning of the same term according to some of the scholars of religion (Kur’an’ın Temel Kavramları).
If one considers human history, as much as we know of, and the verses of The Qur’an related to the aim of the creation, then we may be justified in saying that religion is a method of teaching arranged by the Creator. The principles of the teaching is given in the holy books and the books were proclaimed to the public by the messengers, whose deeds were also another way of teaching the principles given. The messengers we may say, are the teachers of the message, and it appears that they were the ones selected by God.. The creater of religion is God and therefore religion itself belongs to God. This truth is expressed rather strongly in the following verses of the Qur’an.
(Qur’an) 39-3 Certainly pure and clear religion belongs to God alone! …
(Qur’an) 40-65 He is the Ever Living; there is no deity except Him, so appeal to Him,allotting religion to Him. …
(Qur’an) 30-30 As a true believer, O Muhammad, turn your face towards the religion which God has created for mankind.
The pure and genuine religion is expressed in The New testament (N.T.) with the following words:
(N.T. James’ Letter) 1-27 What God the Father considers to be pure and genuine religion is this: to take care of orphans and widows in their suffering and to keep oneself from being corrupted by the world.
The word Religion is almost always used in the singular form in the Qur’an with the exception of some verses given below,
(Qur’an) 48-28 He is the One Who has sent His messenger with guidance and the True Religion so He may have it prevail over all religions. God is the All-Sufficient as a Witness!
(Qur’an) 9-33 He is the One Who has sent His messenger with guidance and the True Religion so He may cause it to prevail over all religions, no matter how disbelievers may hate it.
In these verses I think the word religion is used in the plural form to point out the man-made belief systems, I do not think that pluralism has anything to do with Judaism and Christianity, both of which have been named by mankind and accepted as different religions by the human race. The term ‘disbelievers’ used in the above verse certainly does not point to the followers of the Old Testament and the New Testament.
The subject of this study is mainly The Old Testament, The New Testament and The Qur’an which, in general terms, names the followers of the first two books as the “ People of the Scripture.” According to The Qur’an, the book known as The Psalms in The Old Testament is called Zebur and it is the one which was given to prophet David. It may be interesting to note the fact that, we do not know how accurate the translations from the old scriptures are, we know that in The Old Testament, The Creator is called as The Lord God who gave Moses, The Law.
Looking at the texts of the teachings of Jesus, the Gospels, accepted by the church hierarchy a long time ago, there was no mention of the word Christian. We must remember that according to The New Testament the word ‘Christian’ was first used at Antioch (Antakya in Turkey) for the followers of the teachings of Jesus.
(N.T. Acts) 11-27 …It was at Antioch that the believers were first called Christians.
The Qur’an, in some verses(Qur’an 5-47), calls the members of the church all over the world as The Followers of the Gospel (Injeel). This terminology actually prevents the creation of any division between the followers of the different books. Within this approach, I personally prefer to call the people who worship in the synagogues as The Followers of The Old Testament and the people who worship in the mosques as The Followers of The Qur’an. As we all know, it is interesting that the followers of any of the books, while accepting the previous book, with the exception of a minority tend to reject the book which came after. Nowadays, we are all aware of a development known as “dialogue between the different religions.” Actually, it is a dialogue arranged between the members of the religious hierarchy of the followers of those three books. It is difficult to understand why people still use the term religion in the plural form. To my knowledge, these dialogues have been fruitless. I personally do not expect any positive outcome from those meetings unless the members of the clergy who partipitate in those meetings overcome their personal prejudices towards people who follow a book different in name than the book which themselves follow. I wonder if the same prejudice which exists in the minds of the majority of the people who follow one of those three books, has been put in their minds by the members of the clergy. I am sure everyone will be able to find out the answer, by simply looking at the way they have been taught the so called ‘teachings of religion’, which quıte often has no relation to the source book, i.e. the book that the person is supposed to follow. Although the teachings in the source books are ‘Universal’, because of the way they were taught, have been designed by man and that is the source of the creation of prejudice between the people who follow different books. The prejudice against people who are followers of different books, has caused many tears for almost a thousand years and still continues, especially in the Middle East, to this day. It appears that the children of Adam have either not been able to understand the universality of God’s teachings, or some of them, preferred diversification in order that they might use this as a source for material gain. Faith is between the man and The Creator, why do the clerical institutions still have power on the running of the daily activities of the individuals and furthermore play a role in running the state policy in some countries even in the Western world, in this century is beyond the grasp of an ordinary believer. On the other hand, this problem of diversification between the peopleof the followers of different books had already been overcome by the people themselves of the followers of all three books in Turkey. As one example, we can mention the cities of Mardin and Antakya(Antioch in times of Jesus). This requıred state of the practices of faith might be due to the fact that the state in Turkey is secular. Probably secularism may be helpful in taking some significant steps to overcome the diversification between the followers of Holy Books.
If we remember the verses mentioned in the previous chapter concerning the Creation, it is clear that both The Old Testament and The Qur’an are giving us the same information. This tells us that the source of the message is the same. If this is the case, could it be possible that the teachings of religion might have changed in time from the essentials? The answer may be found in the following verse of The Qur’an, which clearly expresses the oneness in the teachings of religion,
(Qur’an) 42-13 He has decreed what He has suggested to Noah from religion for you all and what He has inspired in you (Muhammad) and what we have suggested to Abraham, Moses and Jesus saying: "Maintain religion tight and do not stir up any divisions within it."
A similar approach is also noticeable in the New Testament,
(N.T. Ephesians) 4-4,5,6 There is one body and one Spirit, just as there is one hope to which God has called you.
There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism;
there is oneGod and Father of all mankind, who is Lord of all, and is in all.
(N.T. 1 Corinthians) 12-13 In the same way, all of us, whether Jews or Gentiles, whether slaves or free, have been baptized into the one body by the same Spirit, and we have all been given the one Spirit to drink.
When we look at the present day, what we see is unbelievable diversification, not only amongst the followers of different books, but even amongst the followers of the same book. This behaviour of the human beings can simply be called as ‘going against “God’s Law.” The following verses of The Qur’an stresses the fact that the teachings of religion is One and it belongs to The Creator,
(Qur’an) 24-2 … do not let any pity for either party distract you from [complying with] God's religion if you believe in God and the Last Day.
(Qur’an) 3-83 Do they crave something besides God's religion?
(Qur’an) 110-2 and you see mankind entering God's religion in droves;
This unity in religious teaching is also mentioned in The NewTestament in Paul’s letter to the Ephesians,
(N.T. Ephesians) 4-4,5,6 There is one body and one Spirit, just as there is one hope to which God has called you.
There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism;
There is one God and Father of all mankind, who is Lord of all, Works through all, and is in all.
If the faith is one, then the basics of the teachings of religion is also one, and there should be continuity in it right from the very beginning. While the essence of the teaching should be the same, the teaching aids and the rules without doubt show some differences. This is a natural result of the development of the human consciousness. The teaching of the youth is definately different than the teaching of the children. For that reason what seems to be differences, do not violate the universal character of the teachings of religion. Every so often the continuity in the religious teaching is stressed, by The Qur’an, and while doing so, it fulfils one of the duties of The Qur’an - the confirmation of the message proclaimed by the previous messengers,
(Qur’an) 87-18,19 Verily, All this has been written on the earliest scrolls,
the scriptures of Abraham and Moses.
(Qur’an) 57-26,27 Indeed we sent Noah and Abraham as messengers, and granted prophethood and the Book to the offspring of them both. …
Then We made Our messengers follow along in their footsteps and We followed them up with Jesus the son of Mary. We gave him the Gospel and placed compassion and mercy in the hearts of those who have followed him; But monkhood, yet they initiated it: We did not prescribe it for them-accept through (their) aspiring for God's approval.
We have the scriptures of Moses but unfortunately we do not posses the scriptures of Abraham. It is also interesting that throughout the past, the messengers who were given the duty to proclaim God’s message seems, according to the Old Testament and the Qur’an, have the same family tree. This fact is expressed in detail in the Genesis part of The Old Testament.
With regard to the continuity of the teachings of religion, in The Old Testament and in The New Testament one can find verses which confirm the previous message while some others give us information about the next Messenger to come to life and proclaim the message. The Qur’an, on the other hand only confirms God’s message previously given. The continuity of the teachings of Religion is underlined by Jesus in the following verse;
(N.T. Luke’s Gospel) 5-17 “Do not think that I have come to do away with the Law of Moses and the teachings of prophets. I have not come to do away with them, but to make their teachings come true.”
One may remember the following verses from The Old Testament as an example which tell us about the new Messenger to come.
(O.T. Deuteronomy) 18-17,18,19 So the Lord said to me, “They have made a wise request.
I will send them a prophet like you from among their own people; I will tell him what to say, and he will tell the people everything I command.
He will speak in my name,…
(O.T. Isaiah) 7-14 …The Lord himself will give you a sign: a young woman who is pregnant will have a son and will name him ‘Immanuel’.
(O.T. Isaiah) 9-6,7 A child is born to us! A son is given to us! And he will be our ruler…
…He will rule as King David’s successor, basing his power on right and justice, from now until the end of time…
These verses above seem to be pointing to the coming of a new Messenger, Jesus, whose arrival at Jerusalem later in his life, was forseen in the book of Zechariah in the following words,
(O.T. Zechariah) 9-9 …Look your king is coming to you! He comes triumphant and victorious, but humble and riding on a donkey- on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
The way Jesus arrived in Jerusalem given in further details in the gospels that it is simply the confirmation of the verse (9-9) from the book of Zechariah. Looking at the texts of Gospels one can see the signs of another messenger to come after Jesus,
(N.T. John’s Gospel) 15-26 The Helper will come – the Spirit, who reveals the truth about God and who comes from the Father, and he will speak about me.
(N.T. John’s Gospel) 16-13,14 …He will not speak on his own authority, but he will speak of what he hears…
He will give me glory, because he will take what I say and tell it to you.
These verses give clues concerning the coming of a messenger after Jesus. Indeed Muhammad who came after Jesus told people of what he had heard. Jesus says “he will tell him what to say”, Really, what we know is that Angel Gabriel told Muhammad what to say. The prophecy, that the next messenger to come after Jesus, who was going to mention Jesus (N.T. John’s Gospel 16-13,14) was fulfilled to a great extent in The Qur’an, such that Jesus and his mother Virgin Mary, the miracle of the birth of Jesus and the miracles performed by Jesus, are all mentioned especially in the Meryem and Al-i Imran suras(chapters) of The Qur’an,
(Qur’an) 3-42 So the angels said: "O Mary! God has chosen you and purified you. He has exalted you over all the women of the creation.
(Qur’an) 3-45 Thus the angels said: "Mary, God announces good news to you with a word from Himself . His name will be Christ Jesus, the son of Mary, [who is] well regarded in this world and the Hereafter, and one of those drawn near to God.
While telling us the stories of the previous messengers, The Qur’an also tells us about the talks exchanged between people in the past, especially between the messengers and their communities. This is a different approach not seen in other books, and an example is given below,
(Qur’an) 61-6 Remember when Jesus son of Mary said: “Children of Israel, I am God's messenger to you, confirming whatever came before me in the Torah and giving glad tidings about a messenger coming after me whose name will be Ahmad. …
In this verse the unity in the teachings of religion, as well as its continuity is clear. None of the messengers give us any knowledge which contradicts the knowledge given previously. We can see this virtue in different verses of The New Testament and The Qur’an,
(John’s Gospel) 1-17 God gave the Law through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
(Mathew’s Gospel) 8-4 Then Jesus said to him, “Listen! Don’t tell anyone, but go straight to the priest and let him examine you; then in order to prove to everyone that you are cured, offer the sacrifice that Moses ordered.”
The previous verse was about a man, suffering from leprosy, who was healed by Jesus. I do not remember reading either in the Gospels or in The Qur’an about Jesus sacrificing an animal. I think this verse is an outstanding example which shows us that the messengers do not reject the previous teachings. Instead it gives us different facets which were suitable to the human consciousness of that time. Such an approach, I am sure, takes into consideration the state of the awareness of mankind of the time that the message was proclaimed and perhaps, help the awareness of people to be improved. In this context, in addition to the previous verses, one should pay attention to the following verses from The New Testament and The Qur’an,
(N.T. Matthew) 19-8 “Jesus answered, “Moses gave you permission to divorce your wives because you are so hard to teach. But it was not like that at the time of creation.”
(N.T. Mark) 2-18,21,22 …Some people came to Jesus and asked him, “Why is it that the disciples of John the Baptist and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but yours do not?”
“No one uses a piece of new cloth to patch up an old coat, because the new patch will shrink and tear off some of the old cloth, making an even bigger hole.
Nor does anyone pour new wine into used wineskins, because the wine will burst the skins, and both the wine and the skins will be ruined. Instead, new wine must be poured into fresh wineskins.
(Qur’an) 46-12 …while this Qur’an given in Arabic and confirms the previous ones…
(Qur’an) 35-31 What We have revealed to you from the Book is the Truth confirming what has preceded it. …
(Qur’an) 22-78 ... Follow the religion, of your forefather Abraham. God has named you Muslims both previously and now in this Qur’an, …
(Qur’an) 2-132 Abraham as well as Jacob commissioned their sons saying: "My sons, God has selected your religion for you. Do not die unless you are Muslims."
(Qur’an) 5-3 Today I have perfected your religion for you, and completed My favor towards you, and have consented to grant you Islam as a religion: i.e. total submission to God. …
It is apparent that Abraham’s religion was that which was chosen, in other words, organized by God Allmighty right from the very beginning. One should not be adversely affected by the word Muslim or Islam, especially remembering the context in which it has been used in our times. Islam is an Arabic word, meaning “submitting totally to The Most Merciful” and Muslim is the word used for people who submit themselves to God. With this meaning one wonders how many Muslims exist on earth? It is a difficult question to answer. In the Qur’an verse (5-3) it is mentioned that religion has been perfected by the message given in The Qur’an and that no other prophets will follow. The verses taken from the Holly Books have shown us that there are different facets in the teaching of religion. Taking into consideration that The Qur’an was sent down after The Old Testament and The New Testament in the seventh century, one may be able to see that the awareness of mankind has changed incredibly since the time of Moses, the time of Jesus and even the time of Muhammad. Can anyone argue that the teachings of religion proclaimed, and most likely explained to the people by the messengers of the times when the messengers were still alive have been the same after they passed away? Therefore, shall we continue to acknowledge religion in the same way as we did in the past or shall we try to understand the Holy Books better without being drowned within the rules and rituals mostly added and interpreted as the religion by the clerical hierarachy? I hope that before it is too late we may be able to answer that question.
We learned from The Qur’an that the first followers of The Qur’an, used to turn their faces to Jerusalem when they were praying. Then, they were asked in another verse, given to Muhammad at a later date, to turn to the sacred house Kabba, in Mecca. This change in the behaviour of the believers of The Qur’an was probably criticized by the Jews of that time who were living in the same area. Then the following verse was given to Muhammad,
(Qur’an) 2-142 Some fools among you will say: "Whatever turned them away from the Direction [of Prayer] toward which they used to face?" SAY: "God holds the East and West; He guides whomever He wishes towards a Straight Road."
Nowadays, we can reason the rituals which the believers perform when they are praying. The believers, turning their faces into one direction only, means togetherness. I do not think it has any sacred meaning. Certainly, in the time when the message was given to the people, it must have been very important to them. Although the act of the believers turning their faces into the same direction does estabilish togetherness between them, that direction may not necessarily lead them to “the true” direction. The true direction is the one which may lead people to their Lord. It is essential that people turn to that direction which I do not believe is either in the East or in the West, or in any other geographical direction. Geographical directions are only useful for humans living on earth in a three dimensional space.
The reason for the existence of the differences between the rituals, not only in the prayer direction but in all other ceremonies, obeyed by the followers of the different books is explained in the following verse of The Qur’an,
(Qur’an) 22-67 Each nation have We granted rituals which they must follow; so do not let anyone argue with you about the matter. Appeal to your Lord for you are on a path of straight guidance.
The true direction of prayer may be that mentioned in the verse above as ‘the path of true straight guidance’. Probably in time mankind may find that path.
The reason for sending different books to mankind is explained in the following verse,
(Qur’an) 13-38 We have sent messengers before you, O Muhammad, and granted them spouses and offspring. No messenger would have brought any sign except with God's permission. For each period there is Decree from God.
The Torah, The Gospels and The Qur’an were sent to the people living in the same geographical area, but at different times. Even though the rituals may be different, the message in essence was the same, i.e. believing in the oneness in the God Allmighty and to be a good human being. The ordinary person, whose main aim is to bring bread to the family, may not be able to understand the oneness in the message. Why? Is it that with the exception of a few religious scholars, most members of the clergy failed to show us the truth? It is not easy to find a satisfactory answer to this question. Furthermore some members of the clergy, throughout history, provoked the followers of the different books and encouraged their followers to go to war, in the name of God. However, the followers of those three books have been ordered not to kill innocent people without a just cause and quite often they were advised to forgive. I personally believe that the members of the clergy in any faith are supposed to be the men of God. Taking a look at the past, one starts to wonder who, most members of the clergy were serving? Were they the servants of God or the servants of man? Everybody has to answer this question for themselves. If somehow we start to question why they behaved in that way we may reach some answer. On the other hand in The Qur’an we may find the answer to our question;
(Qur’an) 10-19 Mankind was once just one nation; then they disagreed. …
(Qur’an) 2-213 Mankind was [once] one nation, so God dispatched prophets as heralds and warners. He sent the Book down along with them to bring the Truth, so as to judge among mankind concerning whatever they had been disagreeing about. However only those to whom the Book was addressed to showed differences in understanding it due to mutual jealousy towards one another, after explanations had been brought to them. By His permission, God has guided those who believe in the Truth of that they may have disagreed about. God guides anyone He wishes to a Straight Road.
It appears that, the evil in some individuals, although they may have been members of the clergy, overcame the piety in themselves, which caused the divergence from the essence of the teaching. Certainly, those individuals who were the cause of the diversification from the oneness of the belief, could not lead people onto the right path. Actually, according to the Gospels, those who were involved in the teaching of religion to the Jewish society two thousand years ago, were probably not following the true path and were severely accused by Jesus.
(N.T. Luke’s Gospel) 20-46,47 “Be on your guard against the teachers of the Law, who like to walk around in their long robes and love to be greeted with respect in the market place; who choose the reserved seats in the synagogues and the best laces at the feasts,
Who take advantage of widows and rob them of their homes, and then make a show of saying long prayers! Their punishment will be all the worse.”
(N.T. Matthew’s Gospel) 23-13 How terrible for you, teachers of the Law and Pharisees! You lock the door to the Kingdom of heaven in people’s faces, but you yourselves don’t go in, nor do you allow in those who are trying to enter.
Since that time things don’t appear to have changed much. In spite of this, let us not be too pessimistic. The Qur’an gives some hope for the future of the human race,
(Qur’an) 43-33 If it were not that mankind would become a single nation, …
We can take this verse as a promise to mankind for a better future. That time will probably come when all the people on earth finally achieve peace after solving the disagreements and disputes on different issues and then become one human nation. This nation, will be composed of individuals of higher consciousness and everything will be much different from the past and present times. One wonders if at that time, it will be like living in heaven on earth…
The continuity of the teaching of religion stressed in some of the verses of The Qur’an from time to time has some rather interesting expressions,
(Qur’an) 14-6 And remember when Moses told his folk:
(Qur’an) 61-6 And remember when Jesus, son of Mary, said: "O Children of Israel! I am the Messenger of God unto you confirming whatever came before me in the Torah…
Human beings have the ability to remember things of which they were aware previously. And in these verses, Muhammad was asked to remember some incidents which had happened long before he was born. Muhammad was somehow a witness to those incidents mentioned. This suggests that this is an issue worth thinking about, and an answer to that question may be found in the following verses,
(Qur’an) 17-1 Glory be to Him Who had His servant Muhammad travel by night from the Hallowed Mosque to the Further Mosque (Jerussalem) whose surroundings We have blessed, so We might show him some of Our signs! He is the Alert, the Observant!
(Qur’an) 53-18 Indeed, Muhammad did see some of the greatest signs of his Lord.
Certainly in this context one should also remember some verses from The New Testament,
(John’s Gospel) 8-58 “I am telling you the truth,” Jesus replied. “Before Abraham was born, ‘I Am’.”
(John’s Gospel) 1-29,30 The next day John saw Jesus coming to him, and said…
This is the one I was talking about when I said, ‘ A man is coming after me, but he is greater than I am, because he existed before I was born.’
These verses concerning Jesus and Muhammad give some indications related to the truth concerning the messengers that we are not yet aware of. Perhaps in the future, the human race may be allowed to have more knowledge about the truth of the messengers, provided that mankind is ready to receive and accept that knowledge.
Now, let us remember a verse from The Qur’an again which stresses on the continuity of the teaching of religion,
(Qur’an) 2-136 O believers SAY: "We believe in God and what has been sent down to us, and what was sent down to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob and their descendants, and what was given to Moses and Jesus, and what was given the [other] prophets by their Lord. We do not discriminate against any one of them and to Him we are submitted.
It is apparent that The Qur’an expects its followers to believe in all the messengers, who conveyed the Holy Message to mankind, without making any distinction between them. This verse should be taken as a duty to be fulfilled by the people who call themselves Muslims and they should try to see, so called ‘different faiths’ followed by different communities,as One, and by doing so they will encourage others to understand the onenes of the teaching of religion which should be be named as the Unity in faith. Remembering a verse mentioned previously from The New Testament (Ephesians 4-4,5,6); the message that I received from that verse is nothing but unity in religion. This idea is seen to be further strengthened in another verse of The Qur’an,
(Qur’an) 13-7 … and for every community there has been a guide
Therefore the announcement of every guide who showed the good deeds to their communities should be taken in consideration within the oneness of the teaching. This will allow us eventually to embrace all the faiths and eventually all the nations. As it was shown in some verses of The Qur’an (10-19 and 43-33) the promise given to the human race then may come to life.
The Qur’an shows us what to understand from religion,
(Qur’an) 3-19 Truly, the religion at God’s presence is Islâm…
(Qur’an) 5-3 Today I have perfected your religion for you, and completed My favor towards you, and have consented to grant you Islam as a religion: a commitment to live in peace. …
(Qur’an) 3-85 And whoever seeks a religion other than Islâm, it will never be accepted of him, and in the Hereafter he will be one of the losers.
The meaning of the word Islam was given previously, i.e. submission to God, and it was said that the word did not mean a new religion but the one that had existed from the very beginning. Submission to God by the believers is also mentioned in The Old Testamen and The New Testament,
(O.T. Psalms) 20-7 Some trust in their war chariots and others in their horses, but we trust in the power of the LORD our God.
(O.T. Psalms) 37-5 Give yourself to the LORD; trust in him, and he will help you.
O.T. Psalms) 125-1 Those who trust in the LORD are like Mount Zion, which can never be shaken, never be moved.
(O.T. Psalms) 3-5,6 Trust in the LORD with all your heart. Never rely on what you think you know.
Remember the LORD in everything you do, and he will show you the right way.
(N.T. James’s Letter) 4-7 So then submit yourselves to God. Resist the Devil,…
(N.T. Romans) 6-13 …give yourselves to God, as those who have been brought from death to life, and surrender your whole being to Him to be used for righteous purposes.
(N.T. James) 1-20,21 Man’s anger does not achieve God’s righteous purpose.
So get rid of every filthy habbit and all wicked conduct. Submit to God and accept the word that he plants in your hearts, which is able to save you.
The book that was given to Muhammad, The Qur’an, as we now know that it was the final book given to a prophet within the teachings of religion. These verses of The New Testament, The Old Testament as well as so many verses of The Qur’an advise us to submit to God. It was mentioned before that in Arabic, the word Islam means submitting to God. The continuity of the teaching of religion is shown in the verses of all three books. Therefore, now we are talking of one religion, which was named as Islam in Arabic, whether we like it or not. According to The Qur’an, all the previous scriptures gave the same message which came from the same source. Therefore, the message given to mankind throughout the past should not cause diversification between people. For this reason, as mentioned before, it might be preferable to call the believers according to the book they prefer to follow. For instance – the people of The Old Testament, the people of the New Testament or the people of The Qur’an. If one day we come to the understanding that there is one God, one faith which was expressed in different books in a way suitable to the level of understanding of the people of that time, then we may be able to eliminate at least some of our differences. At this point it might be necessary to ask the following question:
Who determined the book which an individual should follow? In most cases it was determined by our parents and by our society. Children are given the teaching of the religion of their parents at an early age and therefore everyone follows the teachings of religion as passed on to them without any questions being raised, and this way of teaching has continued for centuries. On the other hand we have been taught to question every issue related to our lives on earth. We may be able to understand from the Holy Books that reward and punishment are on an individual basis. If this is so, why is a person forced to choose the path that his parents are following. This is against the individual freedom of thought. If we believe in the creation, we must by now, know that everyone is given the ability to reason. Therefore, it is then up to the individual to reason. This act I believe is only possible when the person is aware that he IS an individual. The practice of freedom of thought, although it has been accepted particularly in the Western Countries, the reality seems to be different. Such that the believers seems to be settled with that which was put in their minds from the childhood by their parents and more so by the members of the clergy. The same issue of practicing freedom of thought in the area of teaching of religion in the countries where the majority of the population follow the Qur’an seems to be rather disappointing such that even questioning some of the practices, which has been accepted by the society but have no relations to the essence of the teaching of religion, is not very common and in some countries it may even result in capital punisment.
Now it is time to remember a verse from The New Testament
(N.T. Mark’s Gospel) 2-27 And Jesus concluded, “The Sabbath was made for the good of man; man was not made for the Sabbath.”
Throughout the world, even in the countries where rational thinking has been a strong element of the society, essentially due to the contribution of man, the teaching of religion contain taboos in so many ways. One wonders if this way of practising religion allowed genuine religion to be penetrated by religious idols? We can answer this question only by reading the book we are following and by looking at the rituals performed in the temple (synagogue, church or mosque). If, one day, we come to the understanding that religion is planned, organized and performed for man, on that day, man will start feeling as free as a bird. Because one aspect of religion is, giving man his freedom. We can see this aspect of religion stressed in the Holy Books,
(N.T. John’s Gospel) 8-31,32 So Jesus said to those who believed in him, ”If you obey my teaching, you are really my disciples; you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
Since we believe that Jesus’ words came from God, and there was nothing of man made religion in it, then everything he then said to his followers was from the Source. So why did Jesus use the word ‘truth’ ? Was it because the knowledge, in addition to the rules and regulations, given in The Old Testament was perhaps screened, or was it that in his times, the teaching of religion was contaminated by humans; by the religious teachers of those times? Since one can see how harshly Jesus approached the members of the clergy in his times, we feel that the most likely possibility is that genuine religious teaching was no longer there.
We see that “Freedom” is also mentioned in Peter’s Letter, where he draws the boundaries of personal freedom which should be remembered by everyone, particularly by the followers of The New Testament,
(N.T. Peter’s First Letter) 2-16 Live as free people; do not however, use your freedom to cover up any evil, but live as God’s slaves.
The Qur’an likewise talks about freeing people in addition to making things easy for the believers,
(Qur’an) 7-157 those who follow the Messenger, the Unlettered Prophet whom they will find written down for them in the Torah and the Gospel. He commands them to be decent and forbids them dishonor. He permits them wholesome things and prohibits them evil things, and relieves them of their heavy burdens and from the bindings that were upon them. …
(Qur’an) 2-256 There should be no compulsion in religion. Normal behavior stands out clearly from error; so anyone who rejects the Arrogant ones and believes in God has grasped the Firmest Handle which will never break. God is Alert, Aware.
(Qur’an) 73-20 …So Read whatever seems easy from the Qur’an…
The verses of both The New Testament and The Qur’an value the freedom of people. Especially the last two verses of The Qur’an stress on the fact that there should not be any force exerted on people to direct them to shape their belief. This is a confirmation of the fact that belief is personal. It is something between man and God. The Israelites were administered by those members of the clergy who at that time were appointed from the clan of the Levites. This way of administration seems to be reasonable, if we remember that it occurred more than three thousand years ago, when literacy was not all that common among the population. If we remember from The New Testament that Jesus, in his teachings, never mentioned the need for a clerical structure. As we shall see in the following chapters Jesus told his followers that there was only one teacher (Matthew 23-8). While saying this, Jesus was releasing the pressure exercised by the teachers of religion on the people. This again, strengthens the idea that religion is between man and God i.e. eliminating any human in-between. The Qur’an does not describe any profile of clerical structure nor for people to be led by anyone to lead their prayers. Why then is there a clerical hierarchy in the countries where the majority of the people follow either The New Testament or The Qur’an? What also seems rather interesting is that the clerical structure decides on issues to govern the daily lives of the people. This practice is against the freedom of the individual. These teachers seem to put themselves in place of God. For instance how can one human being forgive the sins of another? I don’t think anyone is given this authority. Therefore, the writer believes that followers of any Book should read the book he or she follows, with a sincere intention to understand the message and live accordingly. In the past, even though we were told in the Holy Books ,”Though shall not kill”, holy wars occurred, mostly spurred on by the leaders of religion in different parts of the world, causing people to kill innocent people in the name of God. It is still a mystery why people cannot respect each others beliefs and rights and live together as a huge human family? It appears that we have not yet learned the lessons given in the Holy Books.
The essence of the teaching of religion is explained by Jesus in the following verses,
(N.T. Matthew’s Gospel) 22-37,38,39,40 “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.
This is the greatest and the most important commandment.
The second most important comandment is like it:’Love your neighbour as you love yourself.’
The whole Law of Moses and the teachings of the prophets depend on these two commandments.”
In these verses Jesus clearly advises us that we have to love The Creator and the created one. One wonders what kind of a world we would be living in, if the followers of The New Testament fulfilled the request of Jesus? The writer believes that they, themselves are in the most suitable position to answer this question. In recent years a term which has been called ‘Christian Culture’ has been heard to be used quite frequently by the politicians of the western countries. Is it possible to say that, this culture, if such a culture exists, is really built on the foundation laid by Jesus? Again the answer should come from the followers of Jesus. If we pursue this subject of love, we find signs of love without any limit in the Gospels,
(N.T. Matthew’s Gospel) 5-38,39 “You have heard what was said, ‘an eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.’
But now I tell you: do not take revenge on someone who wrongs you. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, let him slap your left cheek too.”
(N.T. Matthew’s Gospel) 5-44 But now I tell you love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.
These last verses indeed order the followers of Jesus to love their enemies. In this case, could it possible to explain the behaviour of some countries where the majority of the people follow the teachings of Jesus and the politicians of those countries every so often mention about being an element of the so called ‘Christian Culture’,while at the same time creating enmity and the killing of innocents? A rather striking example can be seen in some Middle Eastern countries in our times. As far as we are all aware that deeds should be the reflection of one’s faith. If this is the case, how can they expect others to believe that they are faithful followers of the teachings of Jesus?
The Qur’an describes the believers in the following verse,
(Qur’an) 3-119 Here you are, loving such people while they do not love you! You believe in the whole Book (all of the scriptures).
Two out of ninetynine names used for The Creator in The Qur’an are The Most Beneficient and The Most Merciful which give only an indication of the infinite love of The Creator for the created ones. We must remember that, first man was created from the soil of the earth and life was breathed into his nostrils from God’s soul, (O.T.Creation 2-7 and, The Qur’an 38-72). Therefore, each one of us is a part of the Whole and, have the element of love in us even if we are not aware of it. It seems that the teaching of religion is a way of provoking love in us. Jesus asks man to love The Creator. How can man love God? Man was created with the five senses which enable the human beings to live on earth, a globe in a three dimensional space, and such that which he cannot see does not exist for him. We say that man should believe and love something that he can not see with his human eyes. Fortunately, the Holy Books give the good news to mankind that he will be given the necessary help to love his God,
(O.T. Deuteronomy) 30-6 The Lord your God will give you and your descendants obedient hearts so that you will love Him with all your heart,…
(Qur’an) 6-125 God lays anyone's breast open to Islam whom He wants to guide, …
Last two verses, as we have seen in so many other verses, force us to open our eyes on the Might of The Creator, as well as on how every thing is managed according to the Will of The All Mighty. On the other hand, we have to remember that The Creator inspired in everyone their piety and their evil doing (The Qur’an 91-8). Probably because evil doing was dominant in the behaviour of the people, according to The Old Testament, the Israelites suffered for so long in the past, and they were even taken into exile. The reason for the troubles the Israelites faced is explained in the following verses,
(O.T. Malachi) 2-10 …Didn’t the same God create us all? Then why do we break our promises to one another, and why do we despise the covenant that God made with our ancestors?
(Qur’an) 3-187 When God made a covenant with those who were given the Book (Scriptures) saying: "You shall explain it to mankind and not conceal it," But contrary to the covenant they tossed it away behind their backs and sold it for a paltry price. How wretched was what they bought [instead]!
(Qur’an) 4-155 All the troubles they faced was because of their breaking the covenant, their disbelief in God's signs and their killing the prophets without any right to do so,
One aspect of the teachings of religion is that it is Universal. Certainly the teaching should be proclaimed to one community at first and that should not be taken as a favor to that community. The teaching of religion then is expected to spread to the rest of the world. It teaches us that mankind is only one family. This is not expressed so strongly in The Old Testament but it is expressed rather strongly in The New Testament.
(N.T. Matthew) 5-44,45 But now I tell you: love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,
So that you may become the sons of your Father in heaven. For he makes his sun to shine on bad and good people alike, and gives rain to those who do good and to those who do evil.
(N.T. Luke) 13-29 People will come from the east and the west, from the north and the south, and sit down at the feast in the Kingdom of God.
(N.T. Mark) 11-17 He then taught the people: “It is written in the scriptures that God said, ‘My Temple will be called a house of prayer for the people of all nations’
(N.T. Mark) 13-31 “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.”
(N.T. Mark) 3-35 Whoever does what God wants him to do is my brother, my sister, my mother.
The teachings of Jesus was One while he was still alive. Remembering the historical developments amongst the followers of Jesus, the main line of his teachings is Catholicism, which means universality. Probably due to different interpretations of the teachings of Jesus, as well as the human additions to the genuine teaching, we all know that diversification was created amongst the followers of the same book, i.e. The New Testament. In other words, the end result was moving away from the concept of universality and now today, can anyone argues that the teaching and the practices put forward by the Roman Catholic Church is Universal?
The concept of universality is also seen in The Qur’an,
(Qur’an) 38-87 This Qur’an is only a Reminder to everyone in the Universe
(Qur’an) 21-107 We have merely sent you as a mercy for everybody in the Universe.
(Qur’an) 25-1 Blessed be He Who sent down this Qur'ân to His slave Muhammad that he may be a warner to all the creation.
Although The Qur’an tells us that the teaching given in it is universal, looking at the present state of the followers of The Qur’an, it is sad to say that they too could not reach the consciousness of universality. Diversification between the followers of The Qur’an has been a fact for centuries and it opened the followers of the Qur’an to provocations and even today we witness the bloodshed in certain communities. Tose communities and some others alike were warned by The New Testament in the following verse,
(N.T Mark) 3-24 If a country divides itself into groups which fight each other, that country will fall apart.
It is clear that neither the followers of The New Testament nor the followers of The Qur’an have been successful in understanding the message of unity in the teachings of religion. For this reason the human race has suffered extensively and is still suffering. The Qur’an tells us of the judgement for those who have created the present awful status of mankind,
(Qur’an) 13-25 Those who have broken God's Covenant after having pledged it, and created diversity in matters which were supposed to be joined and caused mischief on earth will be Cursed and theirs will be the worst home!
As it was mentioned previously, that although the essence of the teachings of religion according to the different books is the same, mankind has forgotten and has fallen apart from it throughout history. For that reason the new Messengers always attempted to remind the believers of God’s message. Surely this was the reason that Muhammad was given The Qur’an,
(Qur’an) 20-3 We descend this Qur’an to you as a reminder to those who fear God
The human race has indeed been reminded with the Message showing them the right path. According to the Holy Books, the messengers had been mistreated and some of them were even killed by their own people. The writer believes that we, in these enlightened times, should be grateful to those who came before and suffered in order to lead us on the right path. However, in spite of all this effort to lead us on the right path, what do we see when we look at the present state of mankind? Natural disasters, wars, disclosed or undisclosed appropriation of the rightful wealth of both countries and individuals. Exploitation of human beings with little or no regard to age, unbearable injustice in the sharing of the wealth of the world, diversification on the basis of language, ethnicity, and so called difference of religion, creating ‘others’ and excluding and denigrating them, all of which has resulted ın worldwide disorder. Is this the “God’s Kingdom” mentioned in The New Testament? Not at all. It appears that the human race will wait a long time for this to come true. Whatever the human race faces or has faced before, is due to the mistakes of the people themselves. Certainly most of the guilt falls on the shoulders of the developed nations. Every person on earth is now, in one respect or another, suffering. This general outlook was put into words in the following verse which also underlines the universality of The Qur’an,
(Qur’an) 4-79 O Muhammad ,any good that happens to you comes from God, while anything bad that happens to you is through yourself…
If even Muhammad had to face the eventual results of his deeds, we too must take the necessary lessons from this verse. Everyone must endeavour to control their earthly desires. To acquire this, love is essential. Once love, which is the main issue in the teachings of religion, is firmly estabilished in our hearts, the diversification due to superficial reasons will be annihilated and this will create the unification of the human race and it will be estabilished on a firm ground.
It may be necessary to remember again that the teachings of religion should be on an individual basis. Religion was given to us, and the messengers who conveyed the message suffered so much, therefore, every individual should hold on to God’s Religion and keep it in their hearts not allowing any chance that it may be sullied by man-made rules.
It was mentioned in the previous pages that this book is basically concentrated on the Holy Books which appeared in the Middle East. However, when we look at other parts of the world we see that those people too have their rituals and beliefs. The Qur’an makes a clear statement about it,
(Qur’an) 10-47 And for every community , a Messenger is preordained …
According to this verse the essence of the belief systems and the rituals of people living in other parts of the earth must also have come from the same source which also sent The Old Testament, The New Testament, and The Qur’an. If we respect and try to obey the teachings of those three books, then the belief systems that we are aware of in different parts of the earth should be approached with the same respect. To be able to achieve this; first we have to understand that the teachings of religion is for the individual. Everyone should be able to read all the books which give the Holy Message in their own language. This will eliminate the effect of the human factor at least on our belief, and individuals then would be free to choose the book which they wish to follow. It may not necessarily be the book which their family and the society in which they live has imposed on them, starting from their childhood. In such a selection, everyone will choose his book on his own free will. In this way, the effect of institutions which are self appointed, will be eliminated. Let us remember that neither Jesus nor Muhammad mentioned anything about the need of a religious institution to give vital decisions on how individuals should govern their lives. Fortunately we have civil law and in this context we have to remember what Jesus said,
(N.T. Mark’s Gospel) 12-17 So Jesus said ”Well, then, pay to the emperor what belongs to the emperor, and pay to God which belogs to God.”
If all individuals are allowed to choose the book they desire to follow with using own free will, it will help for the estabilishment of Unity in religion, as well as being a great help for building a united world which will be based on the freedom of the individual. Such a world where everyone is free to choose his Holy book means that everyone will respect each others belief. I wonder if that world is the one that was mentioned as “God’s Kingdom” in the Gospels.
In the opinion of the writer, after reading the verses from the Holy Books it seems that the message was given to mankind to remind them that they are human and that they must live a decent life as a human being. The message requires everyone to live in harmony with each other and with the whole creation. Although man was given the control of everything on earth and humans benefitted from nature throughout the past, and continues to do so at present, it should be limited within the basic needs of man. On the other hand the children of Adam have failed to observe that limitation. Instead, man has been exploiting the earth beyond his needs and without giving it its due respect. This might be a prominent factor in the upheaval that we have been experiencing for centuries. Part of the world is suffering from hunger while the other part is exhausting the resources without limitation. Is mankind preparing its own end? Probably so, if the developed countries do not all agree on a solution soon. People of the developed countries have a lot to learn from the so called “primitive people,” i.e. the indigenous people of Australia and America.
FAITH
The meaning of the word faith, in any dictionary, is generally described as the belief in religious dogmas. The term dogma, is understandable if we approach the teachings of religion using our human logic, because the human mind only believes in that which can be seen with the human eye or that which can be heard by human ears. The human mind cannot perceive heaven and hell; and a person may be justified if he claims that he cannot see The Creator. Such was the behaviour of the Israelites who asked Moses if they could see The God of the Israelites whom Moses had mentioned every so often. Probably, for this reason The Qur’an frequently mentions people who have wisdom and knowledge, people who reason and people who can see with their hearts. In different countries, where the majority of the people follow one of the books, i.e. The Old Testament, The New Testament or The Qur’an, they tend to believe in the majority that they, themselves, are the only true believers. If we consider the countries where people follow The Qur’an, in general they do not look upon the followers of the other books as the believers. Even though the book they follow, The Qur’an, advises them to do just the opposite,
(Qur’an) 2-285 The Messenger (Muhammad) believes in what has been sent down to him from his Lord, and [so do] believers; everyone believes in God and His angels, His books and His messengers. We do not differentiate between any of His messengers.
This verse stresses the need for the followers of The Qur’an, not to reject any of the messengers, not to make any distinction between them, because they all gave the same message and those people who believed in the message, when it was proclaimed, were all called ‘The Believers’ in The Qur’an, without making any distinction between them, and all were given the glad tidings of a reward from their Lord according to the following verse,
(Qur’an) 2-62 Those who believe and those who are Jews, Christians and Sabeans, in fact anyone who believes in God and the Last Day, and do righteous good deeds will receive their earnings from their Lord: no fear will lie upon them nor need they feel saddened.
.
We again notice that The Qur’an gathers all the followers of the previous messengers under same umbrella, because this message is universal, and the continuity in the teachings of religion can also be seen in some other verses of The Qur’an,
(Qur’an) 3-67 Abraham was neither a Jew nor a Christian, but he was a Seeker [after Truth], a Muslim; he was no associator of others with God.
(Qur’an) 10-71,72 Quote Noah's story to them when he told his people:.,
… and I have been ordered to become a Muslim."…
(Qur’an) 10-84 Moses said: "My people, if you believe in God, then rely on Him if you are true Muslims."
(Qur’an) 5-111 -"When I inspired the disciples of Jesus to believe in Me and My messenger, they said: 'We believe, so take witness that we are Muslims.
The verses of The Qur’an given above sheds some light on the meaning of the faith that it should be a true belief which requires putting one’s trust totally on God Almighty.
Within the same context, The Qur’an again stresses the fact that belief should be a true one,
(Qur’an) 49-14 The desert Arabs say: "We believe." O Muhammad tell them this: "You have not yet believed, but say [instead]: 'We have become Muslim. Yet belief has not penetrated your hearts. If you obey God and His messenger, He will not slight you in any of your actions. God is Forgiving, Merciful!"
A similar approach can be seen in the Old Testament and the New Testament too,
(O.T. 2 Samuel) 16-7 But the LORD said to him, “Pay no attention to how tall and handsome he is. I have rejected him, because I do not judge as man judges, Man looks at the outward appearance, but I look at the heart.”
(N.T. Matthew’s Gospel) 15-7,8,9 You hypocrites! How right Isaiah was when he prophesied about you!
‘These people, says God, honor me with their words, but their heart is really far away from me.
It is no use for them to worship me, because they teach man made rules as though they were my laws!’
Indeed since the Faith is an abstract term and cannot be evaluated by man made measures, and may only be noticed on the deeds of the person because of the reflection from his heart, this fact again brings us to the idea that belief is a value of the individual, and should be accepted and respected in its natural state, provided that, that state is acquired by the individual in accordance with the persons free will.
Previously it was mentioned that the word Muslim is used for someone who submits himself to God. Certainly that definition is a literal one . Only God knows who really submits himself to God. Therefore, The Qur’an is pointing out to the fact that being a follower of a book does not necessarily make the person ‘A Believer’. The Qur’an also stresses that belief has to be in the heart of the person, otherwise it is probably just a communal act. This is why, right from the beginning of this book, it was stressed that the teachings of religion should be taken on a personal basis. Certainly there is no need to point out that this verse (Qur’an 49-14) is not only for the followers of The Qur’an but also for the followers of any Holy Book. We can see a similar warning in the teachings of Jesus when he was talking to his disciples, about the fact that faith should go into the heart of the person.
(Matthew’s Gospel) 17-20,21 “It was because you do not have enough faith,” answered Jesus. “I assure you that if you have faith as much as a mustard seed, you can say to this hill, ‘Go from here to there!’ and it will go. You could do anything!”
(Matthew’s Gospel) 21-21,22 Jesus answered, “I assure you that if you believe and do not doubt, you will be able to do what I have done to this fig tree…
If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer.”
(N.T. Matthew) 14-29,30,31 “Come!” answered Jesus. So Peter got out of the boat and started walking on the water to Jesus.
But when he noticed the strong wind, he was afraid and started to sink down in the water. “Save me Lord!” he cried.
At once Jesus reached out and grabbed hold of him and said, “What little faith you have! Why did you doubt?”
(Mark’s Gospel) 9-23 Yes, said Jesus, “if you yourself can! Everything is possible for the person who has faith.”
Now we are aware that faith is essential in the teachings of religion and this was expressed in The Qur’an as “faith should go into the heart of the person.” Certainly this is not something which is a physical phenomenon. Jesus also gives some clarification on the issue by saying that ‘believe and do not doubt’. We also understand from the above verses that, great belief seems to give the person power. But I trust that those with great belief use their ability, for good deeds and they are not to use it against the Holy Plan and against the aim of the Creation.
As we know, a person who is a follower of The Qur’an is called a Muslim, but this is not a sufficient prerequisite for faith to go into the heart of that person. If we remember the verses of The Qur’an (49-14; 10-84) it is apparent that only the true believers are those who are called in The Qur’an as “True” Muslims and it seems that only they put all their trust in their Lord God. With regard to this, i.e. to trust God only, and to see the reflections of that act on the life of such a person, we need to look at the teachings of Jesus,
(Luke’s Gospel) 16-11,13 If, then, you have not been faithful in handling worldly wealth, how can you be trusted with true wealth?
No servant can be the slave of two masters; he will hate one and love the other; he will be loyal to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money.
It is obvious that no one can posses true wealth by being a servant of Money. Therefore, people who call themselves Jews, Christians or Muslims, and those who bring their material gains to the forefront, should think about the whole issue. Who could claim that, through creating man-made sects, dividing the human race and putting boundaries between them, is the behaviour of a true believer. Can a true believer of Lord God, see the followers of the different books as others? We must work hard to be able to see that there are no differences between people following different books.
Now, let us remember a verse (Matthew 17-20) from the teachings of Jesus, where
He used the term ‘mustard seed’ to give an idea to his followers regarding the amount of faith. Certainly, it was a way of teaching the earthly people, like ourselves, who mesure everything with earthly concepts. However, I do not think it is possible to measure ones’ faith; only God knows this. Meanwhile, The Qur’an points out to a probable increase in faith,
(Qur’an) 8-2 Believers are merely those whose hearts feel wary whenever God is mentioned and whose faith increases when His verses are recited to them. On their Lord only do they rely.
(Qur’an) 48-4 He is the One Who sends down Serenity on believers' hearts so they may add faith to the faith they already have. God commands the armies of Heaven and Earth; God is Aware, Wise.
(Qur’an) 5-93 Those who believe and do righteous good deeds, there is no sin on them for what they have done in the past, if from now on they protect themselves from any mischief and do righteous deeds mature in faith. God loves those who do righteous good deeds.
We are now well aware of the fact that a person’s faith may increase in time, this makes the believer to rely more on his Lord. Another outcome of the increase in faith is that it directs people towards improving their relationships with other people, and to be involved in doing good deeds. It is interesting that the last verse concentrates only on protection from mischief and also the doing of righteous deeds and does not mention performing of the timely rituals. I wonder if that verse and some other similar ones tell us the essential point of the teaching of religion. Here we can see that this verse does not single out any group of people, whether they are followers of the books mentioned, or that they are nonbelievers, who will benefit from the righteous deeds of the faithful ones. This is because the message itself is Universal and we must remember the fact that God is the Lord of the whole creation.
N.T. Matthew) 5-45 …For He makes His sun to shine on bad and good people alike, and gives rain to those who do good and to those who do evil.
We learn from The Qur’an that when faith goes into the heart of the believer, an outcome of this is that the faithful one will be at peace and will work for peace. Nobody will work for peace unless he is at peace with himself because what is in the heart will be reflected on the persons deeds and talks and thoughts. In The Qur’an, it is possible to find more than a hundred verses which mention and join the two issues together i.e.having faith and concentrating on establishing peace. Only a few of these are given below as examples,
(Qur’an) 7-42 Those who believe and strive for peace, within their ability, will become the inhabitants of Paradise and they will live there for ever. ( We never assign any soul more than it can cope with.)
(Qur’an) 41-8 The ones who believe and perform righteous good deeds for peace will have payment which will never be withheld from them."
(Qur’an) 4-124 A true believer, male or female, who performs righteous good deeds for peace, will enter the Paradise and will not face any injustice even the size of a speck.
It is a well kown fact that, the aim of most of the followers of The Qur’an is to abide in Heaven in the Hereafter. Although there are so many, only a few of the verses given above from The Qur’an, convey us a very clear message. The message of the verses given above, is that to abide in Heaven one has to be a true believer and he has to do righteous deeds. What is so interesting, is that these verses do not mention which Book the true believer should follow. This point actually is further clarified in the following verse in The Qur’an,
(Qur’an) 7-43 We will strip away any rancor [that lingers] in their breasts. Rivers will flow beneath them and they will say: "Praise be to God Who led us to this! We would never have been guided if God had not led us on. Our Lord's messengers have brought the Truth." They will hear someone call out: "Here is the Garden you have inherited because of what you have done!"
It is clear that the last verse uses the word ‘Messengers’ .i.e. not just Muhammad as most followers of The Qur’an think, but all who proclaimed the Holy Message to mankind to direct them onto the right path. If on the other hand, the message was directed to the followers of The Qur’an only, it would be a reason for diversification, and the message of The Qur’an would lose its Universality. Therefore no-one can question the universality of the message of The Qur’an which according to its own wording, is actually the confirmation of the previous messages given by the previous messengers. This is another way of expressing the ‘Unity’ in the teachings of religion.
In those countries where most of the people identify themselves as Muslim, it is possible to remember that some groups of people and even some of the politicians have tried to keep the issue of religion at the top of the countries agenda. This has created unnecessary disputes and even caused some social disorder. If one wonders whether or not such behaviour is in accordance with the teachings of The Qur’an, which should be the reference on matters of religion, it is best to read the following verse,
(Qur’an) 38-28 Shall We treat those who believe and perform righteous good deeds just like mischief-makers on earth? Or should We treat those pious ones like disbelievers?
Is it not contrary to God’s Religion, for someone to follow ‘man-made’ religion, and present himself as a believer to the society and to exert pressure on others who do not think as himself? Is it actually possible for a true believer who has reached the awareness of oneness, to pressure people, and by doing so, cause disorder in the community? I do not think so, because such behaviour is against the expectation of The Qur’an which advises people to do righteous deeds. Within this framework let us remember two verses given above,i.e. (7-42,43), which give us the good news that ‘any hatred is removed from the hearts of the true believers’. Furthermore The Qur’an gives us more advice,
(Qur’an) 3-103 Cling firmly together to God's rope, and do not be divided into sects. and remember God's Favour on you; for you were enemies of each other; but He made you reconcile your differences and He joined your hearts together, so that, by His Grace, you became brethren.
You were on the brink of a pit of fire, and He saved you from it. Thus God makes His verses, clear to you, so that you may find the right path.
Is it possible for any one, who nurses a grudge against others, ‘to hold to the God’s rope’? While, due to the teachings of The Qur’an even enemies become friends, is it appropriate to use the Holy Message as an instrument to cause disorder in a country? The Holy Message can only serve as a means for unification, but not for division. However, it is possible for some people to use the holy message for their earthly goals even though they do not show any inclination towards putting some effort into understanding the message. Indeed, this is what we are witnessing to day- division between the people of our planet because of so called religious differences. No-one has the right to blame religion for the present disorder. The present diversifications are due to different interpretations and practices which can clearly be seen and the only reason for this is man himself, certainly not any ordinary man but the members of the clergy who introduced the man made rules and the politicians who try to benefit from the existence of any kind of diversifications amongst the people in a country or in general on earth.
The believers, according to The Qur’an, will be rewarded, provided that the belief is not confined to speech, belief must be in the heart and be followed by righteous deeds, and such behavior of a true believer is also underlined in The New Testament,
(Qur’an) 34-37 It is not your wealth nor your children that will bring you close to Us in patronage; only those who believe and perform righteous deeds.
(Qur’an)10-9 Their Lord guides those, who believe and perform righteous deeds for peace, through their faith:
(Qur’an)40-58 A blind and a sighted person are not equal, nor are those who believe and perform righteous deeds, and evildoers, Seldom do you reason.
(N.T. James) 1-20,21,22 Man’s anger does not achieve God’s righteous purpose.
So get rid of every filthy habit and all wicked conduct. Submit to God and accept the word that he plants in your hearts, which is able to save you.
Do not deceive yourselves by just listening to his word; instead, put it into practice.
(N.T. James) 2-26 So then as the body without the Spirit is dead, also faith without action is dead.
For a believer to continue his journey on the path to salvation, it seems that belief should be followed by righteous deeds which eventually may take the believer to be close to the presence of his Lord. The verse (40-58) from The Qur’an, compares the difference between ‘doing evil and doing righteous deeds’, to the difference between ‘the blind and those who see’. If this is the case then, how can those on earth who cannot see the truth, try hard to defend religion. The “religion” they are defending, I don’t think has any relation to God’s Religion.
According to The Qur’an, what seems interesting is that for a person to believe and to strengthen his faith, he needs God’s help,
(Qur’an)49-7,8 …but God has endeared faith for you that it seems attractive within your hearts, and made you hate disbelief, immorality and rebelliousness. They are the ones who reached maturity.
As a grace and favour from God . God is Aware, Wise.
(Qur’an) 58-22 … God has engraveed faith on their hearts, and assists them with a spirit from Himself, and will show them into gardens through which rivers flow, to live there for ever. God will approve of them while they will be pleased with Him. Those are the God’s Party and those will be the successful ones.
Certainly the people who have had their faith strengthened by the Spirit are the very fortunate ones because they are allowed to be a member of ‘the Party of Allah’, which, in Arabic is known as Hizbullah. One has to think whether the definition of The Qur’an on ‘the Party of Allah’ is confirmed with the realities of our times…
The Old Testament also points out to the need for God’s help for human beings to have faith,
(O.T. Jeremiah) 24-4,7 So the LORD said to me,
I will give them the desire to know that I am the LORD. Then, they will be my people, and I will be their God, because they will return to me with all their heart.
The advice of The Qur’an to the faithful ones is rather clear,
(Qur’an)2-208 You who believe, enter alltogether into peace! Do not follow Satan's footsteps; he is an open enemy of yours.
The believers are required not to follow the footsteps of ‘the devil’, instead they are advised to turn to peace all together. Although there have been vast numbers of the followers of the Holy Books in the world, we fail to see that peace has been accepted by all of them. We hope that the followers of the Holy Books, in time, with God’s help will be able to see the truth and then be the true believers and finally turn to peace. At the same time we have to understand that for someone to be a true believer, it seems that God’s permission is required;
(Qur’an)10-99 If your Lord had so wished, everyone on earth would have believed, all of them together! So will you force mankind to become believers?
(Qur’an)10-100 It is not up to any soul to believe unless it happens with God's permission; He places a blight on those who do not use their reason.
What is so interesting is that mankind has been informed about the rewards of being a true believer and doing righteous deeds. On the other hand, The Qur’an says that to be a true believer is only possible by God’s permission. This certainly provokes one to think about it. When we look at the behaviour of people even in the same community, of which most of the people follow the same Holy Book, we observe differences. I think, The Qur’an seems to put some light on that,
(Qur’an) 25-20 …We have made each of you as a trial instrument for the others.
(Qur’an) 29-3 We have tested the ones who preceded them with strife. God certainly knows the truthful ones as well as the liars.
(Qur’an) 47-31 We will test you till We know those who strive among you as well as those who are patient. We will test your reactions.
(Qur’an) 91-7,8 The flesh is perfected by Him.
Then He inspired in him hypocrisy and his piety.
Let us imagine that some of the believers have been successful in the tests they faced, because they had the patience, and awareness and wisdom, which are actually gifts from The All Mighty and they, according to The Qur’an will be rewarded, because they have managed to pass the tests which were put in front of them. One may ask “is there justice in life that we are to face the tests and some were furnished with the qualities to be successful in them.” We are not aware of how the system works; but it is a possibility that to have some examples as those described by the Holy Plan in every community, so that other members of the community will be provoked to think, and then to imitate them The prime reward according to the author’s idea, is the persons own spiritual progress if he becomes successful in the tests which he had to face. Now, one cannot help questioning about other people who actually have been instruments in the test for someone else; what will happen to those who played their role in the test? We cannot give a direct answer, but we may be able to find some clues in The Qur’an,
(Qur’an) 5-48 We have prescribed a path and a method for each of you. If God had wished, He might have made you all into one community, but He has not done so in order to test you with what He has given you. Compete rather in doing good deeds. To God is your return entirely, and He will notify you concerning anything you have been disagreeing about
(Qur’an)7-7 Then surely, We shall narrate unto them the whole story with knowledge, and indeed We are aware of everything.
These verses remind us that, because of the limitations of our senses there may be issues that we cannot yet reason. Nevertheless, it seems that according to The Qur’an, those unknown issues will be made clear to the human race when the time comes. It might be a good idea for the believers to try to see everything they face as a complimentary piece of The Whole. The memory of man is normally rather short and considers only the short time gains. On the other hand, an incident which may be unacceptable to a person may work out for his favour in the long run. For that reason believers should act with patience and they have to try to clean the evil from their thoughts and try to do good deeds. To accomplish this we cannot neglect the power of the persons’ driving force and how powerful his personal wish. Because we know that if the wish is pure, it will be answered,
(Matthew’s Gospel) 7-7, “Ask, and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you.”
(Matthew’s Gospel) 7-9 Would any of you who are fathers give your son a stone when he asks for bread?
(O.T. Psalms) 9-10 Those who know you, LORD, will trust you; you do not abondon anyone who comes to you.
The Qur’an advises us never lose hope under any circumstances. As an example we must remember what Jacob said to his sons,
(Qur’an) 12-87 “O My sons! go and search for Joseph and his brother; never give up hope of God’s Mercy.; only disbelieving folk despair of God's mercy."
I think it might be a good idea to take the advice of Jacob to his sons as an advice of The Qur’an to us all, because The Qur’an gives us the good news that people will eventually be the believers,
(Qur’an)12-106 Most of them do not become believers in God before they are involved in associating others with Him.
Looking at our personal past, everyone will remember the mistakes they have made, and furthermore it is more than likely that quite often we might have repeated the same mistakes. Nevertheless, at least some people try to improve themselves to be a better being. After struggling a long time one may come to a better understanding of life and certainly of himself. Mistakes are not only bound to individuals, nations also make mistakes. The Qur’an makes some comments in the following verses on the mistakes of the individuals as well as about the wrong doings of the nations,
(Qur’an) 2-27 Those who break God's covenant after they have promised to keep it, and sever whatever God has ordered to be joined, and caused enmity on earth, will be the losers
(Qur’an) 5-12 God made a covenant with the Children of Israel,
(Qur’an) 5-14 We took their covenant from those who say: "We are Christians;" then they forgot to receive a lesson from the message, so We have stirred up enmity and jealousy among them until Resurrection Day. God will notify them about whatever they have been accomplishing.
Let us hope that we all remember what we have promised to accomplish on earth… In relation to the last three verses given above, it may be interesting to remember another verse from The Qur’an;
(Qur’an) 57-22 No disaster ever happens on earth nor to yourselves unless it is [contained] in a Book even before We brought it into existence. That is easy for God to do,
The last verse, as well as the other verses of three Holy Books, should be read as pieces of The Whole. I feel that such would be the behaviour of a true believer who, as a result of his faith, should approach every individual with patience and love. Certainly such an approach to an evil doer who creates disorder on earth should not be a factor to stop him from being tried by the civil law which is valid of that time.
The continuity of the teachings of religion is further stressed in the following verses of The Qur’an,
(Qur’an) 5-43 How can they choose you as a judge when they have the Torah, which contains God's judgment? Yet even then they will turn away, and such persons are not believers
(Qur’an) 5-47 Let the people of the Gospel judge by what God has sent down in it; Those who do not judge by what God has sent down are perverse!
These verses are very clear in pointing out that every community should follow the book they have chosen. Certainly this is not a contradiction to the personal freedom of the individual. Here we are talking about a community of individuals who are allowed to choose the book they want to follow without any kind of pressure applied on them by their families and in general by the community they live in. This is stressed further in The Qur’an,
(Qur’an) 7-34 Every nation has its appointed term; so whenever their deadline comes they will not be able to postpone it even for an hour, …
(Qur’an) 13-38 … For each period there is a decree from God.
It appears that there is an appointed term for every nation and there is a decree for every period. Nevertheless the decree given in each book still seems to be valid (Qur’an 5-43, 5-47). On the other hand there is a promise concerning the future of mankind,
(Qur’an) 43-33 If it were not that mankind is going to be a single nation, …
It is a good news that in time mankind will be just one nation with the help of God Almighty, contrary to whatever some evil doers plan, and perform. Actually such a promise may be seen in the Gospels too,
(Mark’s Gospel) 11-17 …”It is written in the scriptures that God said, ’My Temple will be called a house of prayer for the people of all the nations’…”
The scriptures were given to the Israelites. In the above verse it is stated that God’s Temple will be a prayer house for all the nations, not only for the Israelites. This statement is a clear promise to mankind, that there will be no diversifications in future, at least in people’s faith. This will be a firm step in the right direction towards forming one human nation. It is possible to say that the temple mentioned here may not necessarily point to a physical temple, instead it gives the sign of the establishment of God’s Religion, which is Unity. To this end; individuals should perform their duties. This does not require any kind of special mission. But the prime requirement is that everyone approaches the whole creation with Love and to try to see everything within the wholeness,i.e. everything is just a fragment of the Whole and everything is tied to each other. When all the nations become one, there will be no differences between individuals; and the outcome of which will be that the resources of the globe will be used for the benefit of everyone by creating a better environment, just, sharing of wealth, formation of healthy communities. Certainly, when there are no more differences between the nations, because there will be no reason for wars, then money previously spent to finance the war machinery will be spent on the welfare of the people. I wonder if such a picture is the materialization of the New Creation mentioned in The Old Testament,
(O.T. Isaiah) 65-17,18,19,25 The Lord says, “ I am making a new earth and new heavens. The events of the past will be completely forgotten.
Be glad and rejoice forever in what I create. The New Jerusalem I make will be full of joy, and her people will be happy.
…There will be no weeping there, no calling for help.
Wolves and lambs will eat together; …”
The New Jerusalem mentioned here seems to be something symbolic, and it should not be taken as something special only for the Israelites. The Creator advises in strong terms to the created ones “not to cause any diversification,” because of this we can not expect Him to show any favoritism to any community. The people who will live in such a world described in the verses above, will be the lucky ones. We have to make some effort towards the creation of that world where a wolf and a lamb will eat together. The best effort one can perform is the wish with a purified heart -which is a gift from The Creator- the creation of such a wonderful world.
WORSHIP
(Qur’an) 51-56 I have only created sprites and men so they may worship Me;
The term “worship” may take different meanings in different languages and communities. One of them which points out to the delicacy and refinement at the utmost level of that word according to one Turkish scholar (Y.N.Öztürk) is that the word “worship” means a mutual devotion and love between The Creator and the created one. At this point let us remember a verse from The Qur’an which sheds some light on this relationship,
(Qur’an) 58-22 O Muhammad! you will not find any people who believe in God and the Last Day showing affection for anyone who oppose God and His messenger, even though they are their own fathers, their sons, their brothers or anyone from their family connection. God has engraveed faith on their hearts, and assists them with a spirit from Himself, and will show them into gardens through which rivers flow, to live there for ever. God will approve of them while they will be pleased with Him. Those are the God’s Party and those will be the successful ones.
This verse talks about a ‘Mutual Contentment’, based on love between The Creator and the created one. How could it be otherwise, since the creation is based on love and the Holy Message is aimed at giving the human being, one of the created ones, his freedom of thought. We know from The Qur’an that no force is to be exerted on any person with regard to his belief (Qur’an 2-256). Therefore, we understand that the word ‘Worship’ encompasses all the physical and spiritual activities of the individual that please the Creator. However, such acts do not guarantee that the individual will abide in the heavens in the hereafter as believed by the followers of The Qur’an. Actually, such an expectancy would bring the delicate relationship between The Creator and the created one down to a ‘trade-off’. Such a belief is not the correct way to remember the infinite divinity of the Source. Throughout the history we have learned of the unacceptable behaviour of certain members of the Clergy in contrast to the teachings of the religion presented in written form i.e. the Holy Books; and for this reason, we must be aware of our aim within the frame-work of our beliefs. The believers have been advised to perform prayers. But we must also be aware that our prayers, may or may not be rewarded, and this fact was clearly expressed to Muhammad in the following verse of the Qur’an
(Qur’an)17-79 At night, wake up to recite the Qur’an as an additional prayer for yourself. So that your Lord may raise you to that praised and glorified dimension.
This verse of the Qur’an is an incredible one. The verse appeals directly to Muhammad who was the messenger of God and who was to give the message of the Qur’an to mankind. The Qur’an was given to him in parts, and took many years to be completed. During those times the message was firstly proclaimed by Muhammad to the followers of the Qur’an. However, even though Muhamad was the messenger who was to convey the message in verses as well as in deeds, and also to explain it to the people with words, the verse clearly advises him to recite The Qur’an in some parts of the night so that he may be raised to a higher dimension. Here, what is amazing, is that even the messenger of God needs to progress spiritually and still, even for him, there is no guarantee that he will definitely reach that glorified dimension. The verse says he may, in other words, with God’s will. One wonders, why the messenger who conveyed The Qur’an to mankind was advised to recite The Qur’an in the quietness of the night? We may see a possible answer to this question in The Qur’an,
(Qur’an)73-1,2,3,4 You who are bundled up in garments,(Prophet Muhammad)
stay up all night, except for a little while:
…and recite the Qur’an slowly with a pleasant tone with reasoning.
If Muhammad was asked to recite The Qur’an, with reasoning, doesn’t that make it a necessity for the followers of The Qur’an also to recite it with reasoning? In all the countries where people in the majority are the followers of The Qur’an, recite The Book in Arabic; do they speak Arabic? No, with the exception of a few, they certainly do not speak Arabic; and since the language of the Qur’an being in the Arabic of the seventh century language of Mecca and Medina this adds a further handicap with regard to the understanding of it. Then, we may ask the following question; Can, anyone reason a text he reads in a language which he does not know? Certainly he cannot, because he does not understand it. Then if we pursue the issue further; Can a person who does not speak Arabic understand the message of The Qur’an? He certainly can not understand the message. For that very reason any follower of the Qur’an who cannot speak Arabic has to question what he thinks he knows with regard to the message of the Qur’an. Because the message which he thinks he has knows is that which was given to him by the members of the clergy. How can he be sure that the message given to him by the members of the clergy reflects the truth from The Qur’an. No one person can truthfully give an affirmative answer to that question. Certainly when we speak of the truth from The Qur’an, I doubt if any person has the authority to give the “absolute truth” which can only be known by the Source itself. Until now what is said about the understanding of the message of the Qur’an by its followers is applicable in general for the followers of other books too. We have to remember that the teachings of religion are for the individual, and these individuals make the whole human race. The truth of every individual is different because their conception is different and this fact is due to differences between their spiritual realities, and accordingly, each individual is bound to understand the Holy Message differently if and when they read the message themselves. However such a difference is nothing to be worried about, because that message which comes to him, when he reads the book he follows, will be natural to him and it will be in his heart and it will be much better than something he memorizes.
Some differences have also been observed between the aims of the believers too. For most of the people the aim of the believer is to abide in the heaven in The Hereafter,
(Qur’an) 19-61 The Gardens of Eden which the Most Beneficient has promised His servants even though they are Unseen. Verily, His promise will be fulfilled.
(Qur’an) 55-46,62 Anyone who fears to stand before his Lord will have two gardens
Besides both of these, there will be two extra gardens;
There are a number of verses in The Qur’an which promise Heavens to the believers in The Hereafter, while other verses promise something quite different,
(Qur’an) 9-72 God has promised believers, whether they are men or women, gardens through which rivers flow to live in for ever, and beautiful dwellings in the gardens of Eden. But approval by God is the supreme Achievement!
(Qur’an) 50-31 The Paradise will be brought up a short distance from the pious ones.
(Qur’an) 50-35 There, they will have anything they wish , …and more besides those when they are in Our presence.
(Qur’an) 3-14 …God’s presence holds the finest retreat.
It may be interesting to look at one of the verses above (Qur’an 50-31) before looking at the others, all of which indicate the presence of some rewards in the Hereafter promised to the believers. This particular verse mentions about bringing the paradise close to the believer. Normally one expects to reach the paradise in other words going to it; while in this verse it is said that paradise is to be brought to the pious one. It is rather interesting; one wonders if it is a reward to the pious ones while they are still alive on earth? Is it a reward such that the pious ones are allowed to create their own paradise on earth?
Now let us look at the rest of the verses given above which promise the believers some rewards in the Hereafter. Human beings because of their nature, in general prefer to make some effort, if there is some reward at the end of their effort. Which of the rewards that was promised in The Hereafter, according to the Holy Books, to the believers that one would pursue? I feel that the choice is affected by the persons faith. Is the choice of the believer paradise or God’s Pleasure or God’s presence? Only the believer can give the answer. We must be aware that choosing a target should be supported by the deeds of the believer in his daily life. It was also mentioned previously that, whatever the reward the believer is heading for, there is no guarantee that it will be realized. It is my feeling that there should not be any expectation on behalf of the believer to receive something in exchange for his worship. Such an expectation would bring such a divine act down to the level of simple trading. In that context, one has to remember the acts of Jesus in the court yard of The Jewish Temple. The act of worshipping without any expectation is resumed in the teachings of Jesus,
(Luke’s Gospel) 17-10 “It is the same with you ; when you have done all you have been told to do, say, ‘we are ordinary servants; we have only done our duty.’”
It is my personal observation, that most people throughout the world, accept the rituals as the same as the term “worship” and they perform the rituals automatically, because this was put into their minds when they were children. On the other hand, a person, after reaching maturity, I think, should start to perform the rituals with consciousness. The offsprings of Adam are not robots. They are given the mental faculties which enable them to think. The Qur’an, as we shall see in later chapters, advises us to Think. The very first question a believer asks may go like this; ‘Does The Creator of universe(s) really need the timely rituals I perform or rather those timely rituals are only the way to put the pavement towards a more sophisticated, more spiritual way of life’? Then, we may expect our eyes to be opened to some of the truth given in the “Holy Message”. This, in return, I believe will increase our faith, which, will allow us to fulfill our duties as the servants of God. This spiral may be an instrument in order that we may progress spiritually. Isn’t this the utmost aim of religious teaching? In the previous chapter it was mentioned that the faith of the believers may change from person to person and may even increase in time, (Matthew’s Gospel 17-20 ; Qur’an 8-2; 48-4; 5-93;…). Why is an increase in the persons’ faith so important? I believe because it affects ones behaviour in ones daily life as we see in the following verse,
(Qur’an) 64-16 Heed God within your limitations; listen and obey and spend in charity, which is beter for your ownselves. Those who resist to their own greed will be the successful ones
Will anyone share with those in need, willingly? I doubt it very much, unless one is a true believer, the one who is depicted in The Qur’an, as one who has faith going into his heart. Such a person, I feel, will not see people as “Others.” If the world is filled with such faith we truly may expect peace in the world,
(Qur’an) 21-105 We have written in the Psalms following the Torah; "My peace loving (peace making) servants shall inherit the earth."
Why do people worship God? A difficult question to answer. Perhaps it is a necessary part of our “Being” as it was stated in the first verse of this chapter,
(Qur’an) 51-56 I have only created sprites and men so they may worship Me;
The word ‘worship’ should not be understood to mean observation of rituals at certain times of the day or of the year. In the Turkish translations of The Qur’an, another meaning of that word is given, meaning ‘serving only to God’. In that context, reminding ourselves of certains verses of The Qur’an may put some light on the issue,
(Qur’an) 3-17 The servants of God are the patient ones, loyal and steadfast, who spend in charity and seek forgiveness before dawn each morning.
(Qur’an) 4-36 Be slaves to God; Worship God Alone and do not associate anything with Him. Show kindness to both your parents and near relatives, orphans, the needy, the neighbor who is a relative to you or a stranger, and your companion by your side and the wayfarer, and anyone else under your control. God does not love someone who is conceited, boastful,
(Qur’an) 25-63,64,67,68 The slaves of Most Beneficient walk modestly on earth and whenever ignorant men address them they reply with words of gentleness
And the spend the night before their Lord, standing and prostrating.
And they are the ones, when they spend, they are neither extravagant nor niggardly, but do it in moderation.
And those do not invoke any other god along with the Most Beneficient, and do not kill as God has forbidden it, except for a just cause and do not commit illegal sexual intercourse; and whoever does these, shall receive the punishment.
These last verses indicate that the measure of being a servant to God is the way a person lives in the community. The way of life described for the slaves of God in these verses is another way of picturing a civilized community where technological development is not mentioned. In such a civilized community the human being should not be exploited by his fellows or by the community or by any institutions created by the humans themselves. Human beings are placed in the center of everything and their happiness and their well being is the essential issue. If we pay attention to the verses above we may understand that the servants of God are those who serve other human beings in every possible way. The one to be given help is a human being and should be given aid without any discrimination based on language, colour, race, faith or nationality. Because the Source of The Message does not allow any kind of discrimination. These verses summarize the way God’s servants should govern their lives in the community. Now it is time that, the followers of Torah who think they are the ‘selected ones; and those who claim that they reach salvation because they are Christians, and those who think that only they will go to heaven because they are Muslims, should ask a simple question; How many of the deeds mentioned in theses verses, I am fulfilling? I feel that the number of people who could answer that question affirmative amongst the people of the followers of The Torah or The Gospels or The Qur’an is probably negligible. Looking at the verses of all three books that were mentioned, one may be able to draw the conclusion that the human being is at the center of ‘the teachings of religion’ which was actually strongly expressed in the best possible way in the following words of Yunus Emre, one of the most celebrated scholars of Anatolia, who lived centuries ago,
“If you even once broke the heart of a human being all your past prayers have been wasted”
It was mentioned above that being a follower of a book and even performing the timely rituals may not necessarily be the way for salvation. This fact is briefly underlined in the following verse of The Qur’an,
(Qur’an)26-89 Except those who come to God with a clean heart are the successful ones"
Is anything mentioned with regard to the timely rituals and being a follower of the institutionalized religion, in the verse given above? Religion has been understood and practiced by the believers for centuries in the way that was forced upon them by the institutions. Did that way of practicing the religion help the believers to have a purified heart? I doubt it very much. Actually the significance of the word heart within true purification of oneself has been stressed in the Gospel teaching, perhaps even by disregarding of the rituals;
(N.T. Mark) 7-15 “There is nothing that goes into a person from the outside which can make him ritually unclean. Rather, it is what comes out of a person that makes him unclean”
(N.T. Mark) 7-21,22,23 For from the inside, from a person’s heart, come the evil ideas which lead him to do immoral things, to rob, kill,
commit adultry, be greedy, and do all sorts of evil things; deceit, indecency, jealousy, slander, pride, and folly-
all these evil things come from inside a person and make him unclean.
We have been reminded that worshipping The Creator is not restricted only to human beings (Qur’an 51-56). Some other Qur’an verses show us that worshipping exists beyond our three dimensional material universe too,
(Qur’an) 21-19 He owns whoever is in Heaven and Earth. Anyone who is at His Presence is never too proud to do Him service, nor are they even wearied;
(Qur’an) 7-206 Those who are at your Lord’s Presence do not feel too proud to worship Him; they glorify Him and drop down on their knees before Him.
If true worship on earth is something more than the performance of the timely rituals, only God knows how those at His Presence prostrate. To grasp this is not easy for the human mind which has a restricted conception, because its faculties are limited within the five senses in a three dimensional space. Certainly I cannot stop my self from asking this question; Is all this teaching of religion just a method to mature us to the level of consciousness so that we may be able to prostrate at His Presence? To learn how we can achieve that spiritual level, we must remember a verse from The Qur’an,
(Qur’an)3-55 Remember when God said: "Jesus, I shall take your life and raise you to Myself and clear you of those who disbelieve and I will purify you and place those who follow you ahead of those who disbelieve until Resurrection Day.
It is not clear in this last verse when Jesus was going to be purified although the followers of Jesus may not be ready to accept that idea of Him being purified. Nevertheless this verse, and some others given below, give us some idea concerning the purification of the human beings,
(Qur’an) 24-21 … If it had not been for God's bounty and mercy towards you, not one of you would have ever been pure from sins; but God purifies anyone He wishes
(Qur’an)24-30 Tell believers to lower their glances and to guard their private parts; that will be a help for their purification …
In addition to these verses there are so many others in The Qur’an (62-2)(8-1,2,3)(72-1,2,4,5) that tell us that purification should be our aim during our life on earth. The same idea was also stressed according to the Gospel, when John the Baptist was talking to his followers,
(Matthew’s Gospel) 3-11 I baptize you with water to show that you have repented, but the one who will come after me will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and Fire…
This Gospel verse deserves much deliberation by human beings if we are sincere in our belief and, if it is our desire to purify ourselves…Nevertheless within the limitations of our human mind one may notice that what John was doing was simply similar to the ritual cleaning of the Israelites and with his words it was a way of confirmation that the person who repented of his sins of the past. In a way this performance of John, in the simplest way, shows us the path for cleaning ourselves from the sins of this world. The verse also talks about the One, who comes after John, who was to baptize people with the Holy Spirit and fire. This verse in other words is a simple example of the two sides of the religion with regard to the aim of the rituals. On one side there is ritual cleaning of the body of a human being while on the other side the cleaning of the persons’ soul. Since human beings’ belief and conception of God has refined in time so did the their cleansing. At first they worshipped the Gods that they made by their own hands. According to the Holy Books, although we do not have enough knowledge about the beliefs and the way God’s Messengers acted in the past to call their people to worship a God who had created them, we are better furnished with knowledge starting with Moses as God’s messenger, the people were required to worship a God unseen to human beings. Even then the people, the Israelites; were forced to be aware of the unseen God through some extraordinary physical events, like to see a ‘burning fire without a smoke’ or ‘a cloud’ going in front of them to lead them when they were running away from being slaughtered by the Pharaoh’s men, or some natural disasters in Egypt before the Israelites started the ‘Exodus’ and so on…The Israelites were given The Law to govern their daily activities as well as the rituals. The Law is basically concentrated on sins, in other words things that the followers of TheTorah should not do and the rituals the people should do to cleanse themselves ritually; in other words everything appeals to the human senses. The other prophets of the Israelites who came after Moses, strengthened the teachings of Moses. At a later date, then Jesus started his teachings and according to the officially accepted texts of Gospels Jesus confirmed the previous Scriptures and at the same time he tried to concentrate more on the spiritual aspects of the teachings of religion. This idea probably was well understood and also expressed later by Peter too,
(N.T. 1 Peter) 2-1,2 Rid yourselves, then, of all evil, no more lying or hypocrisy or jealousy or insulting language
Be like newborn babies, always thirsty for the spiritual milk
According to the Holy Books, the angels play an important role in the execution of the Holy plan. But the idea generally accepted by the public concerning the angels was invalidated in The Qur’an,
(Qur’an) 43-19 They even regard the angels who are the servants of the Most Beneficient as females! Were they present at their creation? Their testimony will be recorded and they will be questioned about it.
Let us remember a verse from The Qur’an with regard to the angels, the slaves of The Most Beneficient,
(Qur’an) 17-61 Remember, when We told the angels: "Prostrate before Adam” They all prostrated except Satan. …
The messengers who were sent to mankind proclaimed that human beings should worship only the Most Beneficent. It is amazing that Adam who is believed to be the forefather of the human race, and the first one created, the angels are required to prostrate unto. The Creator, on the other hand as we are aware of, rejects having any partners. So, one begins to wonder, Who is Adam? This requires much thought, and to do that, we have to remember some of the Qur’an verses such as (Qur’an 2-31,32,33) which have already been mentioned in the Creation part of this book. One day we may be allowed to know the full meaning of that Qur’an verse (17-61). Indeed, within this context, there is a clear and definite promise to mankind that more knowledge will be provided to earth people in the future concerning everything according to the following verse,
(Qur’an) 7-7 We shall narrate unto them the whole story with knowledge, and indeed We were aware of everything
Whoever will receive ‘the whole story with knowledge’ are the lucky ones, since receiving the story with knowledge, to my understanding; means that everything will be explained with reasoning but not with parables which quite often is the method used in the Gospels to teach the masses. Certainly when the teaching is conveyed to the human race with knowledge one can be sure that the veil of the truth is lifted. One may be able to see the signs of that truth in some of the Qur’an verses ( e.g. Qur’an 6-108).
It is a well-known fact that prayer is an essential part of worship. The Qur’an states that those, who ask to be pardoned during the quietness of the night and early hours of the day will be admired. Certainly with a devotion to God (Qur’an 3-17). The importance of such a prayer is further emphasized in the following verse,
(Qur’an) 40-60 Your Lord has said: "Pray to Me; I shall respond to you. The ones who are too proud to worship Me will enter Hell in humiliation."
This verse gives us the good news that if the created one asks, provided that he is aware of the fact that he is The Created One, he will receive the necessary response. We see similar good news in the Gospels too,
(Luke’s Gospel) 11-9 “And so I say to you: Ask, and you will receive; seek, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you.”
One may be inclined to wonder what a believer may ask from The Creator: Is İt something related to our earthly desires or is it something spiritual? I believe one can find the answer in the teachings of Jesus,
(Luke’s Gospel) 12-22 Then Jesus said to the disciples, “And so I tell you not to worry about the food you need to stay alive or about the clothes you need for your body.”
(Luke’s Gospel) 12-29,30,31 “ So don’t be all upset, always concerned about what you will eat and drink.
(For the pagans of this world are always concerned about all these things.) Your Father knows that you need all these things.
Instead, be concerned with His Kingdom, and He will provide you with these things.”
Looking at these verses of the Gospel and remembering the deeds carried out by the wealthy Western countries in order to increase their wealth further, one wonders, do not the followers of the teachings of Jesus read The Gospels or have not they understood the message? Since deeds are important, how can they claim that, believing in Jesus is sufficient for the salvation of their soul. Believing in Jesus means living as Jesus did or at least reflecting the teachings of Jesus into one’s daily life. Such a performance could only be possible if the faith has gone into the heart of the believer (Qur’an 49-14)…
Since we, human beings were made of flesh and blood and we have been living in a material world it may be better to find a happy medium. It is natural that a person should work to improve his living standards, but at the same time he has to remember the hereafter. This way of life I feel, if made the basics of our life on earth it may lead to a happy life for everyone. We have learned from the teachings of The Qur’an that we are all instruments for each other. The Qur’an informs us that some of us are given of the worldly wealth, more than the others. This inequality again, is one of the ways of tests that the human beings may face. Also in this particular case, we are faced with the act of “Sharing.” In those countries where the majority of the people follow The Qur’an, alms of fixed quantities are given on certain days of the year and the amount of alms are determined by the religious authority for every occasion. I do not believe The Qur’an describes any detail to confirm the way that giving alms has been practiced in the countries where people follow The Qur’an. Giving should be carried out any day and with no fixed amount. Probably the way giving has been in practice, may be to introduce people to the idea of sharing even at the lowest possible levels. Sharing was pointed out in some verses above, (Qur’an 3-17; 25-67) and we may add the following verses besides so many others to show the importance given to ‘sharing’ in the Qur’an
(Qur’an) 8-2,3 Believers are merely those whose hearts feel wary whenever God is mentioned and whose faith increases when His verses are recited to them. On their Lord do they rely
Those who keep up prayer with perfection and share whatever We have provided them with
(Qur’an) 57-7 Believe in God and His messenger, and spend plentyful out of whatever God has allowed you to control. Those of you who believe and spend on charity will have an even larger fee.
(Qur’an)16-71 God has favored some of you over others in livelyhood. . Why do not those who are provided more hand over some of their earnings to their slaves, so that they may be equal with them. Do they then deny the Favour of God?
(Qur’an) 3-133,134 Hasten towards forgiveness from your Lord and a garden broader than Heaven and Earth which has been prepared for those pious ones.
The pious ones spend for charity in prosperity as well as in poverty …
There is no fixed amounts in sharing according to the Qur’an. Giving alms which has been the practice amongst the followers of the Qur’an, is only a symbolic way of sharing. Especially during the present times, those who wish to give, may give to other people or educate students in need or if possible help with the construction of schools, hospitals, boarding houses for children without parents and for elderly people in need and various like institutions. According to the author’s opinion, the teachings of religion has always placed the human being at the center of everything. The aim of the teachings of religion is not , and cannot be limited, as some “believers” tend to believe, as ‘the preparation of the human being for the hereafter by performance of the timely rituals only’. We must add to that, the formation of a happy community with enlightened individuals. At the present time children are educated in schools and in these schools the education given to children should not be bounded only with technological knowledge; they should be educated in a way that which makes them aware of the fact that they themselves, as well as everybody else, irrespective of their colour, language and ethnicity are all human beings, and that the whole human race shares the same land and a common future. In countries where most people are the followers of the Qur’an, in the month of Ramadan, now and then, persons arrange a meal to break the fast which is arranged like a feast and it is made sure to be known by the masses through wide publicity and the invitees to that feast are mostly well-off individuals. Is arranging such a feast in accordance with the teachings of religion? I doubt it very much! At this point, I believe it is necessary to remember a verse from the teachings of Jesus, to underline the essence of giving,
(Luke’s Gospel) 14-13,14 “When you give a feast, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind;
And you will be blessed, because they are not able to pay you back. God will repay you on the day the good people rise from death.”
In countries where the majority of people follow The Qur’an, certain rituals have been accepted as the significant elements within the framework of Worship. One may mention the daily prayers, fasting, the pilgrimage to Mecca, sacrificing and giving alms. Daily prayers have been given the most importance by the followers of The Qur’an. According to the accepted practice they are performed five times a day and at certain times of the day. On the other hand, some scholars of the Qur’an, like Ateş, argue that the daily prayers should be performed less that five times a day. The times of the daily prayers were described roughly in the Qur’an, but through the technological developments and with the discovery of the clock, those daily prayers have been performed by the believers at specific times of the day, which have been determined by the members of the clergy. The Qur’an, except the Friday Prayer, does not dictate that the daily prayers should be performed with a mass in a mosque under the leadership of an officially appointed cleric (imam). Indeed, neither The Qur’an, nor the teachings of the Gospels describe a profile of clerical people and a clerical hierarchy. During the times of prophet Muhammad, the most knowledgeable person in the congragation of that particular prayer time was supposed to have led the daily prayer in the mosque.
According to the Qur’an, it appears that the daily rituals were also advised to the previous messengers who had proclaimed the Holy Message centuries before Muhammad,
(Qur’an) 14-35,40 Remember what Abraham once said:”My Lord, secure this land. Keep me and my sons away from becoming servants of idols.
"My Lord, make me continue with prayer, and have my offspring do so too. "Our Lord, accept my appeal!
One of the following verses(20-14) is about Moses while the other (19-31) is about Jesus,
(Qur’an) 20-14 I am God Alone! There is no deity except Myself, so serve Me and keep up daily prayers for My Remembrance
(Qur’an) 19-31 “God has made me blessed and bounteous wherever I may be, and advised me to keep up my prayers and share whatever I have so long as I live;
In our times, the followers of The Qur’an perform certain acts, such as bowing, prostrating while reciting certain verses from The Qur’an during their daily prayers. The acts of bowing and prostrating were mentioned in the Qur’an without any details like the duration of each of the daily prayers and which verses were to be recited and when during the act of the prayer.
According to the Qur’an verses given above the messengers previous to Muhammad were asked to perform daily prayers We have no information regarding the way the previous messengers performed their daily prayers. But that is of little importance. The most important thing is to remember The Creator. On the other hand, we understand from The Qur’an, that even during the times of Abraham people were already visiting the Sacred House (Kabba) in Mecca,
(Qur’an) 2-125 Remember the time when We set up the House (the Ka’bah in Mecca) as a resort for mankind … We entrusted Abraham and Ishmael with cleaning out My house for those who circumambulate around it and are secluded in praying there, and who bow down on their knees in worship.
The acts of bowing and prostrating during the daily prayers required of the followers of the Qur’an are the acts of respect and expressions of a person who is nullyfying himself in the presence of the utmost authority, The Creator. I would like to ask this question- How many followers of The Qur’an have this extreme feeling when they are performing their daily prayers? Only God knows the answer. The followers of The Qur’an are required to observe ritual cleaning before beginning the daily prayers. This ritual cleaning brings to one’s mind the ritual cleaning required of the Israelite priests before they approached God’s Presence as described in The Old Testament. That ritual cleaning described in detail in The Old Testament and the ritual cleaning acts described in The Qur’an, seem to be symbolic, reminding us of the necessity of purification for the believers before they can approach their utmost goal, i.e. God’s Presence. That kind of purification is certainly different than the ritual cleaning which is the one that the believers should bear in mind to achieve. That kind of purification seems to be the purification of the soul but not our earthly body which we need while we are learning in this school, called the earth. The spiritual purification required of the people is given in The Qur’an and also very briefly in the Gospels.
(Qur’an) 91-9 Anyone who purifies himself has indeed achieved a great succes.
As John The Baptist said to his followers,
(Matthew’s Gospel) 3-13 “I baptize you with water to show you that you have repented, but the one who will come after me will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.”
It is understood that baptism by John was a symbolic purification. Spiritual cleansing appears to be essential when we think of purification. Indeed, the followers of The Qur’an have been practicing ritual cleansing for centuries, but in most cases without achieving the result required by The Qur’an
It appears that the followers of the Holy Books failed to understand the essence of the Holy message. In the past with the exception of a handful of people the rest of the believers have not been able to separate the metal from the slag. Farmers have benefited from the wind to separate the grain from the chuff. Why have the rituals become the essence in the teaching and practicing of religion throughout the centuries? The answer rests on the members of the clergy past and present.
(N.T. Mark) 8,9 “You put aside God’s command and obey the teachings of men.”
And Jesus continued, “You have a clever way of rejecting God’s Law in order to uphold your own teaching.”
The teachings of religion are important for mankind and the believers should try to understand the symbolism in the teaching, only then may the true believers be able to find the Right Path, the one which may eventually lead the believers to their most desired destiny.
We have learned from The Old Testament that the priests who had consumed alcohol, were forbidden to enter God’s presence,
(O.T. Leviticus) 10-8,9 The Lord said to Aaron,
“You and your sons are not to enter the Tent of my presence after drinking wine or beer; if you do you will die. This is a law to be kept by all your descendants.”
As mentioned above, the daily prayers of the believers of The Qur’an should be given the utmost respect, as if they are being performed at the presence of God. However, The Qur’an has a more lenient approach concerning the performance of the rituals if a believer has taken any alcohol,
(Qur’an) 4-43 You who believe, do not attempt to pray while you are drunk, until you know what you are saying; …
This approach shows some difference than that presented in The Old Testament in relation to alcohol consuming. Is it a difference which violates the continuity and the unity of the teachings of religion? We have to remember some other verses,
(O.T. Exodus) 3-4,5 When the LORD saw Moses was coming closer, he called to him from the middle of the bush and said, “Moses! Moses!” He answered, “Yes, here I am.”
God said, “Do not come any closer. Take off your sandals, because you are standing on the holy ground
(Qur’an) 20-11,12 When Moses came close to the fire, he was called with the name,
“Moses, I am your Lord! Take off your sandals; you are in the sacred valley of Tuwa”
The act of removing the shoes by the believers when they enter the building where they worship their Lord is still obeyed for instance in mosques, and some churches. This shows us that these places where God’s name had been recited have been looked upon as holy places. Therefore the different approach of the Old Testament and The Qur’an with regard to people taking alcohol before they enter the buildings where they worship may be due to the fact that the message was given according to the awareness of the community at that time.
That Qur’an verse (4-43) also puts some light on the essence of the rituals, telling us that the believers who are reciting the verses from The Qur’an must know the meaning of what is being said. Certainly, this brings up the question of - How many believers of The Qur’an, with the exception of those who speak Arabic, understand the meaning of the verses that they are reciting during their prayers. Apart from the scholars, probably only a few. One also wonders if this is the reason for the present state of the underdevelopment of those who are the followers of The Qur’an, that they perform their prayers without understanding the message? The answer will be found by the people themselves, provided that freedom of thought and speech is granted and the bonds between the believers and the religious idols, which have been imposed on them since their childhood, are broken. The reason for the estabilishment of the daily prayers required of the followers of The Qur’an was clearly expressed as to “remember The Creator” (Qur’an 20-4). If a believer of The Qur’an wishes to understand the meaning of what he is saying during the daily prayers, to follow one of the alternative ways stated below may bring a solution to the problem,
1- To learn the meaning of the verses in one’s own language and recite them in Arabic,
2- To recite the verses in one’s mother tongue,
3- To develop a way acceptable to one’s conscience e.g. reciting one of the names of The Creator.
Another ritual widely practiced in those countries where majority of the people follow The Qur’an, is the sacrifice of animals. We understand from The Old Testament and The Qur’an that this ritual started with Abraham, who was told to sacrifice his son Isaac, in order to fulfill his promise to his Lord. However, his Lord, according to the story given in The Old Testament and The Qur’an, sent him a ram in place of his son.
The details given to Israelites pertaining to the sacrificing of animals can be found in the books Exodus and Levites in the Old Testament. However, in the Gospels, animal sacrifice was not advised, with one exception when Jesus advised a man, whom Jesus had cured of a skin disease, to go and give sacrifice,
(Matthew’s Gospel) 8-4 Then Jesus said to him, “Listen! Don’t tell anyone, but go straight to the priest and let him examine you; then in order to prove to everyone that you are cured, offer the sacrifice that Moses ordered.”
This Gospel verse is actually strengthens the idea put forward all the way from the beginning of this book, that the teaching of religion is continuous and none of the messengers contradict the message of those who came before. According to Christian Doctrine, Jesus came to earth to be sacrificed for mankind to be cleansed of their sins. This, the author believes, is not in line with the idea that belief pertains to the individual and also the author believes that universal justice does not hold any individual responsible for the actions of those who came before.
Also according to The Qur’an, the subject of animal sacrifice appears to be part of the ritual of Pilgrimage,
(Qur’an) 22-27,28,29 Proclaim the Pilgrimage to mankind: let them come to you on foot and or on every lean beast tired of the Journey;
to bear witness to the advantages they have, and to mention God's name on appointed days over the livestock He has provided them with. "So eat some of it and feed the depressed needy.
Then let them attend to their grooming, fulfill their vows, and circumambulate the Ancient House (Kaaba) ."
It seems that the idea of the pilgrimage was to see the Prophet Muhammad and perform various rituals of which sacrifice was only one part. It is clear that the animal sacrifice is a part of the rituals required of those who visit Mecca for pilgrimage. Therefore, it is impossible to understand why the followers of The Qur’an sacrifice animals in their own countries during the days of pilgrimage performed by followers of The Qur’an in Mecca. At this point It may be rather interesting to remember some other verses from The Qur’an concerning animal sacrifice,
(Qur’an)22-36,37 Animals' bodies [to be sacrificed] We have granted to you as some of God's symbols.
Neither their meat nor their blood ever reaches God, but your piety does reach Him. Thus He has subjected them to you, so that you may magnify God because He has guided you, and proclaim good news to those who act peacefully.
Another verse from The Qur’an which mentions the Pilgrimage, animal sacrifice and fasting should be remembered in conjunction with the verses given above,
(Qur’an) 5-97 God has placed the Kaaba as the Hallowed House, as well as the Hallowed Month and the offerings as a support and a reliance for mankind; that is so you may know that God knows whatever is in Heaven and whatever is on Earth, and that God is Aware of everything.
With regard to the ritual of sacrifice it will be interesting to remember a Qur’an verse which reminds us of what Moses said to the Israelites,
(Qur’an) 2-54 Remember, when Moses told his people: "My people, you have wronged yourselves by worshipping the Calf. So turn towards your Maker in repentance and kill your ego; that will be better for you with your Maker. He will then relent towards you, since He is the Relenting, the Merciful."
The believers should read the verses given above and think about them regarding the ritual of sacrifice. One wonders which one is easier to sacrifice, an animal or one’s ego? The author is of the opinion that killing one’s ego for a human being is one of the most difficult acts. Disregarding the man-made rituals, even those advised to the believers in the Holy Books were probably introduced by the source with an aim. We can see this fact if we human beings read the verses mentioned, which are related to the rituals, with a pure intention to understand the reasons behind them . Then, what was the reason for the rituals advised to the believers? Perhaps the reason for introducing all those physical rituals was to prepare us for spiritual worship? The Qur’an reminds us that every created being performs their worship in their own ways (Qur’an 22-18). We perhaps have to try to break the boundaries forced on us by society starting from childhood and continueing until the end of our lives on earth. To remember the fact, that we human beings have been limited by our five senses, may help us when we start reasoning the ways that religion has been practiced in different societies of the world. By doing so, we may begin to understand the meaning of the creation, and the aim of the teachings of religion. Achieving this awareness may only be possible if every believer reads the Book they follow, with genuine interest and endeavour to understand it (Luke’s Gospel 11-9). If this is done, then there is hope that the followers of any of the holy books may be able to understand the following verse,
(Qur’an) 22-67 Each nation have We ordained rituals they are devoted to, so do not let anyone argue with you about the matter.
It is apparent that according to the previous Qur’an verse that only the ceremonies ordained for the followers of the different holy books to observe, are not similar, but they are all the ceremonies of the same and the One religion. Certainly the message of this verse will reach irs target only if the followers of the different holy books reach the consciousness that the message given to mankind, though by different messengers, came from the same Source. If we come back to the rituals which most of the followers of different holy books consider as the religion itself; as mentioned before, the rituals should be performed with awareness. Otherwise, every ritual performed by the followers of different messengers is bound to stay on the surface. This idea is stressed in all the Holy Books,
(Qur’an)107-4,5,6,7 It will be too bad for the performers of prayers
who are unaware of their prayers
who aim to be noticed as prayers
while they obstruct contributions for sharing
Do we not all recognize the people described in these verses whichever book they follow? We may notice a similar approach in the other holy books as well,
(N.T. Romans) 3-28 For we conclude that a person is put right with God only through faith, and not by doing what the Law commands.
(N.T. Matthew’s Gospel) 12-6,7 I tell you that there is something here greater than the Temple.
The scripture says, ‘ It is kindness that I want, not animal sacrifices.’ If you really know what this means, you would not condemn people who are not guilty.
(N.T. John’s Gospel) 4-23 But the time is coming and is already here, when by the power of God’s Spirit people will worship the Father as he really is, offering him the true worship that he wants.
What is the meaning of the “true worship” that Jesus mentioned? How about the worship which was performed by people for centuries especially that which was performed by the Israelites? Within this context, it may be interesting to remember what is said in The New Testament,
(N.T. Acts) 17-24,25 God, who made the world and everything in it, is Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in man made temples
Nor does he need anything that we can supply by working for him, since it is he himself who gives life and breath and everything else to everyone.
I wonder if it is only a purified heart that we can offer to the Creator, as it is mentioned in a verse (Qur’an 26-89). According to both The New Testament and The Qur’an, the Israelites assume that they are the ones who will reach salvation. There is an interesting reply to this assumption in The New Testament,
(N.T. Romans) 2-28,29 After all, who is a real Jew, truly circumcised? It is not the man who is a Jew on the outside, whose circumcision is a physical thing.
Rather, the real Jew is the person who is a Jew on the inside, that is, whose heart has been circumcised, and this is the work of God’s Spirit, not of the written Law. Such a person receives his praise from God, not from man.
The uneasy feeling we have noticed in The New Testament and in The Qur’an against the way the rituals have been performed by the masses may also be observed in The Old Testament too; and in the following verses are given as a few examples of so many,
(O.T. Isaiah) 29-13 The Lord said, “These people claim to worship me, but their words are meaningless, and their hearts are somewhere else. Their religion is nothing but human rules and traditions, which they have simply memorized.”
(O.T. Isaiah) 58-6,7 “The kind of fasting I want is this: Remove the chains of oppression and the yoke of injustice, and let the oppressed go free.
Share your food with the hungry and open your homes to the homeless poor. Give clothes to those who have nothing to wear, and do not refuse to help your own relatives.”
(O.T. Jeremiah) 9-25,26 The Lord says, ” The time is coming when I will punish the people of Egypt, Judah, Edom, Ammon, Moab, and the desert people, who have their hair cut short.
All these people are circumcised, but have not kept the covenant it symbolizes. None of these people and none of the people of Israel have kept my covenant.”
(O.T. Hosea) 8-11 The more altars the people of Israel build for removing sin, the more places they have for sinning!
(O.T. Amos) 5-21,22,23,24, The LORD says, “I hate your religious festivals; I cannot stand them!
When you bring me burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will not accept them; I will not accept the animals you have fattened to bring me as offerings.
Stop your noisy songs; I do not want to listen to your harps.
Instead, let justice flow like a stream, and righteousness like a river that never goes dry.
It may be useful for us to focus on the verses given above and start reasoning, as suggested by The Qur’an, with an aim to understand their meaning. It appears that mankind has not changed much in the past three thousand years. Mankind still could not manage to get to the core of the message given in the Holy Books, instead is still playing on the colorful surface on which they painted themselves. The Holy Message has been given to the human beings and the messengers conveyed the message to mankind, some of them even lost their lives in this service to the human race. Instead of blindly following the interpretations presented to them by the members of the clergy, the people should try to understand the meaning of the Message themselves and try to offer the true worship requıred by God. The first step towards this aim might be to clear the man made rules as presented to us by the religious hierarchy in different parts of the world as the religion itself. The second step to follow, might be to reason the rituals advised to the followers of any of the books, which may bring us to the understanding that human beings are right at the center of the teachings of religion. If we manage to put the Law given in the Holy Books on the side, then what is left is The Creator and the created one. The Law makes religion communal and with the additions of the human beings, so called term ‘religions’ comes wrongly on our agenda. So we have to ask ourselves where is ‘faith’? which is the most essential part of the teachings of religion. Unfortunately, since religion has been moulded into some kind of a communal activity with so many rules and regulations, the essence of the teaching of religion has been lost, and the tie between the heart of the believer and the Source is slackened. The author strongly believes, that divine knowledge cannot be under the control of any kind of earthly hierarchy, and for the human beings, as it is the outmost aim to reach the Source as close as possible within our personal capacity, may only be possible if we work for it with a pure heart and wisdom to allow us to clear the slag from the metal.
GOAL
With regard to the goal shown to the created ones, to be focused by the faithful ones according to the teachings of Gospels, we may remember the following verses;
(N.T. Matthew) 5-44,45 But now I tell you: love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,
so that you may become the sons of your Father in heaven. …
(N.T. Matthew) 5-48 “You must be perfect- just as your Father in heaven is perfect.”
These Gospel verses show the human beings extraordinary targets to strive for. If we remember what Jesus was saying ‘Father in Heaven’ every so often, he may be talking about a dimension that he himself might have acquired. He then continues saying that ‘the believers must be perfect like their Father in Heaven’. Whichever human being, if one becomes perfect without any fault, then what that person will be called? At the same time, we do not yet have the knowledge of how to be perfect .
Now, If we look at the Qur’an verses which deal with the goal shown to the believers, seem to be modest, and also instructive and some examples of which were briefly mentioned in the previous chapters. Let us remember some of the verses related to this issue from The Qur’an,
(Qur’an) 11-6 No living creature exists on earth unless God provides for it. He knows its permanent dwelling place and its burrow temporary residing place; …
(Qur’an) 6-98 It is He Who has reproduced you from a single living being, and granted you a temporary place and a permanent residence. …
Both of the verses probably point out that the world, and therefore life on earth is transitory, while mentioning another dimension as the place for permanent residence for the created ones. This fact was beautifully expressed by the celebrated Turkish Minstrel, Asık Veysel,
“Residing in a caravansary with two gates; day and night, I am going on my path.”
According to Veysel, the world and the time spent on it is like spending a short while in a caravansary with two doors, birth is one of the gates, while the death of the biologic body is the second gate. With this saying, Veysel also underlines the fact that the possession of the earth does not actually belong to the human beings even if the human beings own the man made buildings, but the earth should be considered as a material sphere which was designed as a school for humans to benefit from it for the sustaining of their lives on earth.
There are a number of verses which one can recite from The Qur’an in relation to the permanent residence which was mentioned in the verses above,
(Qur’an) 10-56 It is He Who gives life and brings about death, and to Him you all return.
(Qur’an) 24-42 God holds control over the Heavens and Earth; to God lies the goal!
(Qur’an) 40-3 …There is no deity except Him; towards God lies the goal.
(Qur’an)40-3 Forgiving sin and Receiving Repentance, Stern in punishment, Wielder of Influence. There is no deity except Him; towards Him lies the Goal.
(Qur’an) 2-46 They are the ones who think about meeting their Lord and they are certain that they will return to Him
(Qur’an) 7-29 … As He brought you into being, your return is to Him
(Qur’an) 6-108 Do not insult those whom they worship instead of God; lest they insult God wrongfully without realizing it. Thus we have made their action attractive to every nation; then their return will be to their Lord and He shall notify them about what they have been doing.
(Qur’an) 3-83 Do they seek something besides God's religion? while to Him submitted all creatures with conscience in the heavens and those on earth willingly or unwillingly; to Him will they all be returned.
The above verses give a clear indication that every being on earth and even those in heavens will return to their creator. One sincerely hopes that the saying in the Qur’an that ‘even those in heavens will return to their Lord’ will not shock the followers of the Qur’an; because amongst most of the followers of The Qur’an, the target is to reside in heaven after their biologic death has occurred. The general acceptance of that idea of residing in the heaven after biological death, probably stems from some of the verses of The Qur’an of which examples are given below, while the term heaven is sometimes used in the plural form,
(Qur’an) 9-72 God has promised believers, men or women, gardens through which rivers flow to live in for ever, …
(Qur’an) 55-46 Yet for anyone who fears from the presence of his Lord, there two heavens. …
(Qyr’an) 55-62 And besides those two, there two more heavens
The Qur’an, on the other hand, points out to the believers the existence of another target to be desired,
(Qur’an) 50-35 In heaven they will have all that they desire, but We have more at Our Presence.
(Qur’an) 3-14 The love of passions that come from women and children has attracted mankind, as well as accumulated gold and silver treasures, … That means enjoyment during earthly life, while God’s Presence has the finest retreat.
(Qur’an) 28-70 He is God; there is no deity except Him! Praise belongs to Him from the very first to the last.. All the decree are His, and to Him will you (all) return.
The Qur’an also shows us that the target we are shown, for us is also a promise of The Creator,
(Qur’an) 10-4 To Him will you all return as a divine promise. …
It is apparent that the utmost goal of the human being should be God’s Presence. The verses given above seem to have been well understood centuries ago, and the desire to reach that goal was expressed and reminded to mankind by what Dervish Yunus said in the following words;
What is called Heaven is a mansion and a few houris,
Give them to ones who desire them, But all I need is You only.
How can an individual attain the utmost goal shown to mankind in The Qur’an? The answer to that question may be found in the verses of The Qur’an,
(Qur’an) 84-6 O man!,Indeed you will work very hard on the path to your Lord; but you will eventually succeed in your goal.
The last verse shows us all that an individual has to work hard on the path to his Lord. Can one succeed in achieving the Goal shown to him, in his life time on earth; or does he complete his training in some other material worlds or will he be given all the training he needs in the hereafter? We do not know , what we are aware of the fact that the individual has to be purified before he can be accepted in the dimension of God’s presence. Such achievement of an individual probably requires a significant transformation in a person and how it may be achieved one may find some clues in the following verses of the Qur’an and the Gospels,
(N.T.Matthew) 18-3,4 “I assure you that unless you change and become like children, you will never enter the Kingdom of Heaven.
The greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven is the one who humbles himself and becomes like this child.”
(Qur’an) 34-37 It is not your wealth nor your children that will bring you close to Us; only someone who believes and acts for peace. …
(Qur’an) 29-69 whoever strive for us we shall guide them along Our ways. God stands by those who act kindly!
(Qur’an) 5-35 You who believe, heed God and seek means to approach Him strive for His cause so that you may be successful.
(Qur’an) 73-19 This book is a reminder and directs one to reason: therefore anyone whoever wishes, may adopt a path to hisLord.
(Qur’an) 35-18 ... Anyone who purifies himself, only purifies his own soul. Towards God should lie one's goal.
(Qur’an) 91-9 Anyone who purifies himself will indeed succeed.
These verses clearly show us all the utmost goal which the believers may like to concentrate on during our life on earth. To achieve that target is called Salvation, in The Qur’an (verse 5-35). These verses underline the fact that salvation can be achieved by the individual alone and it is not communal. Salvation can be achieved by anyone. Being a member of a community formed by the followers of any of the Holy Books is not a prerequisite for a person to achieve salvation as is pointed out in the following verse,
(Qur’an) 3-73 …. SAY O Muhammad: "Right guidance means guidance from God. …All the bounty is in the hands of God; He grants it to whom He wishes. …
It is not possible to bluntly assume that there is a difference in the distribution of the bounties of The Creator to the created ones. What seems to be a difference is probably the result of the Holy Plan which I believe encompasses all the creation, not just the human race temporarily residing on earth.
With regard to achieving the target by the human beings, it might be necessary to remember a verse from The Qur’an, concerning the dialogue between Moses and his Lord. The same incident, was also mentioned in detail in the Book of Exodus in The Old Testament when Moses was addressed by his Lord through a bush, seemed to be in fire but not burning
(Qur’an) 20-12 Moses, I am your Lord! Take off your sandals; you are in the sacred valley of Tuwa.
Moses was asked to take off his sandals because he was about to enter the sacred valley, Tuwa. Based on the act of Moses we may be able to say that to reach the target shown to the human beings given in the previous verses must require cleansing of oneself since the path the human beings were required to take may eventually lead them to the presence of their Lord. The type of cleaning required of the human beings, should not be brought down to just cleaning of the body of the human beings like the cleaning rituals expressed in detail in The Old Testament and in The Qur’an. Probably those cleaning rituals are only symbolic to teach us that the true cleaning quite often mentioned in the verses of the holy books is the purification of our soul. It is easy to draw this conclusion from the verses of The Qur’an which were given above and also from the verses of The New Testament of which we have to remember the baptism of people by John The Baptist,
(Matthew’s Gospel) 3-11 I baptize with water to show that you have repented, but the one who will come after me will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire…
This verse, I feel, is instructive one and directs us to the heart of the subject that is the very essence and the aim of the teaching of religion. Baptism with water has been practiced by the followers of The New Testament for centuries, although we have no information from the existing Gospels whether Jesus actually baptized people with water.
An interpretation of baptism is given in first letter of Paul to Corinthians,
(N.T. 1Corinthians) 12-13 In the same way, all of us, whether Jews or Gentiles, whether slaves or free, have been baptized into the one body by the same Spirit, and we have all been given the one Spirit to drink.
The baptism that Paul is talking about is the cleansing of our souls by the Spirit which works in everyone without making any differentiation between individuals. Here, it is clear that being a follower of The New Testament is not a guarantee nor a prerequisite to be cleansed by the Spirit. If just going to the church every Sunday was sufficient to have our souls cleaned, then the world would have been a completely different place by now. On the other hand believing in the teachings of Jesus with our heart and trying to understand his message to mankind and reflecting it in our daily lives would have been a very big step forward towards purifying our souls.
The Qur’an, while underlining the significance of spiritual cleaning gives us some clues on how to clean our souls. Some examples are given below,
(Qur’an)24-30 Tell the believing men to avert their glances and to guard their private parts; that will help them for their purification
(Qur’an)62-2 He who has sent a messenger (Muhammad) from among the unlettered people themselves, reciting them the verses, cleaning them to purify them and teach them the Book and the wisdom. …
(Qur’an) 9-108 … It is more fitting for you to pray in a mosque which has been founded on piety from the first day of its foundation; There are men who desire to be purified. God loves those who purify themselves.
(Qur’an)33-32,33 O wives of the Prophet, you are not like any other women!
Remain in your homes and do no walk the way they used to during the time of Arabic Paganism. Keep up prayers and give alms, and obey God and His messenger. God merely wants to remove any blight from you since you are People of the Prophet's House, and to cleanse you thoroughly
These verses, indeed emphasize the necessity of spiritual cleaning and it is clear that performing the rituals is not enough for the person to achieve it. This is a fact which should be understood by the followers of any of the Holy Books. The believers should first of all have the desire to be purified and then try to read the book they follow with the intention to understand it. The rest, I believe, will be in God’s hands and whatever happens will be the best for that person. Certainly, the rituals required of the believers should not be overlooked. It is probable that those rituals might have been included in the Holy Books with an intention. Of those rituals,as an example, let us consider the ritual of fasting which is, according to The Qur’an, not taking into the mouth of any solid or liquid food stuff during certain hours of the day. This is simply fasting based on starvation. We shall see that there is another kind of fasting if we read a verse, from The Qur’an, when Virgin Mary was spoken to as she was about to give birth to Jesus,
(Qur’an) 19-25,26 Shake the trunk of the date palm towards you so it will drop some fresh dates on you
Eat and drink, and refresh yourself. Should you see even a single human being, then say: "I have vowed to keep a fast to the Mercy-giving whereby I'll never speak to any human being today!"
This type of fasting was named as A Fasting of Silence by some Turkish scholars like Öztürk and Ateş.
In our times, whether or not a person is fasting with starvation, controlling his words when he is communicating with others and trying not to hurt people, in my opinion is much more valuable than just fasting with a simple starvation. Indeed this behaviour was also stressed in the New Testament,
(N.T. James) 3-10 Words Of thanksgiving and cursing pour out from the same mouth. My brothers this should not happen.
(Matthew’s Gospel) 15-11 “It is not what goes into a person’s mouth that makes him ritually unclean; rather, what comes out of it makes him unclean.”
If one pursues this issue of fasting further, we may come to another step which tells us to control even our thoughts, and that way of life may be called Fasting in Thoughts. Certainly one can be sure of the fact that this way of fasting is definitely different than the type of fasting which requires not to eat or to drink during certain hours of the day and the type of fasting which requires the control of one’s thoughts may be called full time fasting by a believer. Such a step probably is a very big step taken on the path of purification. Controlling our thoughts was also strongly advised by Jesus too,
(N.T. Matthew) 4-27,28 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Do not commit adultery.’
But, now I tell you: anyone who looks at a woman and wants to possess her is committing adultery with her in his heart.
The Qur’an gives us the good news of a rather interesting reward for those who progressed on the path of purification,
(Qur’an 56-77,78,79 that is indeed a Noble Quran (Recital Book)
kept as a treasured Book
which none but the purified may touch
This verse clearly states that no one but the purified ones can touch The Qur’an. The generally accepted practice amongst the followers of The Qur’an was to perform an ablution before reading The Qur’an. This practice was probably due to the misinterpretation of this verse by the members of the clergy a long time ago. It is the authors opinion that this verse in no way is telling us that physically touching
The Qur’an by human hands, is not permissible without ritual purification. On the contrary, it is pointing to the fact that the understanding of the message, given in the Qur’an, according to the verse, may be possible only after spiritual purification of the individual. The message of the verse is not limited to understanding the message of The Qur’an only. It may be advisable to take it as a verity, that purification of the believer is essential for the person to comprehend the message given in the Holy Books because they are all conveyed from the same Source. In the past and even now, the masses accept the interpretation presented to them by the members of the clergy at any level of their man made hierarchy. Everyone can understand the message according to the level of awareness of the person and that which simply depends on the purification level that the person has attained. That interpretation which the person acquires will be the truth for that person. But is it the whole truth? Definitely not. We are human beings and we are proud of being given several faculties which enable us to run our life on earth, and to pursue the path which may eventually lead each of us to our destiny. Purification is probably a non ending process. While the purified ones begin to understand the meaning of the message which goes deep down to the heart of the person, then one expects the reflection of that understanding on the daily life of that person. Due to this, the behaviour of that person will improve with regard to the person’s relations with every entity in ones surroundings. This kind of life, I believe will purify the person further, which in return increases the awareness of that person. All this argument brings us back to the idea which was put forward from the beginning of this book, that the teachings of religion is for the individual. Therefore, everyone has to read the book that the person follows, otherwise, the person will accept what is given to him by the members of the clergy and information received in that way most likely will not help him to find the path to his Lord.
The Qur’an, when it was proclaimed in the seventh century, probably due to the wrong behaviour of the members of the clergy up to that time the following verse was given to prophet Muhammad,
(Qur’an) 9-34 O You who believe! Indeed, many Jewish rabbis and Christian monks do consume people's wealth to no good purpose and they obstruct God's way. Announce painful torment to those who hoard gold and silver and do not spend them in the Way of God.
In our times we can remove the words rabbis and priests and say that anyone who gains from the exploitation of the faith of the people, including the members of the clergy and the politicians throughout the world. The masses which follow the ways of the past without reasoning will end up in ditches, as Jesus plainly explained this fact a long time ago saying that ‘a blind can not lead the blinds’ (N.T. Matthew 15-14). We should all be aware of the fact that the teachings of religion should enlighten people; but this is only possible if the message in the Holy Books is understood and practiced on our daily life. Otherwise, the human race will be kept in darkness which was the case in the past and it still is.
As in all aspects of our life, with regard to the purification of human beings, while trying our best to acquire it we also have to remember the will of The Creator,
(Qur’an) 24-21 O You who believe! Do not follow in Satan's footsteps. …If it had not been for God's bounty and mercy towards you, not one of you would have ever been pure; but God purifies anyone He wishes. God is Alert, Aware.
PATH
It is stated in The Qur’an verse (29-2), that human beings, will not be left to their own devices from the time that they open their eyes to life on earth until the death of their biologic body. In addition to that, we are also shown a goal to work for us to be able to reach in the hereafter. As it was mentioned in the previous chapter, this goal may be heaven, or God’s presence according to a person’s conception, which seems to vary according to the level of spiritual awareness. Whichever goal is desired by the individual, the person should follow a path as humans do, to get somewhere in their daily life but this path is not a physical one. The Holy Books give us some clues with regard to that spiritual path, some examples of which are given below,
(Qur’an) 36-4,5 Along a Straight Path
with a revelation from the All Mighty, the Most Merciful.
This verse, although is addressed directly to Muhammad, the last prophet, human beings can see what needs to be done to follow the spiritual path, which, according to The Qur’an, is the one sent down by the Most Merciful. Certainly, we have to remember that both The Old Testament and The New Testament are also the revelations of the All Mighty. This fact and its relation to the path that a believer should take, is summarized in the verse (Qur’an 19-36) given below,
(Qur’an) 19-36 Without any doubt God is my Lord and your Lord, so worship Him Alone. This is the Straight Path to follow.
In another verse from The Qur’an, while the Satan is explaining his aim on earth, which he puts into words to divert people from the straight path, we also learn the essential character of worshipping the All Mighty.
(Qur’an) 15-39,40,41 Satan said: " I shall indeed make things on earth seem attractive to mankind; and I'll mislead them all
except for any of Your sincere servants who may be among them."
God said: "This is the Straight Path leading up to Me!
It is apparent that hypocrisy should not exist in the true worship to Most Merciful, so that human kind may be guided on the right path, the one which leads to our Lord. To strengthen this idea of true faith we may remind ourselves of a verse from the teachings of Jesus as a method to accept and practice in our daily life.
(Matthew’s Gospel) 22-37 Jesus answered, “Love the Lord your God with all your hearth, with all your soul, and with all your mind.”
It may be necessary to remember some of the ideas put forward in the previous chapter in relation to worshipping our Lord. Such that without even mentioning the man made rules, the rituals required to be performed by the believers, were said to be looked upon as something not to be fulfilled automatically. Human beings are not robots unless they themselves prefer to be one. It was understood that worshipping is not, and can not be just fulfilling the timely rituals. It is much more than that which should involve remembering our Creator every moment of our life. Such an involvement of the believer with his Creator requires faith which is not expressed in words but which is in the heart and reveals itself by the way the believer lives his life. One can be sure that worshipping our Lord, not with fear, but based on love, a kind of love, that is love with our heart and soul and mind will be sincere, and only that quality of worship will be without any signs of hypocrisy.
We can see some hints concerning the Goal to be for the people as well as the path to be followed in The Old Testament as too,
(O.T. Deuteronomy) 4-28 There you will look for the LORD Your God, and if you search for him with all your heart, you will find him.
(O.T. Psalms) 37-23 The LORD guides a man in the way he should go …
(O.T. Jeremiah) 18-13,15 The LORD says, “…
Yet my people have forgotten me; they burn incense to idols. They have stumbled in the way they should go; they no longer follow the old ways; they walk on unmarked paths.
Similarly The Qur’an also mentions the path for the believers,
(Qur’an) 42-52 Thus We have inspired you, O Muhammad, a spirit from Our command. You did not know what either the Book, or Faith were, but We have set it (this Qur’an) up as a Light by means of which We guide any of Our servants whom We wish. You are guiding men toward a Straight Road, the Road to God
It is clearly stated in that verse that the Holy Message puts light on our path and that Muhammad was guiding mankind to the straight path. Certainly, we have to remember that all the messengers of the All Mighty, guided the human race on to the straight path. We have to understand that traveling on a straight path simply reduces the unnecessary waste of time and effort. One has to remember what Jesus said ‘The blind cannot lead the blind.’ For that reason one has to be aware of the qualities of the people who are supposed to lead them to their Lord. If they are also blind, then what needs to be done? A short answer to that question is, that it may be advisable that the believers should read the book which they follow with the intention of understanding the holy message, and apparently such an idea is stressed in The Qur’an,
(Qur’an) 6-116 If you obeyed most of those who are on earth, they would lead you astray from God's path; they only follow conjecture and are merely talking nonsense.
This verse although it appeals to Muhammad, the issue underlined in that verse should draw the attention of the whole human race. Human beings, to walk on the path which may lead them to the preordained goal, do not need to pay unnecessary attention to communal belief, which in most cases is nothing but man made religion, which has been impressed on the minds of human beings right from childhood by the society, and more so by the members of the clerical structure. Instead of following those man made rules, the believers must strive to hold on the Holy Book which they prefer to follow. Within this frame work of thoughts, we may need to remember the following verse to strengthen it,
(Qur’an) 73-19 This Book (Qur’an) is an admonition and directs man in reasoning. Therefore anyone who wishes adopt a path to his Lord.
This verse gives a clear indication that anyone can take a path to his Lord. We must remember that it is not only The Qur’an, but all the Holy Books are an admonition to the human beings and leads the people to their Lord. Something was rather interesting in the last verse which says that anyone with will, can take a path to his Lord. We will remember the term a path, but, not the path, again in this chapter later. What is also interesting in that verse that for a believer to take a path depends on the persons free choice; stressing again the fact that there is no force to be exerted on the people regarding personal belief, which is something between the individual and the Creator.
The idea that the Path which may lead people to their Lord is not one is also stressed in some other verses,
(Qur’an) 22-34 We have designated different religious ceremonies for each nation. …Your God is one God; so you must submit yourselves to Him only. O Muhammad give glad tidings to those humble people who act with humility.
22-67 Each nation have We ordained rituals they are devoted to, so do not let anyone argue with you about the matter.
For every nation We have ordained different religious ceremonies which they must follow; so let them not dispute with you on the matter, …
It is clear that the difference in the religious ceremonies of different communities do not change the fact that there is only One God, and the one to be fully submitted to. Total submission to our Lord seems to have been practiced by Abraham a long time ago, and The Qur’an recites how Abraham prayed to his Lord,
(Qur’an) 2-128 … and make our offspring into a nation which are also Muslim which submits to you. Show us our places to worship you. You are so Relenting, the Most Merciful!
The meaning of the word Muslim was explained in the previous chapters and it is again clearly stated in the verse above as total submission to God, and this word should not be taken as only the followers of The Qur’an, instead it should cover the followers of all the Holy Books with total submission to God. The Qur’an actually brings some further light on that issue,
(Qur’an) 5-43 How do they come to you to judge while they have the Torah which contains God’s judgement? …
(Qur’an) 5-47 Let the followers of the Gospel judge by what God has sent down in it;
The verses shown above again give a clear indication of the Unity in the teachings of religion. Everyone and every community should proceed their worship as stated in the book they follow with a sincere intention to find the path to lead them to their Lord. Contrary to the belief of some amongst the followers of The Qur’an, The Old Testament and The New Testament both include the valid messages given to the human race, and The Qur’an with its own words, basicly confirms the previous message given in those two books. A similar approach which gives value to the previous message, is also observed in The New Testament that when Jesus talked to a person who was cleared of his skin disease after Jesus had prayed for his disease to be cured.
(Matthew’s Gospel) 8-4 Then Jesus said to him, “Listen! Don’t tell anyone, but go straight to the priest and let him examine you; then in order to prove to everyone that you are cured, offer the sacrifice that Moses ordered.”
This verse is clear evidence of the fact that each of the Holy Books, and not just The Qur’an whose one of the duties was identified as the confirmation of the previous ones, was once again verified, and certainly that is again a strong confirmation of the continuity of the Holy message and also the sameness of the source of the message, is underlined.
The Qur’an while telling us that the Holy message was given to the human race through several books, it also shows us that the message was always the same and its integrity was maintained. The Qur’an advises the followers of each book to reflect the teaching given in the book which people follow in their daily life, but without causing any diversification. H owever, as mentioned in the previous chapters, due to the weakness of human nature, or due probably to the evil thoughts of some individuals, factions formed even among the followers of the same book. As we see in the following verses, this partitioning of the people , which in reality is going away from the oneness, will result in the formation of sects, and it is condemned severely by The Qur’an
(Qur’an) 42-14 They only separated after knowledge had come to them, because of envy towards one another. If word from your lord had not already gone ahead till a specific period, things would already have been determined among them. Those who inherited the Book after them feel a suspicious doubt concerning it (God’s Religion)
(Qur’an) 23-53 Yet they broken their religion into sects among themselves, each faction is happy with whatever have as their belief in their hands.
(Qur’an) 3-105 Do not be like those who were divided into factions after explanations had come to them; those will have awful torment!
(Qur’an) 6-159 O Muhammad, you have no concern with those who divide their religion and formed sects. …
These verses of The Qur’an while points out to the divisions amongst the followers of The Old Testament and the followers of The New Testament and The Qur’an do not accept the division of God’s Religion. Such a division is against the wishes of the Holy message of uniting the human race into one nation. What is incredible is that, while these verses clearly express the oneness of the message, the followers of The Qur’an, after Muhammad had passed away, were divided into sects and even dividing into tariqats (i.e sub sections) even in the same sects. The distress among the followers of The Qur’an is a clear indication that the path which they have been following for centuries must be different from the Straight Path advised to the believers in the Qur’an. What was the reason for that which made the followers of the Qur’an follow a path which brought them into a state of turmoil? Did the believers at an individual level play any role in determining the path to follow? Certainly not, since the majority of the believers were not able to read the Qur’an in Arabic, because in most cases their native language was different. The path the masses were required to follow, was dictated on the communities by the members of the clerical structure due to the misinterpretation of the Qur’an. Certainly, such a practice allowed the clerical structure to keep the truth of God’s Religion behind a curtain which then put down a pathway for the authorities, clerical or political, to control the masses. Will the individuals of our time continue to give permission to the malpractice of the teachings of religion, contrary to the requirements of the Holy Books? Only time will give the answer.
The adversive effect of the human factor on the teachings of religion is also stressed by Jesus in the following Gospel verses,
(Matthew’s Gospel) 23-8 “You must not be called ‘Teacher,’ because you are all brothers of one another and have only one ‘Teacher.’ ”
(Matthew’s Gospel) 23-13,14 “How terrible for you, teachers of the Law and Pharisees! You hypocrites! You lock the door to the Kingdom of Heaven in people’s faces, but you yourselves don’t go in, nor do you allow in those who are trying to enter!”
(Matthew’s gospel) 23-23,24 “How terrible for you, teachers of the Law and Pharisees! You hypocrites!...
Blind guides! You strain a fly out of your drink, but swallow a camel!”
Jesus clearly rejects the teachings of religion by the teachers of the Law of his time, and in general by the members of the clergy who have failed on the whole to lead the believers to walk on the right path which may lead them to their Lord. Instead they were involved in internal politics, and in later centuries in world politics, and they have mislead the believers simply because they themselves, as Jesus said, have been blind leaders. The words of Jesus indicate that the human race ‘hase only one teacher’ was repeated in the Qur’an and was expressed rather clearly in the following verses,
(Qur’an) 55-1,2,3,4 The Most Merciful
has taught mankind the Qur’an
created man
taught him self-expression
(Qur’an) 2-255 God! There is no deity except Him, the Living, the Eternal. …
while the human beings can embrace nothing of His knowledge except whatever He may wish. ...
(Qur’an) 2-282 O believers! Whenever you contract a debt for a fixed period, let a scribe write it down with justice. The scribe should not refuse to write it in the way God has taught him.
(Qur’an) 42-51 It is not fitting for God to speak to any human being except through inspiration or from behind a curtain, or by sending a messenger anything He wishes to inspire (mankind) with, through His permission. …
The verses presented above, which were taken from The New Testament and The Qur’an points out the difficulties of human beings guiding their fellow humans, while stressing the fact that knowledge can be received from the One and the Only Source. Then one can say that the goal shown to mankind to be our target in the Holy Books can be achieved only by walking on the right path. Choosing the right path may be possible only if the believer rejects man made religion and holds the Holy Message tightly. The Qur’an forbids the exertion of any force on people with relation to their faith. A believer must consult his heart but not his logic if he intends to find the right path. On the other hand, man made religion, with its long estabilished rules, has unfortunately kept the believers away from the path which could eventually lead them to the target shown in the Holy books. With regard to this, let us remember a verse from The Qur’an,
(Qur’an) 11-19 Those heartless ones who obstruct others from God's path and attempt to make it crooked, are also the disbelievers of the Hereafter.
The Qur’an names those, whatever their reason may be, who hinder believers from taking the right path as the heartless ones. Certainly, creating diversification amongst the believers of the Holy Books because of the wrong interpretation of the Holy Message, and putting it into practice in the teachings of religion to the masses, is another, and a very effective way of taking people from the right path. It is rather interesting to notice that The Qur’an, even in the seventh century when it was proclaimed to the human race, severely criticizes some of the members of the clergy,
(Qur’an) 2-79 It will be too bad for those who write the Book down with their own hand[writing], then say: "This is from God!", so that they may sell it for a little money. …
(Qur’an) 9-34 You who believe, many Jewish scholars and Christian monks do consume people's wealth to no good purpose and they obstruct God's path. Announce painful torment to those who hoard gold and silver and do not spend them for God's purpose.
(Qur’an) 12-104 You do not ask them for any payment for your proclamation of the Qur’an; it serves only as a Reminder which gives advice to all creation.
The examples of the wrong deeds of some members of the clergy mentioned in the above verses, could, and can also be seen everywhere in the world at any time. Perhaps, what needs to be done by the true believers, irrespective of the Holy Book they follow, is first of all, to desire the guidance of the Most Beneficient and then look diligently for the light in the Holy Books to illuminate their path.
Now we have to remind ourselvesof an important issue mentioned in the part called ‘Religion’ of this book with regard to the individualistic facet of the teachings of religion. Towards this end let us remember some verses from The Qur’an,
(Qur’an) 2-148 Everyone has a prayer direction in which they turn their face to pray; So compete in doing good deeds. ... Wherever you may be, God will bring you all together; God is Capable of everything
(Qur’an) 24-41 Have you not seen, O Muhammad, how everyone in Heaven and Earth glorifies God, even the birds? Each one knows its own prayer and how to glorify Him.
(Qur’an) 5-48 We have sent down to you the Book with the Truth, to confirm what was already there from the previous Book, and to safeguard it. Judge among them according to whatever God has sent down, …. We have determined a path and a method.for each of you …If God had wished, He might have made you all into one community, but He has not done so in order to test you with whatever He has given you. So compete rather in doing good deeds. All of you will return to God. He will notify you concerning anything you have been disagreeing about
(Qur’an) 6-108 Do not insult those they worship besides God; lest they insult God as an enemy without even realizing it. Thus we have made their action attractive to every nation; then their return is to their Lord and He will inform them all about their actions.
These last verses of The Qur’an plainly narrate that the path for every individual to proceed to the target was preordained, starting from the very beginning. In other words, never mind being the followers of different books, even between followers of the same book, the path which was preordained seems to be different. It is evident that probably for that reason The Qur’an forbids exertion of any kind of pressure on the believers related to their faith. On that basis, one wonders why pressure has been exerted, physically or and mentally, on individuals to put them within boundaries which have been determined by humans themselves? The teachings of religion as narrated in the Holy Books is there to free individuals from man made boundaries. To accomplish this aim of the Holy Message, every individual should be given the chance to act with his own free will, and by listening to the voice of his conscience try to find his own path; the one which was preordained for him. Let us listen to the voice of The Qur’an again,
(Qur’an) 39-55 Follow the finest part of whatever has been sent down to you from your Lord before torment comes upon you suddenly while you do not notice it
The Qur’an does not give any clues about, which is the best of that which was sent down to the human race. Therefore it is not easy to understand the missionary activities used to convert people in the past and even in present times. Conversion, means to most people, as the changing of one’s religion. In actual fact it is simply someone changing the Holy Book which he had followed previously. As all the Holy Books originated from the same source, how could there be different religions? This issue has been talked over and over in the previous chapters. Therefore it may be advisable for the individual to discover that which is best for himself, by listening to the voice of his heart, while believing and holding fast to the universality of the teachings of religion, that is Unity. Personal effort to that end is essential. But even for that end to be realized, God’s Will is needed, and this chapter will be closed with verses which stress this point.
Qur’an) 24-35 God is the Light of Heaven and Earth. Light upon light, God guides anyone He wishes to His light. God composes parables for mankind; God is Aware of everything!
(Qur’an) 6-111 Even if We were to send angels down to them and the dead were to speak to them, and We gathered everything before their eyes, they still would not believe unless God so
wishes; …
AWAKENING
While human beings exist and carryout their daily activities on earth they are alive, but only biologically, which probably is sufficient for them to sustain their life. However is this kind of existence sufficient for human beings to follow the path that will eventually allow them to reach the destiny shown to them in the Holy Books and perhaps rather clearly in The Qur’an. To walk on the path, which is assigned differently for every individual, as shown in the previous chapter, the person should be awake; otherwise one will fail to achieve the required goal. Is a human being, although biologically alive, really alive according to the message of the Holy Books? It may be interesting at this point to remember the conversation from the New Testament, which passed between Jesus and one of his followers,
(Matthew’s Gospel) 8-21,22 Another man, who was a disciple, said, “Sir, first let me go back and bury my father.”
“Follow me “ Jesus answered, “and let the dead bury their own dead.”
One wonders why Jesus used the term dead about the people who were to bury the dead father of one of his disciples? Those people were made of flesh and bone and they were biologically alive. Perhaps Jesus, in his words was pointing to a different state of being dead rather than being dead in biological terms. A similar approach is also referred to in The Qur’an. Let us remember some verses concerning the difficulties Muhammad faced when he was proclaiming the Holy Message,
(Qur’an) 27-80,81 You cannot make the dead hear, nor even the deaf hear the Appeal once they turn around to escape.
You cannot guide the blind out of their error; you can make only those who has submitted themselves to God to hear your appeal.
Muhammad was definitely not proclaiming the message to the corpses buried in the cemeteries. He was speaking to those who were biologically alive. According to these verses, some of the people could understand the message, while others could not. In the terms of The Qur’an some individuals could not hear the message even if they listened to it. The Qur’an actually gives some explanation in the following verse on why some can hear the message while others cannot,
(Qur’an) 35-22 The living and the dead are not alike. God lets anyone He wishes listen, while you cannot make those in their graves hear.
Are the verses from the New Testament (8-21,22) and from The Qur’an (35-22), trying to tell us that the human being is in a kind of a grave while being alive biologically? If that is the case then it may be wonderful if we try to come out of our graves. On the other hand the verse from The Qur’an ( Qur’an 35-22) states that only those who are given permission by God are actually able to hear the message. The same verse takes our attention on another feature, which is that neither all of the believers nor all of the disbelievers are the same. This issue is approached again by The Qur’an in a wider perspective in the following verse,
(Qur’an) 77-25 Have We not made the earth as a round up (assembly place ?)
For the living and the dead?
Surely, according to the previous verses, the dead mentioned in the last verse have no relation to the corpses in the graves. Remembering the verse (Qur’an 35-22) can anyone gives a rational explanation that the dead are not the same if we take the meaning of the dead literally, i.e. biologically dead bodies. Within the same context, let us look at the following verses,
(Qur’an) 39-42 God recalls the souls at the time of their death, and those who have not died during their sleep. He keeps those souls for which He has ordained death, and sends the rest for an appointed time. In that, are signs for people who think deeply.
(Qur’an) 32-11 SAY: "The Angel of Death who has been given charge of you will take your souls. Then you will all be returned to your Lord
Both verses tell us that the soul is the essential part of the human being and that the biologic body we have is probably like an instrument that we make use of when a human being is biologically alive on earth, or in more general terms, in the material universe. When the biologic death of the human body occurs, then the soul, which is the essential representative of humans appears to be taken to our Lord. Since our own selves, the soul, is the one which is in existence, the term dead mentioned in The New Testament and in The Qur’an does not seem to have any relationship to the corpses which are biologically dead after the souls have deserted them.
We have to remember that the teachings of religion appeals to the living beings, but not to the corpses in the graves. This is why Jesus said,
(N.T. Luke) 20-37,38 And Moses clearly proves that the dead are raised to life. In the passage about the burning bush, he speaks of the Lord as ‘the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’
He is the God of the living, not of the dead, for to him all are alive.
According to the verses referred to above both from The New Testament and The Qur’an the term dead seems to point to the humans who are biologically alive but have not reached the awareness yet to understand some of the truths about ourselves. This idea is actually summarized in the following verses,
(Qur’an) 7-179 We have created many sprites and humans for Hell: they have hearts they do not understand with, and eyes they do not see with, and ears they do not hear with. Those persons are like livestock: in fact, they are even further off the track, They are heedless!
(Luke’s Gospel) 14-35 “It is no good for the soil or for the manure pile; it is thrown away. Listen, then, if you have ears!”
Human beings live in a material universe and their body is also made up of the matter of that universe also we are provided with a brain to think and to analyze with and then to synthesize them. This is the picture that we know. On the other hand, The Qur’an tells us that we can understand things with our hearts. According to our existing knowledge the heart of the humans is an essential part of our biologic body. It’s function is to pump the blood through every cell in our body that without the blood circulating in the veins of the human body the person cannot survive. However The Qur’an seems to be quite clear that our understanding is through our heart. With that stress on the heart, one wonders, if The Qur’an is pointing out to the fact that the capacity of our brain is limited in grasping ideas which involve only the material universe, and we need some other capability to be developed in us, to grasp some other ideas beyond the material universe? Probably the following verse may give us some idea related to that issue,
(Qur’an) 39-22 Anyone whose breast, God has opened up to Islam, will receive light from his Lord. It will be awful for those whose hearts have been hardened against remembering God! Such people are in obvious error.
The last verse again does not mention the human brain, instead it is talking about the area, where the heart is situated, to be opened to Islam by God. It is apparent that the heart something metaphorical but does not mean the blood pumping heart. Certainly, here we have to remember the true meaning of Islam if we do not want to be mislead. As it was explained previously the term Islam, should be taken as an Arabic word meaning total submission to God. The verse above of the Qur’an, repeating the fact that for some one “to be in light from his Lord” is only possible by the permission of The Allmighty. The light mentioned in that verse, probably a gift of the All Mighty to the believers and probably can be perceived by the eye of the heart but not with the eyes in our head. That lıght I believe, will allow the gifted ones to proceed on the right path which eventually may lead them to their Lord.
It was stressed from the beginning of this book and it was repeated again and again that the Holy Message, which we can reach in written form in books with different names, was sent from the same source and proclaimed by the messengers with an aim to awaken the human beings. But which human beings? The answer to this question can be found in the following verse,
(Qur’an) 36-69,70 …We have not taught this messenger (Muhammad) any poetry nor would it be fitting for him. It is merely a Reminder and a clear Qur’an.
So that it (Qur’an) may warn the awakened ones and that the Sentence may be justified against those disbelievers.
The message of The Qur’an is directed to all the human race irrespective of the Holy Book they follow. If The Qur’an is telling us the truth, which is absolutely the case, then we can argue that for someone who is formally accepted as a Muslim is not a prerequisite that the person is awakened. It is rather clear that the term “dead” used so frequently in The Qur’an is used for the people who somehow have not been able to be awakened yet and therefore have not reached the necessary consciousness to regulate their way of life on earth. We must understand that all the teachings of religion provided for the human race is, to make them better behaved entities, so that life on earth will be peaceful. With regard to the improved consciousness of the people it is possible to see similarities in The New Testament too,
(Luke’s Gospel) 11-43,44 “How terrible for you Pharisees! You love the reserved seats in the synagogues and to be greeted with respect in the market places.
How terrible for you! You are like the unmarked graves which people walk on without knowing it.”
Now one may ask the following question: What happens to the ones who are biologically alive but are still in their graves, according to The New Testament and according to The Qur’an (Quran 35-22). Will they not be able to receive the Holy Message ( not in their ears but in their heart?) We find the answer in The Qur’an,
(Qur’an) 22-7 Surely the Hour is coming, there is no doubt about it. God will raise up those who are in their graves
The resurrection of the corpses from their graves is explained in The Qur’an with a parable in the following verse,
(Qur’an) 7-57 He is the One Who sends winds as glad tidings of His mercy, so that whenever they lift up heavy clouds, We drive them along to a dead countryside and send down water from them; and thus We bring forth every kind of fruit. Similarly We raise the dead too, so that you may bear this in mind to learn the necessary lesson.
Jesus also gives hope to spiritually dead people that they will be awakened from their sleep;
(N.T. John) 3-6,7 “A person is born physically of human parents, but he is born spiritually of the Spirit.
Do not be surprised because I tell you that you must all be born again.”
Let us remember some verses from the Old Testament and The Qur’an in relation to the creation of the human being,
(O.T. Creation) 2-7 Then the Lord God took some soil from the ground and formed a man out of it; He breathed life giving breath into his nostrils and the man began to live.
(Qur’an) 38-72 Once your Lord told the angels: I am about to create a human being out of clay. When I have completed shaping him and breathed into him from My Spirit, then you bend down to prostrate before him.
It may be possible to draw a parallel between the process of the first man to be brought to life after he was made from the soil of the earth and shaped, and the rebirth of the biologically alive humans by the help of the Spirit. When we shall all be born again? Only God knows it. Nevertheless, human beings should never lose hope of God’s compassion. As in everything else, the awakening of people is only possible with God’s permission, which is pointed out in The Qur’an,
(Qur’an) 53-49 Verily He is the Lord of Sirius(enlightenment).
Again it is necessary to stress that enlightenment of individuals is only possible by the will of the Lord of Enlightenment that we see further signs of it in The Qur’an,
(Qur’an) 6-36 Only those who listen whole heartedly will respond to the call. As for the dead (disbelievers), God will raise them, then to Him they will be returned.
(Qur’an) 2-28 How can you be ungrateful to God when you once were dead and He gave you life? Soon He will let you die once more, then bring you back to life again; finally unto Him will you return!
The verses given above are pointing out that the awakened ones will be returned to their Lord. In time to come, we may be allowed to have a better understanding of the phrase “Return to our Lord”. But the understanding of the word “awakening” is the opening of the eyes of the heart so that the individual may start to perceive some of the truth concerning himself and life in general. In other words as derwish Yunus said centuries ago, “ one may start to know oneself”. In the verse (Qur’an 2-28) repeated death and being brought to life again for the human beings is stated. Within this context we have to remember a verse which was mentioned before,
(Qur’an) 35-22 The living and the dead are not alike
It may be possible that the truth, which every awakened one reach may be different and this allows us to say that everyone’s truth is different. Therefore there is no “absolute truth” for the human beings. Probably we may be allowed to be aware of higher truths. This recalls to one the “reawakening” of the soul. Perhaps what is mentioned briefly in the Qur’an verse (2-28) is telling us that the individual may open his eyes to new truths continiously. One may see this in ones life, that reading the same verses of the Holy books previously, and now or in future may allow him to understand them differently. Is not this a result of reawakening?
The awakening of the humans has probably been continuous starting from the very beginning. Because the Holy Message is continious and the duty of God’s messengers is to proclaim the message to the people, and by doing so, awaken the members of the community to help them open their eyes to the new truth. One can find a clear example of that awakening in The Qur’an which appeals to some of the Israelites who were then living in Saudi Arabia, reminding them of a certain incident which occurred when Moses was alive,
(Qur’an 2-55,56 So you (Israelites) said: "O Moses, we will never believe in you until we see God openly," the Thunderbolt caught you while you were all looking on.
Then We raised you up after you had died so that you might be grateful;
It appears that the Israelites were awakened with the message given by Moses and probably they were awakened further by the other Israelite prophets whose messages were directed towards the same target. Recalling the verses of the New Testament given at the beginning of this chapter,(Matthews Gospel 8-21,22) it is clear that Jesus also proclaimed the Holy Message to awaken the Israelite community of his time, and we may recall some more verses from The New Testament on the same issue,
(John’s Gospel) 6-49,50,51 “Your ancestors ate manna in the desert, but they died.
But the bread that comes down from heaven is of such kind that whoever eats it will not die.
I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats this bread, he will live forever. The bread that I will give him is my flesh, which I give so that the world may live.”
What was Jesus trying to say to the Israelites in the verses above? Was he actually talking about his biologic body or something else. Muhammad was called the walking Qur’an; in the same way one may propose that Jesus himself was the teachings of religion in the form of flesh and blood. What does it mean eating the flesh of Jesus? I sincerely hope that in the present times the followers of Jesus who take communion every Sunday think about the above verses. It is apparent that Jesus tried to awaken firstly his own community, the Isralites, and then the whole human race. Unfortunately the same people who were supposed to be awakened by Jesus crucified him.
The teachings of Moses, Jesus and Muhammad were proclaimed firstly to their own community, but in general to the whole human race with an aim to awaken them. Perhaps the teachings awakened only a small percentage of the population. If the majority of the world population was awakened, the globe that we are living on, might have been a much better planet. One wonders if the members of the clergy played a determining role in everywhere keeping the masses in their sleepy state which is observed everywhere. The same state of the human race was observed and was put into words by Jesus about two thousand years ago,
(N.T. Luke’s gospel) 11-52 “How terrible for you teachers of the Law! You have kept the key that opens the door to the house of knowledge; you yourselves will not go in, and you stop those who are trying to go in.”
It is not only the knowledge within the boundaries of the positive sciences, but the divine knowledge without any boundaries, is also for the human beings to learn. According to the previous verse, the people who are supposed to be familiar with the divine knowledge have been mostly the members of the clergy and they also have the means to spread that knowledge to the public. The whirling dervishes amongst the followers of Mevlana Celaleddin (The well known Turkish mystic), when they are performing their ritual they open one hand to the sky while the other hand is turned to the ground. This is simply a symbolic expression that whatever, including the divine knowledge, is given to them, they share it with others. If we have to repeat again the fact that the teachings of religion is for man, then we can say that this fact is expressed in the rituals of the dervishes although symbolically. If one asks a question saying that; has this been the practice through the centuries? The answer to that question will not be affirmative and indeed that has probably been the case in the past and The Qur’an also is rather complainative on this matter.
(Qur’an) 3-187 When God made a covenant with those who were given the Book (Scriptures) saying: “You shall explain to mankind and not conceal it.” But contrary to the covenant they tossed it away behind their backs and sold it for a paltry price. How wretched was what they bought(instead).
The Qur’an was proclaimed in Arabic. The literal meaning of the word Kur’an is ‘recite’ and it has been recited in Arabic not only in countries where the native tongue is Arabic but also in countries where the native language was different than Arabic. Therefore, this practice kept the truth of the Holy Message given in the Qur’an away from the masses. The members of the clergy are the ones who have been responsible for that resultant turmoil at present times in most of those countries where majority of the people have been the followers of the Qur’an. Due to the fact that the masses learned the Holy message as it was presented to them through knowledge accumulated through centuries by scholars. However we must be aware of the fact that the knowledge past down through the centuries has bee based on the interpretation of the human beings. On the other hand, the conflicts in some of those countries, where Arabic is the native language, is probably partly due to the fact that the individuals do not read their book with reasoning, and partly again, due to the misinterpretation of the message by the members of the clergy. The reason for the turmoil in countries where the people follow The Qur’an actually is forseen in the verse above. Such a verse, and so many others make all the Holy Books so special that they do not have a date of expiry. Coming back to the present topic of the hindrance of the message from being conveyed to the public let us remember a verse,
(Qur’an) 8-55 The worst of the living beings at God’s Presence are those who conceal the truth; and they will not believe.
The Qur’an even questions the faith of those who conceal the truth knowingly or unknowingly. In fact, could any individual who is a true believer, hide the truth? Probably those who conceal the truth either have not understood the message given in the Holy Books or they have preferred to go against the message even if they have understood it. The statement of the Qur’an and of teachings of Jesus are quite clear about the issue,
(Qur’an) 44-38,39 We did not create Heaven and Earth and anything in between them just for our amusement. We have created them only to reveal the Truth, even though most of them do not realize it.
(N.T. Luke) 11-52 ”How terrible for you teachers of the Law! You have kept the key that opens the door to the house of the knowledge; you yourselves will not go in, and you stop those who are trying to go in.
Then we must express the desire that no one should form barriers of any kind to stop the human race from being aware of the truth and we must not allow anyone to build walls in front of us to keep the truth away from us. Because to stop human beings from knowing the truth is defiance of the aim of the creation. If the people who prevent the truth from being known by others, are the members of the clergy one thing we can say is that God help them and God help the human race. Fortunately, Almighty gives us the good news that in spite of all the hinderances arranged by certain human beings the human race will eventually be aware of the truth,
(N.T. Mark) 4-22,23 Whatever is hidden away will be brought out into the open, and whatever is covered up will be uncovered.
Listen, then, if you have ears.
(Qur’an) 22-7 The Hour is coming, there is no doubt about it. Certainly God will raise up whoever are in their graves.
The awareness of every individual is different. For that reason the hour that every individual will wake up will be different. We have to remember what was said in the Holy Books about the term ‘day’ and was also repeated in the previous chapters. The term day had no relation to the day that we measure with earth time and similarly the term ‘hour’ should not be taken literally as a time span that is measured with earth time. We do not know when that time will come but we know the means for it,
(Qur’an) 45-20 This Qur’an is made up of light rays which opens the eyes of ones heart.
This verse is a verse from The Qur’an, but it does not mean that only The Qur’an spreads light to open the eyes of the heart of the people; on the contrary some other verses of The Qur’an (e.g. Qur’an 5-44 and 5-46) clearly states that there is light in both The Old Testament and The New Testament. Therefore the individual, whichever book one follows, whenever the chance occurs must read his book and should try to understand the message within it with a sincere intention.
Opening of the eyes of the heart and being furnished with some extra power of the individual may be the signs of awakening, but even that stage probably is just the beginning on a long journey which may eventually lead the person to his Lord. At any stage of that journey the ego of the person may still interfere with the spiritual development of the person, probably we expect that interference to be lessened with increasing awareness. The interference of the personal ego with the spiritual development of the person may lead to some undesirable ends when the person has achieved some degree of awakening even at a beginning stage and received some power; This is documented openly in The Qur’an regarding a certain group of people known as The Ahkaf Community of the past in the following verse which appeals to the people of Mecca during the times of the proclamation of the Qur’an;
(Qur’an) 46-26 We had set them up with something We have not established you with, and granted them hearing, eyesight and vital organs; yet their hearing, eyesight and vital organs did not help them out at all to keep them safe from disasters. Because they were resisting our signs and what they had been making fun of engulfed them.
It is not easy to understand that for some awakened ones to behave like the blind and to go astray of the verses of God Almighty. The issue of ‘salvation’ is explained in a variety of ways in the Holy Books. Is it to abide in heaven or reaching the outmost goal shown to the mankind i.e.God’s Presence? The Qur’an mentions both of them and The Qur’an is rather clear about the issue that salvation is a term on an individualistic base but not a communal one. The followers of Jesus believe that Jesus sacrificed himself for the salvation of the human race. One wonders if there was no crucification would the teachings of Jesus be so world wide spread? We can not be sure about it. Believing in Jesus should be fulfilled by the life style of the individual. Otherwise the turmoil that we are going through in our times will not come to an end. Certainly the cause of the present problems, and if they are not overcome soon, the hell which human race will be living on earth is basicly due to the fact that the followers of The Old Testament, the Followers of The New Testament and the followers of The Qur’an failed in understanding the message proclaimed to them in those Holy Books. If the message was understood by the human race and if reflected on their daily life then mankind would have been living in heaven like earth. The past and the present generations failed in achieving this heavenly life. There is no need to lose our hope forever. There is a possibility that that hope stays with the coming generations and let us hope that they will do their best for the realization of the awakening hour which was promised in The Qur’an, to come as early as possible.
The human beings instinctively have been looking for a light to open their eyes to the truth. Perhaps only a few achieved that goal while the masses unfortunately kept on sleeping. This fact was noticed by Jesus nearly two thousand years ago and was put in words in the following verses while pointing to the retarding factor which did not allow people to open their eyes,
(Matthew’s Gospel) 15-14 “ Don’t worry about them! They are blind leaders of the blind; when one blind man leads another, both fall into a ditch.”
(Matthew’s Gospel) 23-15,16 ”How terrible for you, teachers of the Law and Pharisees! You hypocrites! You sail the seas and cross whole countries to win one convert; and when you succeed, you make him twice as deserving of going to hell as you yourselves are!
How terrible for you blind guides!...
Can anyone argue about the above verses? The sayings of Jesus have been applicable even in our times because human nature in general has not changed. Let us continue with the teachings of Jesus on the same subject,
(Matthew’s Gospel) 23-8 You must not be called ‘Teacher’, because you are all brothers of one another and have only one Teacher
(John’s Gospel) 6-45 The prophets wrote, ‘Everyone will be taught by God’. Anyone who hears the Father and learns from him comes to me.
Jesus stresses that there is only one teacher. In the last verse what Jesus is saying, is that only those ‘who hear the Father and learns from him’ goes to Jesus. This is nothing but only by the will of God can individuals go to the messenger to continue his training. and The Qur’an also gives great importance to the will of God (Qur’an 39-22;24-35;6-111). Going back to the fact that there is only one teacher that Jesus was talking about; the same issue seems to be expressed in the same way, in The Qur’an too, if we remember some verses already given in the previous chapters,
(Qur’an) 55-12,3,4 The Most Merciful
has taught mankind the Qur’an
created man
taught him self-expression
(Qur’an) 2-31 And He taught Adam all the names …
If there is only one teacher, how can we benefit from the teachings? We have the reference books which convey the Holy Message. Perhaps remembering some verses from The Qur’an again may be some help,
(Qur’an) 45-20 This Qur’an is made up of light rays which opens the eyes of ones heart.
(Qur’an) 5-44 Verily, We sent down theTorah, therein was guidance and light, by which the Prophets, who submitted themselves to God’s Will, judged the Jews…
(Qur’an) 5-46 And in their footsteps, We sent Jesus, son of Mary, confirming the Torah that had come before him, and We gave him the Gospel, in which was guidance and light and confirmation of the Torah which had come before, and an admonition for the pious ones.
All these verses give us a clear picture that each of the Holy Books has the guidance and the light. The preachers of different books, have been preaching the ideas which have been put into a doctrine, and at best, their own inspirations with regard to the teachings given in the Holy Books. Remembering the Qur’an verse (5-48) from the previous chapter, one can propose that every individual should be given the chance to choose the book or the books to follow with his free will and then must work to find the light in them. Anyone who manages to find the light; while walking to the target that he had determined, may be able to open his eyes always to a new truth and every time he reaches a new truth he will be awakened again and again.
Let us see what the great teacher Jesus had said about those who had taken some steps on the way of enlightenment,
(Luke’s Gospel) 11-33,34,36 “No one lights a lamp and then hides it or puts it under a bowl; instead, he puts it under a lamp stand, so that people may see the light as they come in.
Your eyes are like a lamp for the body. When your eyes are sound, your whole body is full of light; but when your eyes are no good, your whole body will be in darkness
If your whole body is full of light, with no part of it in darkness, it will be bright all over, as when a lamp shines on you with its brightness”
The eyes that Jesus mentioned in the last verses, I do not think are the biologic eyes of the human beings. Everyone has biologic eyes and everyone looks, but how many of them can see the truth? In the terms of the Holy Books, the ones who had the eyes of their heart opened may start to receive enlightenment. Again remembering the verses from the Holy Books with regard to enlightenment, it is an endless path such that perhaps we may use the term on-going enlightenment. Such a spiritual development, may bring the person to start putting light in front of the people so that they will not fall in a ditch, because the enlightened individuals are not the blind leaders any more. Putting light in front of the people is something metaphorical not something physical. It may be taken as a minute piece of the ‘Universal Wisdom’. Such enlightened ones may be able to lead the masses for their enlightenment. Certainly the ones who reached that level of enlightenment can be able to lead the people on the right path without acting ‘The Big Teacher’ as such behaviour was severely opposed by Jesus. Finding such leaders is not easy. It is only due to God’s Mercy which may occur ones in a while. Nevertheless the individuals have to work hard with good will to find his light on the path of enlightenment and allow others to benefit from it while keeping the following verses in mind,
(Qur’an) 6-165 ... And He has raised you in ranks, some above others that He may try you in that which He has bestowed on you. …
(Qur’an) 57-23… God does not love any of the conceited boasters.
The individual must be aware that everybody is the same in the presence of God Almighty irrespective of their riches wordly or heavenly, because everything that we receive is all by God’s will. Therefore, every individual should try hard to find the ways of enlightenment and has to strive to receive further enlightenment; since it is the only way for the awakening of the people. We have to remember that all the time we have been tried with what we have received and the only way to pass the tests is that we have to share it with other people in a suitable manner. The author strongly believes that sharing not only the worldly wealth but the heavenly wealth too is the only way to create a happy society.
REASONING
(Qur’an) 73-1,4 O you who are bundled up in garments (Prophet Muhammad). …
Recite the Qur’an in a slow, pleasant tone with reasoning.
This verse is a command to prophet Muhammad who was given The Qur’an to proclaim to the human race. Why was Muhammad required to read The Qur’an slowly and with reasoning? The answer to that question can be found in The Qur’an in a number of verses of which an example is presented below,
(Qur’an) 38-29 This Qur'ân which We have sent down to you is a Holy Book; full of blessings, that they may contemplate on its verses, and that men with purified hearts may receive council.
The Qur’an requires that the individuals are expected to receive admonition which may only be possible if people read The Qur’an with reasoning as it was required of the prophet Muhammad. The same verse is, in other words, stressing on the individuality of the faith as well as underlining that there is only one teacher. At the same time, The Qur’an is rather complainant due to the fact that people do not contemplate on the verses, in general, of the Holy Message,
(Qur’an) 47-24 Do they not then think deeply on the meaning of the verses of the Qur'ân, or are their hearts locked?
(Qur’an) 54-17 And We have indeed made the Qur'ân easy to understand and to receive council. Is there anyone who reasons?
The last verse, have been repeated three more times with the same wording in The Qur’an (54-22,32,40) emphasizing that in those days, when The Qur’an was proclaimed to the people, there was no one who was reading the Holy Message with reasoning. Although a long time has passed since Muhammad proclaimed the message to the human race can anyone say thatit is different in the present times? Anyone can answer this question by looking at the conditions in the countries where most of the population claim to be the followers of The Qur’an. It appears that followers of Moses were advised to reason too according to the following verse,
(Qur’an) 28-43 And indeed after We had destroyed the generations of old, We gave Moses the Scripture as an enlightenment for mankind, and a guidance and a mercy, that they might reason and receive council.
The Holy Message was proclaimed by God’ Messengers firstly to their own communities. Both The Old Testament and The New Testament were announced to the Israelites in the current language of the time, while The Qur’an was proclaimed in seventh century Arabic. This picture does not limit the message to those communities. The Qur’an especially stresses that the message given in those three books are essentially the same and universal, because the human race was created by the same Creator. What is more, is that the community which had the first opportunity to hear the message, in no way can be a select community. Otherwise, the justice of the creator will be questioned. The Qur’an clearly states that the Holy Message is given to the human race for them to receive council. Since the proclamation of the Holy Message in three books, the belief explained in them has been spread out throughout the world. The people in most countries do not understand the message in its original language because they mostly do not speak other than their mother tongue. This creates a dilemma; how can a believer take council, if the person cannot reason what he is reading because it is in a foreign language? What is more, is that a person can reason best in his mother tongue. Then, it is possible to say that for the believers to take admonition from the Holy Message as a first step, the message should be read in everyones own language. The Qur’an has been read in Arabic in all the countries where the native tongue is not Arabic. The Qur’an explains why the language of The Qur’an was in Arabic,
(Qur’an) 12-2 Verily, We have sent it down as an Arabic Qur'ân in order that you may reason.
(Qur’an) 41-44 And if We had sent this as a Qur'ân in a foreign language other than in Arabic, they would have said: "Why are not its Verses explained in detail in our language? Whether it is in Arabic or in a foreign language. Say; This Book is a guide and a healing for those who believe. As for those who disbelieve, there is deafness in their ears, and they are blind to the Qur'ân. …
(Qur’an) 42-7 And thus We have inspired unto you O Muhammad a Qur'ân in Arabic that you may warn the Mother of Towns (Mecca) and all around there. …
These verses, at first sight seem to appeal to the people around the Mecca region in Saudi Arabia. Does that hinder the Universality of The Qur’an? The answer is negative, according to so many verses of The Qur’an of which an example is given below,
81-27,28 This Qur’an is merely a Reminder to all the creation.
For those of you who wills to walk on a straight path.
It is not possible to imagine anyone on earth who can claim that Arabic is ‘the Universal language’. It would be the most absurd claim. In the countries where most of the people follow The Qur’an, read it in Arabic and recite the verses in Arabic during their daily prayers without understanding it. Such as this do not let the believer to receive admonition because they do not understand it. One of the Turkish scholars Ateş claims that at least a small number of the Qur’an verses are read differently by the residents of Mecca and residents of Kufe in the times when The Qur’an was proclaimed to the people. Then one wonders, besides a very small number of scholars, can the people read the verses of The Qur’an correctly with the meaning that was meant? Even if they learned to read it correctly, without understanding it, the requirement of The Qur’an, i.e. reading with reasoning, will not be fulfilled. Therefore The Qur’an should be recited in every believers own language. Actually this idea was put forward about two thousand years ago,
(N.T. 1-Corinthians) 14-10,11,19 There are many different languages in the world, yet none of them is without meaning.
But if I do not know the language being spoken, the person who uses it will be a foreigner to me and I will be a foreigner to him.
But in church worship I would rather speak five words that can be understood, in order to teach others, than speak thousands of words in strange tongues.
As it was previously mentioned that the distress apparent in the countries where people follow The Qur’an stems in essence stems from the fact that the individuals in those countries, learned the message not from the original source but from the words of the clergy. On the other hand, The Qur’an appeals to the conscience of the believer. Therefore, the individual must receive the message directly from the original source but not that which he was told. Such practice was also common in the Western world too for centuries. But with the Reformation people in some Western countries have been able to read the Holy Message and to worship in their mother tongue. A similar practice in countries where people follow The Qur’an, although their mother tongue is not Arabic, might be a big step towards the realization of the aim of the Holy message, i.e. creating heaven on earth due to the spiritual development of the individuals. Within this issue it may be worth to mention that the so called “Heaven” based on material gains created by the Western world is something much different than what is meant with the word heaven above. It is clear that most of the individuals in the Western world, although they posses everything to make life easier for themselves, are not happy. Even though some of them go to Sunday services, do they really practice what was advised to them to do in the Gospels? Do they turn a blind eye on the facts of life, and leave what they recite during their worship back in the church? They are in the best position to answer these questions.
If we come back to the understanding of the Holy Message proclaimed in the Holy Books, let us remember some verses from the Qur’an,
(Qur’an) 13-19 … But it is only the people whose heart and minds work will take advise.
Qur’an) 39-9 …Say Is someone who knows whatever has been sent down to you from your Lord is the Truth, like someone who is blind? It is only men of understanding who will reason take lessons from God’s verses.
(Qur’an) 3-118…God has made His verses plain to you provided you will use your reason.
The Qur’an at the same time gives us some clues how reasoning will be accomplished,
(Qur’an) 22-46 Haven’t they traveled around the earth and don’t they have hearts to reason with and don’t they have ears to hear with? Verily it is not the eyesight which is blind, but their hearts.
According to this last verse, even though a person may have a biologically healthy body it does not seem to be enough for the person to understand when he has eyes to look because the verse states that seeing is only possible with the eyes of the heart. Only then, the person may start reasoning, and this may allow the person to take council. On the other hand, The Qur’an states that an individual can hear only with God’s will,
(Qur’an) 8-23 If God had known about any good in them, He would have made them hear; …
The Qur’an rates highly the individuals who reason,
(Qur’an) 3-191 The believers whose hearts and minds work are the ones who always remember God while standing, sitting or lying on their sides and think deeply about the creation of the heavens and the earth and say: “Our Lord, you have not created all this without a purpose! Glory be to you! Protect us from the torment of the fire.
(Qur’an) 3-7 It is He Who has sent down to you the Book in which some verses form the foundation of the Book; while others may be interpreted in different ways. …The interpretation of those can be given by God and also by those who were given the profound knowledge. …Noone besides people with working heart and mind can reason signs properly. …
These last verses while breaking some of the idols of man made religion (such as remembering The Creator when lying down) stresses that only those who have wisdom and reason can understand the intrinsic meaning that is the uncovered meaning of the verses of the Holy Message. How may this type of understanding be possible? The New Testament and The Qur’an explains it,
(N.T. John’s Gospel) 6-45 The prophets wrote, ‘Everyone will be taught by God.’
(Qur’an) 42-51 It is not fitting for God to speak to any human being except through inspiration or from behind a curtain or by sending a messenger anything He wishes to inspire mankind with through His permission. …
(Qur’an) 77-1 Verily they are sent one after another(angels, winds, messengers, parts of the Whole that is inspired).
Let Us all hope that we shall have the privilege of being taught by God. At the same time it may be interesting to remember the rest of the verse 6-45 and others from John’s Gospel, where Jesus continues as follow;
(N.T. John’s Gospel) 6-45“…Anyone who hears the Father and learns from him comes to me.
(N.T. John’s Gospel) 6-47,48,49,50,51 “ I am telling you the truth: he who believes has eternal life
I am the bread of life.
Your ancestors ate manna in the desert, but they died.
But the bread that comes down from heaven is of such kind that whoever eats it will not die.
I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats this bread, he will live forever…
What did Jesus mean when he spoke about offering his flesh as a living bread to human race? How can anyone who lives to day eat the flesh of Jesus? Would it be that he was talking actually about digesting his teachings? Probably so. As a matter of fact, he was talking about awakening the people by offering them the teaching he brought to earth. What is said here will be more meaningful if one remembers the verses of the New Testament presented in the chapter ‘Awakening’ which I believe is the beginning of having eternal life. The Qur’an adds a mechanism called “reasoning” to the whole process to be completed. On the other hand The Qur’an, while encouraging the people for having a deeper insight of the Universal Knowledge, it takes our attention on the limitations of the human beings,
(Qur’an) 46-23 …"Knowledge rests only with God. …
(Qur’an) 64-18 He is the All-Knower of the Unseen and the Visible, …
(Qur’an) 17-85 … you have been given only a scrap of knowledge."
It appears that, the human race, although it had managed in the past, and will manage in the future to take great steps in science and technology and accumulate a so called vast amount of knowledge, with
regard to the limited human mentality, we have been allowed to receive only a minute amount of the knowledge. The power of God’s will on the amount of knowledge human race is allowed to receive, as is the case with everything else, is stressed in the following verses too,
(Qur’an) 2-255 … mankind embrace nothing of His knowledge except whatever He may wish.
(Qur’an) 81-29 Yet you will only wish whatever God, Lord of the Universe, may wish.
The limitations imposed on human beings, under no circumstances should prevent the individual from endeavoring to understand the Holy Message with a good will. Both the New Testament and The Qur’an tells us that the doors of knowledge will be opened to those who wish and strive for it,
(Qur’an) 40-60 …Your Lord has said:”Pray to Me; I shall respond to you. …
(N.T. Luke’s Gospel) 11-9 And so I say to you: Ask, and you will receive; seek, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you.
All the verses presented in this chapter emphasizes the necessity of reasoning by giving deep thought to the verses of the Holy message if the believer intends to understand the message. It is necessary to stress the fact that reasoning is a process accomplished by the individual. It has no communal nor an institutional connections. All these verses appeals to the individual for the message of God’s Religion to be received by the people. Otherwise the institutions formed by the human beings will direct the individual, as has been the case in the past, which unavoidably will introduce the human thoughts into the teaching. This has been the case in the past and it will continue to be so if human beings do not understand that each of them are individuals and they are at the centre of the teachings of religion.
A SPIRITUAL JOURNEY
According to the Holy Books, the children of Adam, who were ascertained to have lived on earth for a predetermined time, were also shown a destiny. It was stressed again and again in the previous chapters, that the Path to lead people to their destiny pertains to the individual. The message conveyed to the human race by the means of God’s Messengers, and presented in the Holy Books are, metaphorically speaking, light bulbs which illuminate our path. To proceed on that path, spiritual progress is essential, which is underlined in a number of verses of The Qur’an, of which an example is given below,
(Qur’an) 43-13,14 … remember your Lord's favor and say: "Glory be to Him …
And indeed, to our Lord we shall return after going though different stages.”
It was narrated in a number of verses of The Qur’an that finally we shall be returned to our Almighty Creator. It is apparent that to reach that destiny, a human being has to ‘pass through different stages’. What is meant by this ‘passing through different stages’ ? Perhaps one may be able to see some clues from the verses of the Holy Message presented in the Holy Books,
(Qur’an) 76-2 Verily, We have created man from a drop of semen. We transform him from one state into another. Finally we made him hearer and seer.
Some may be inclined to interpret this last verse in terms of first the formation of the embryo, and the following stages through which the embryo must go and be shaped, only then the birth follows. However, the first sentence in that verse says that creation is already completed and the biologic formation is finished, furthermore, we know that every baby born may not necessarily have the faculties of hearing and seeing. We may remember from the previous chapters of this book that The Qur’an ( e.g. verse 22-46) talks about ‘ the eyes of the heart being non operational’ while the eyes of the head, although being functional, the person cannot see, even if he can look. The message given in the verses above concerning the return of human beings to their Creator, is repeated in the following verses too,
(Qur’an) 84-6 O man!,Indeed you will work very hard on the path to your Lord; but you will eventually succeed your goal.
(Qur’an) 84-19 You shall certainly travel from one dimension into another..
These verses seem to tell us that the spiritual development of the individual is a ‘must’ and it is preordained by God Allmighty On the other hand, to reach the destiny for the human being is presented as a reward, which may be put into words as ‘reunion’. It also appears that finally mankind has to travel from one dimension into another. This should not be taken as changing only a single dimension, because only God knows it all and one can only find clues about concerning this from the verses of the Holy Books. With regard to the word ‘dimension’, one may find some hints in the following verse,
(Qur’an) 70-1,3,4 A questioner asked concerning a torment about to befall
It comes from God, .The Lord of the dimensions of ascension.
The angels and the Holy Spirit ascend to Him in a day, whose range is fifty thousand years with your time.
It seems that on the path which leads man to his Creator, there are stages that the human has to pass through, and those stages are called as the ‘dimensions of ascension’ in The Qur’an. It is also interesting to notice that it takes fifty thousand years with the time measure of the earth for ‘the angels and the Holy Spirit to ascend to Him’. Then, it brings a question to our minds saying how would this spiritual journey for the humans be completed in a life time on earth? Since The Qur’an is a book of truth, in time we may be able to find the answer.
It is now clear that spiritual development is necessary for the human kind to reach the preordained destiny. Even if we are not aware of our limitations, The Creator knows it and provides us with unlimited help because God is Compassionate,
(Qur’an) 6-83 …We raise anyone We wish to in rank. …
(Qur’an)12-76 .. We raise anyone We wish to in rank, while Someone Aware stands over everyone possessing knowledge.
(Qur’an) 40-15 God, Owner of the ranks, He is the one who raises the ranks. Possessor of the Throne, He sends the Spirit who is one of His slaves, to anyone He may wish, to warn mankind about the day of meeting.
(Qur’an) 35-22 The living and the dead are not alike. God allows anyone whom He wishes, to hear, while you can not make those in their graves hear.
The spiritual progress of a believer seems to be possible only by ‘God’s Will’. Another interesting point is that none of the disbelievers nor the believers are the same with regard to each of their spiritual progress. We remember from previous chapters that according to The Qur’an, the rituals described to different communities were different as well even within the same community, the path of each believer was planned to be different. Such differences probably result in the differences in the ranks of the spiritual development of the individuals, this fact is expressed in general terms in the following verses,
(Qur’an) 56-7,8,9,10 And you all will be in three separate groups.
So those are the happy ones, who are they?
And those, the losers, who are they?
And those foremost in the race of righteous deeds.
(Qur’an) 35-32 Then We gave the Book (the Qur'ân) as inheritance to those of Our slaves whom We chose. Then of them are some who wrong their ownselves, and some of them of them follow a middle course, and while some of them of them are, by God’s permission, foremost in good deeds. …
It was expressed in the previous chapters that The Qur’an confirms the previous writings and it advises the human race to keep the unity in faith. Unfortunately, the picture that we see is different today, and has been different for centuries. The human being has been in a process of diversification from the unity. This is also the case among the followers of The Qur’an which gives us an interesting picture of the believers even when Muhammad was still alive,
(Qur’an) 48-29 Muhammad is God’s Messenger. Those who are with him are strict with disbelievers and
Merciful among themselves. You see them bowing down, prostrating and seeking the bounty of God and pleasure of God. Their sign which shows on their faces is from their prostration during their prayers. Such is their description in the Torah. But their description in the Gospel is like a field of wheat which puts its shoots out, so it swells up until it grows thick enough to stand straight on its own stem in the way the farmers admire. …
Even if we do not know the limits of the spiritual progress of the believers, the verse given above shows us how beautifully, a believer who is spiritually progressed, can embrace the Whole. It was pointed out earlier that the ranks of the believer should be different because each person, according to The Qur’an, has a different path and this fact was expressed in general terms above; however the following verse gives us a very clear idea concerning the individual character of the faith and therefore the ranks of the believer,
(Qur’an) 11-3 Seek forgiveness from your Lord; then turn towards Him in repentance. So that He may grant you a handsome allotment for a specific period, and bestow His bounty to everyone of different ranks. …
In this last verse there is no mention of the communal nor institutional character of the teachings of religion. It is directly addressed to the individual and furthermore there are no clues with regard to the ranks of the members of the clergy, who, on the other hand have ranks in the man made clerical structure. If every individual has a different rank then each person will have a different reward. To receive the reward one has to walk on his path. The Qur’an tell us that the believers will be allowed to be able to walk on their path,
(Qur’an) 29-69 … whoever strives for us we shall guide them along Our ways. God stands by those who act kindly!
For an individual to think ‘good’ and to do ‘good’ are the essential steps to be guided to the path which will lead everyone to their destiny. The Qur’an frequently stresses that the believers should work for the establishment of peace on earth on any scale. The difference in the ranks of the believers should not create an issue of envy among them, instead, with the words of The Qur’an, the believers should strive in ‘doing good deeds’. Even the Prophet Muhammad received his share with regard to the differences in the ranks of the believers,
(Qur’an) 17-79 At night, wake up to recite the Qur’an as an additional prayer for yourself. So that your Lord may raise you to that glorified dimension.
Even the Prophet Muhammad, who proclaimed The Qur’an to mankind is advised to recite The Qur’an so that he may be allowed to be raised to the ‘glorified dimension’ which is only possible by the spiritual progress of a person. Then what is left to the believers is to bow in front of the Holy Order and try to do what is required of us. Probably the first step is to read the Holy books in order to understand it and then to reflect it to our daily life. In this way each persons understanding of the message may differ but it will guide each one to their individual path which is the path to let them to proceed spiritually. Certainly, every believer will have to read any one of the Holy Books which the person chooses with his free conscience. Because each book provides the necessary guidance to its followers,
(Qur’an) 45-20 This Qur’an is made up of light rays which open the eyes of ones heart.
(Qur’an) 28-43 We gave Moses the Book after We had wiped out the earliest generations to serve as insights for mankind, and for guidance and mercy so they might reason and receive council.
(Qur’an) 5-46 And in their footsteps, We sent Jesus, son of Mary, confirming the Torah that had come before him, and We gave him the Gospel, in which was guidance and light and confirmation of the Torah which had come before, and an admonition for the pious ones.
For the human beings to be guided on the path of the ‘Spiritual Progress’ is certainly due to God’s mercy, but to proceed on the path is only possible, as mentioned in some of the verses ( Qur’an 91-9, 35-18) which were also recited in the previous chapters, by the spiritual purification of the person. Spiritual progress probably allows the believer to open his eyes to new truths which may be expressed in terms of awakening continuously. Certainly one might guess that for the spiritual progress to continue for the believer the spiritual gains have to be reflected on the persons daily life and those people in time may even be able to control their thoughts. With regard to this it may be necessary to remember what Jesus said,
(N.T Matthews Gospel) 5-28 “ ..anyone who looks at a woman and wants to posses her is guilty of committing adultery with her in his heart.”
The reflections of the spiritual progress of the believer on ones daily life might be looked upon as a way of trials of the people. A continuous change in the behaviour of the believer is expected, which even extends to Prophet Muhammad,
(Qur’an) 17-37 Do not walk with arrogance around the earth; you can never tunnel through the earth nor rival the mountains in height.
(Qur’an) 15-88 Do not stare with ambition at what We have bestowed on some of the disbelievers nor grieve over them. And lower your wings for the believers.
How interesting are the messages that The Qur’an conveyed to the human race centuries ago, and which can be applied to the present times, too. Is it not possible, in some of the so called Muslim countries, to witness some who walk with arrogance due to political and or financial, so called, power, which they received from their own people? Therefore one cannot stop asking if faith had gone in their heart yet (Qur’an 49-14)?
The Qur’an reminds us concerning the gifts given to those believers who might have succeeded in progressing spiritually,
(Qur’an) 27-15 Indeed We gave David and Solomon knowledge, and they both said: "Praise be to God, Who has made us superior over many of His believing servants."
(Qur’an) 27-16 Solomon was heir to David and he said. “O mankind, we have been taught of the language of the birds, and been given a little of everything.” That is clear evidence of the grace of God.
God’s knowledge, I do not believe, can be expressed in any quantities, even with infinity. We are now aware that some individuals are given a little, which is a gift of The All-knowing. The Qur’an informs us that those gifted ones may also be provided with some supernatural powers too,
(Qur’an) 27-40 Someone who had some knowledge about the Book said; 'I shall bring you it in the twinkling of an eye!" When Solomon saw the throne set before him, he said: "This is some of my Lord's bounty, so He may test me whether I am thankful or thankless
The throne mentioned here, according to The Qur’an (27-40), belonged to the queen of Sheba. If The Qur’an is telling us the truth, there is no doubt about it, then we can say that the human race has lost a lot of the old knowledge, it will not be wrong to say that the losses have been in the spiritual arena.
The Holy message conveyed to mankind through the messengers was for the education of the children of Adam during their life span on earth. Any education is also furnished with instruments to measure the success of the pupil. The most widely known method is the tests and this fact is shown in The Qur’an,
(Qur’an) 29-2 Do people reckon that they will be left alone only because they say: “We believe,” and they
Will not be tested?
The Qur’an also gives some clues concerning the method of the tests that human beings will be facing,
(Qur’an) 29-3 …We have tested the ones who preceded them with discord. God certainly knows the ones who are truthful and He will recognize liars.
(Qur’an)21-35 Every soul shall taste death. We will test you with evil as well as with good and to Us you will all be returned
An individual living on earth has a biological body which is appears to be suitable for the physical conditions on this planet. The conception of earth by a human looks like to be a world of duality and the logic of the person seems to be sufficient to differentiate the components of that duality. Presumably, the logic of a person is somehow tied to ones living instincts. Within this chain of thoughts, anything that fulfils the desire of the person is good, while anything which causes any kind of displeasure for that person is bad. The life span of human beings on earth is rather short to learn everything by trial and error. Nevertheless, with the accumulation of knowledge of the past generations, we learned to saw the seed first before we could harvest anything. In this way human race became aware of the virtues of patience. In spite of this, human beings still are impatient. They tend to forget that sometimes what seems to be bad in the short term may give very satisfying results. What is important is the ‘end result’. The end result for some may be a material gain, while it may be a non-material gain for some others. If we could look at the world from above, see people in their billions, trying to survive on earth, the temporary residence. On the other hand, we may notice that everyone is trying hard, consciously or unconsciously, to attain their preordained destiny of which some clues can be found in the Holy Books. Anything that a person faces, whether good or bad according to earthly measures, must be considered good if whatever happened helps the spiritual development of that person. One needs wisdom rather than logic for one to look at things from above. Logic seems to be insufficient for an individual to pass the tests that we may face every day. One has to remember that the tests we failed to pass will be put in front of us time and time again. Within this framework, one must be aware of the boomerang effect; whatever we send out will come back to us and probably with a higher intensity.
The Qur’an gives us some other clues concerning the test methods that we may face,
(Qur’an) 25-20 We have made you all as a trial instrument for the others. …
This verse actually is a confirmation of that which every human faces in their daily life; in the family, at work, on the street in fact just about every moment of one’s life. When we are talking to people, if we try to take care in choosing the words that we use in times of dispute, it may help to settle arguments and also keep one away from being involved in further troubles. Also, it may trigger the establishment of heaven on earth , as promised to human race in the Holy Books. Within this framework of thought, and what was said in the previous verse, it may be necessary to remember a prominent verse from the teachings of Jesus,
(N.T. Matthews Gospel) 5-39 “But now I tell you: do not take revenge on someone who wrongs you. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, let him slap your left cheek too.”
What Jesus requires of humans is almost impossible if we contain our minds within our earthly bodies. This extreme example may be a clue for the believers to inherit, if one requires to proceed on the spiritual path. Similarly during a quarrel between two people if one prefers not to answer the other person that may at least annihilate the chance of getting the argument out of control. One can be sure that the one who prefers not to act abruptly will be the one who gains. Within this frame work, we need to remember another verse from the teachings of Jesus,
(N.T.Matthews Gospel) 5-5 “Happy are those who are humble; they will receive what God has promised.”
We can continue to look at the test methods mentioned in The Qur’an while keeping in mind the ‘ boomerang effect’.
(Qur’an) 6-165 He is the One Who has made you successors on earth and raised some of you higher than others in rank so He may test you by means of what He has given you. …
It is quite clear that the believers, who with God’s will, succeeded in walking on the path of spiritual progress and were given ranks of varying degrees, are also the subject of further trials for them to proceed on their path. The Qur’an shows us the way to be successful in our trials,
(Qur’an) 91-9 Indeed he succeeds who purifies his ownself
Our ‘ego’, quite possibly, will be on our path of spiritual progress every now and then without giving us any prior notice. Therefore, asking for help to enable us to pass the tests which we may face, seems to be a reasonable way, since we are also aware of the fact that everything is possible with God’s will. At the same time, we find some other verses in The Qur’an, with regard to our tests we face on our path,
(Qur’an) 64-15 Your wealth and your children are simply instruments of testing you. Yet with God there is a great reward.
(Qur’an) 3-186 You will certainly be tested by means of your wealth and through your own selves,
The human being, perhaps guided by the instinct of power is inclined to accumulate wealth and to further increase it, sometimes using every possible way whether legal or illegal. The Qur’an while warning us that we will be tried with our wealth, also shows us the easy way to pass the test,
(Qur’an) 8-2,3 Believers are merely those whose hearts feel wary whenever God is mentioned and whose faith increases when His verses are recited to them. On their Lord do they rely
Those who keep up prayer and share in plenty of whatever We have provided them with.
(Qur’an) 64-16 Heed God within your limitations; listen and obey and spend in charity, which is better for your ownselves. Those who resist to their own greed will be the successful ones
(Qur’an) 16-71 God has favored some of you over others in providing a livelihood. Why do those who have been favored are not going to hand over their provision to their servants, so they become equal partners in it. Would they thus disclaim God's favor?
(Qur’an) 3-133,134 Hasten towards forgiveness from your Lord, and a garden broader than Heaven and Earth which has been prepared for those pious ones.
The pious ones spend for charity in prosperity as well as in poverty …
The Qur’an advises the human beings to share, not just in prosperity but in times of shortage too. This verse hoping to be a reminder to those who would like to accumulate wealth, at the same time show off in their observing of the rituals. It was stressed in the previous chapters, of the necessity of the individuals to choose the book one wants to follow with his free conscience and to try to understand the message by oneself. As the path of every believer is different and because the consciousness level of every one is different, every individual will understand the message differently; and the understanding of the message will be different for the same person as time passes by. This is again related to the progress of the believer on his spiritual path and it should be considered as a natural outcome of advancement on ones path. It is the authors personal opinion, that sharing ones wealth with the ones who do not have, is more valuable than the rituals, especially those in the man made religion and even those advised to the believers in the Holy Books. This final sentence may be meaningful if one remembers the saying of Jesus that, ’Sabbath is for man.’
ISLAM AND PEACE
It was explained in the afore-going chapters, that the valid religion in God’s Presence was God’s Religion which in the Arabic language was named ‘Islam’. It should also be remembered that this word ‘Islam’ means ‘total submission to God’. In the past, throughout the world the word Islam was used to identify the followers of Muhammad. However, in these times the word ‘Islam’ has to come to be used in conjunction with the word Terrorism in the Western World. It is impossible to believe that some people put the sincere followers of the Qur’an on the same level as those who call themselves Muslims but are in effect terrorists. If we accept those so called ‘Islamists’, then we must remind ourselves of the similarity of the chaos and pain caused by the Crusaders in the Middle East, even in the Christian inhabited Eastern Rome which is known as Istanbul today. Furthermore, the Western World, the organizers of the Crusaders, also went through struggles due to the formation of different sects believing in different interpretations of the teachings of Jesus. In our times a minority within the followers of Muhammad are involved in acts of terrorism. Is it possible for any believer, a true believer, whichever the book the person may be following, to be involved in any activity which harms other human beings? As mentioned before, in the foregoing chapters, that the three Holy Books, The Old Testament, The New Testament and The Qur’an give the same message, probably differing in some details but maintaining the oneness of the teaching, while always confirming the previous book. It was repeatedly said that all those three books invited the human race to God’s Religion; but throughout the past, we notice that the followers of the teachings of Jesus insisted on establishing, according to them, a new religion. Such a development was definitely a division of the whole teaching although Jesus did not deny the teachings given in the scriptures and gave the good news about the next messenger to come. The obstinacy of the western world on this issue still continues creating ‘others’ in the present times. What is the outcome of such stubborn behavıour of the Western World and who has been benefiting from this? The Western World should answer these questions. Nevertheless the misrepresentation of the Holy Message by the Western World cannot and will not change the ‘Universality’ of the teaching. Due to the continuity of the teaching of religion the issue of peace, in this chapter, will be dealt with from the view point of those three books. Let us start with some verses of The Qur’an,
(Qur’an) 35-10 … towards Him do wholesome words ascend while peaceful deeds exalt those words. Those who plot evil deeds will have severe punishment …
(Qur’an) 13-29 Those who believe and work for peace, there are glad tidings and a happy future for them.
(Qur’an) 10-9 Their Lord guides those, who believe and perform righteous deeds for peace, through their faith. …
In The Qur’an one can find more than one hundred verses which encourage the believers to work for peace and of these only few were recited above, and in most of those verses ‘to believe and to work for peace’ expressed together in the given order. Is it possible that the followers of this Qur’an called Muslims would accept to be the instrument of terrorism to bring grief amongst the people. Who can argue that those who are involved, in terrorism or take part in military operations to hurt people are the ‘true believers’? The Qur’an shows us when a war can be staged,
(Qur’an) 22-39 Permission to fight back is given to those because they have been wronged-since God is able to support them.
(Qur’an) 5-33 The penalty for those who wage war on God and His messenger, and spread havoc through the land, is to be slaughtered ...
The Qur’an permits war to be opened to those who opened war first, or to those who cause mischief and disorder on earth. As a matter of fact, even to day according to law, national or international, causing disorder on land is a reason for punishment. It was repeated in the preceding chapters that the human being is at the center of everything, including the teachings of religion and the human life is valued in the Holy Books which forbid killing, with the exception of protecting other lives. One of the articles of the ‘Ten Commandments’ given in The Old Testament says “Do Not Kill”. Some of the verses of The Qur’an clear this issue further,
(Qur’an) 5-32 On account of that, We prescribed with the Children of Israel that anyone who kills any person without another soul being involved or causing mischief in the land, acts as if he had killed all mankind. Anyone who spares life acts as if he had granted life to all mankind. …
(Qur’an) 17-33 Do not kill any soul whom God has forbidden you to, except through due process of law. We have given his nearest relatives authority for anyone who is killed unjustly-yet let him not overdo things in killing the culprit, because he was given support by the law
Both The Old Testament and The Qur’an advise capital punishment for killing someone but without exceeding the limits. The Old Testament prescribes places of refuge (Deuteronomy 19-1…7) for some who are involved in killing someone accidentally, while The Qur’an, contrary to the present practice of punishment in some of the countries where most of the population follow The Qur’an, advises a different attitude,
(Qur’an) 16-126 If you are going to retaliate, then do your punishing to the same extent as you have been punished. Yet if you forgive and do not retaliate, it is better for you.
Is this Qur’an which directs its followers to kill other human beings and create sorrow? Instead The Qur’an advises the believers ‘to forgive’. With regard to forgiving, we have to remember the verses from the teachings of Jesus,
(Matthews Gospel) 5-39 “But now I tell you: do not take revenge on someone who wrongs you, if anyone slaps you on the right cheek, let him slap your left cheek too.”
(Matthews Gospel) 5-44 “ But now I tell you: love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may become the sons of your Father in heaven…
Is it not the time that the followers of Jesus who call themselves ‘we are Christians’ to look at the teachings of Jesus and their actions on an individual and national basis? Can anyone find any ties between the ideas put forward in the two Gospel verses above and the saying ‘you are either with us or against us’? In other words for someone saying that he is Muslim or someone saying he is Christian are simply labels made by humans themselves. Anyone whether follower of the teachings of Jesus, or the follower of The Qur’an, the belief should be reflected on the way the person lives; because deeds are essential rather than empty words. The Qur’an further advises its followers in the following manner,
(Qur’an) 41-34 A good deed and an evil deed are not alike: repel evil with the finest deed, and then notice how someone who is separated from you because of enmity will become a bosom friend!
(Qur’an) 5-45 … In the Torah We prescribed for them a life for a life, an eye for an eye, a nose for a nose, an ear for an ear, a tooth for a tooth, and wounds should have a similar compensation. But if anyone refrains from retaliation he will find that it serves him as an atonement. …
.
(Qur’an) 5-2 …Do not let ill will towards any folk incriminate you, just because they blocked your way to the hollowed Mosque (Kabba), so that you act aggressive; cooperate with one another for righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate with one another for the purpose of aggression. And fear God; …
The Qur’an clearly advises its followers not to retaliate to any hostility, but to respond it with goodness and encourage forgiveness of evil deeds. Certainly, the words of The Qur’an and the deeds of its followers, in general appear to be different. Is it this disobedience to The Qur’an by its followers the reason of the upheaval that we observe among them? Certainly, when one talks about obedience to the verses of The Qur’an, one should consider the whole of the message and to place man at the center of the message. Otherwise nations will fall into the spiral of the details of man made religion. Here again reasoning, as advised by The Qur’an, is God’s gift an instrument which will rescue oneself from the spiral.
As it was pointed out in the verses above, that The Qur’an forms the following order in saying ‘to believe and doing deeds of righteousness’; in other words, righteousness comes after having faith. One has to remember that having faith means, faith going into the heart (Qur’an 49-14). The true believers are named as the ‘Party of Allah’ in The Qur’an it is also stated that God is pleased with them (Qur’an 58-22).
(Qur’an) 58-22 … God has engraveed faith on their hearts, and assist them with a spirit from Himself, and will show them into gardens through which rivers flow, to live there for ever. God will approve of them while they will be pleased with Him. Those are the God’s Party and those will be the successful ones.
Is it possible that anyone who, God is pleased with, can kill any human being? Probably not. The Qur’an also warns those who provoke wars and hostility on land,
(Qur’an) 2-208 You who believe, enter all together into peace! Do not follow Satan's footsteps; he is an open enemy of yours.
According to The Qur’an, creating disorder on earth and not to be involved in peaceful activities is identical with following the footsteps of the Satan. Can such people be members of the party of Allah? It was stressed in the part about ‘RELIGION’ that the teachings of religion brings freedom to the individual, However in conveying the teachings of religion by human beings to others should also include freedom and this point is underlined by The Qur’an, which unfortunately in the present is considered to be a source of the terrorism on earth,
(Qur’an) 2-256 There should be no compulsion in religion, no force exerted on people. Anything right and good definitely is different than wrong behaviour.
The acts of individuals, as well as the communities in the countries where the people mostly follow The Qur’an, are not harmonious with the message of the last verse, instead quite often we hear pressure being exerted on the people to force them to live the religion as the dominant group understands it. Does this behaviour gives us any clues that those people have understood the message of The Qur’an? Actually the same Qur’an makes it clear that the duty of Muhammad was only to proclaim the message to people. For that reason, one wonders if those who try to exert pressure with regard to the practices of religion, see themselves above Muhammad and above the source which sent the message? Certainly we can remember the atrocities of some of the followers of the teachings of Jesus in the past. The human race is now in the twenty first century, and man made religion seems to be used, covered or uncovered, as an element of pressure on people in different countries of the globe. To establish peace on earth is of prime importance and was included in the message conveyed to people by different books. If there is no peace of mind and if there is no peace on land, such an environment is not suitable for the spiritual progress of the people. The individual is always kept at the center of the teachings of religion and for this teaching to be successful, establishment of peace is essential. The Qur’an, for that very reason encourages the followers of different books to achieve peace on land,
(Qur’an) 2-62 Those who believe and those who are Jews, Christians and Sabeans, in fact anyone who believes in God and the Last Day, and do as righteous good deeds to establish peace will receive their earnings from their Lord: no fear will lie upon them nor need they feel saddened.
The Qur’an in the last verse stressing the significance of the foundation of peace on land by the believers, embraces them all irrespective of the book they follow and by doing so The Qur’an proves its harmony with the Unity of the teaching, which in other words can be expressed as God’s Religion, and The Qur’an also gives us clues concerning its Universality.
The Holy Books also point out to the fact that the faithful ones who work for peace will be rewarded in their life time too:
(O.T. Psalms) 10,11 Soon the wicked will disappear; you may look for them, but you won’t find them;
But the humble will posses the land and enjoy the prosperity and peace.
(Matthews Gospel) 5-5 Happy are those who are humble; they will receive what God has promised.
(Qur’an) 21-105 We have written in the Psalms following the Torah; "My peace loving (peace making) servants shall inherit the earth
This is a divine promise to the human race and The Qur’an gives us the Good News that the divine promise will be accomplished,
(Qur’an) 39-74 They will say: ” Praise be to God Who has fulfilled His Promise to us and has made us inherit the earth. We shall settle down anywhere we wish in Paradise; how excellent was the reward of the pious ones.”
Indeed, a world where only the peace loving humans will be dwelling, no more war-mongers and no-one exploiting the others, will be paradise. By looking at the past of the human race as old as the written history allows us, it is noticeable that there has been some progress in human behaviour with regard to relations with other humans and in general the environment we live in. Therefore, we have reasons to be hopeful that in future the world will be a place where happy people will be living. It is also hoped that the individuals, as well as the states, which encourage and sometime actively take part in creating violence on earth will lose their force.against the most powerful weapon, ‘PEACE’. The Realization of this dream will only be possible by the vigour of peaceful activities by the peace loving people, without being instruments of some centers of power on earth.
